The Tribune of the Plebs stood: "Gentlemen, Over the course of the last two weeks, rumors and news have flooded the streets as they always do. Though the ones I speak of are concerning the Thracian tribes and their alliances with the Taurican Kingdom. Those Roman traitors have left behind the most sacred ideals we have, Our Republic! And they have gone on to create a pretend kingdom using all of the products of our successes. Recent news of their rise in Thracia and Dacia have been troubling though we have been in no position to do anything about it. However, with the war winding down and the new rebellion of the Thracian tribes against this kingdom, it's high time for their name and actions over the past several years to be spoken in these halls. What are the opinoins of my conscript fathers? Does anyone here hold more information on this topic?" |

Gaius Marius stood to speak, "Fellow Senators! The Tauricans rise in power has been nothing short of dramatic, they have taken themselves from the very edge of Taurica to have influence over tribes that border our very own provinces. This is not something that I would consider as an end to their ambitions..." Marius paused for a moment "...we must consider how we can counter this growth, it is my firm belief that Thrace is he key to this particular lock and I would urge my colleagues to consider bold action to ensure we have the upper hand." |

Galerius stood shaking his head "And what bold action would you have us make? Shall we raise legions and march off to war? Shall we lunch a new fleet and combat there fledgling navy? Maybe I havent made this clear to this point, the republic has NO coin. So we can speak bold words and for the moment that is all we can do" |

Galerius began to sit but stopped "Heres an idea how about we send a delagation to talk with them and offer our services against there tribes in return for gold and trade. Dispite my reputation on the battle field id rather make money with someone then kill them." |

Praetorian Galerius Valerius stood leaning on a stick to help support his ageing frame, "Negotiate!" He said aghast, "Why negotiate with traitors and deserters, when Roma needed men most they abandoned us, the very suggestion of negotiation is an insult to all those that have gone before us." The elder statesmen in the room nodded their agreement, as Galerius Valerius pale faced with anger continued, "Taurica!" He said with a vehement sneer, "Is nothing more than a sheep in wolfs clothing that needs to be taught a harsh lesson in power!" |

Galerius shook his head "I will not argue with the wise words of such a man as Galerius Valerius. He has served the republic faithfully since I was but a boy. But I merely point out that we just finished negotiating with the rebels, who might I add caused far more damage to Rome then Taurica. Conscript fathers I know it may be hard to envision normal relations with Taurica, But we can not be blinded by past insults and grudges, we must look at the larger issues. As I have echoed in these halls for days now we have no money yet we still have rebels and untamed provinces to deal with. i know my words may make some of you question my resolve but let me be VERY clear. i hold no love for Taurica and believe they are a threat. The question is how do we deal with that threat. |

"Gentlemen, Roma is not bankrupt at the moment. And this gives us options in the mean time. I fervently believe a direct border with Taurica will certainly lead to a constant need for forces to man a threatened border, if not a prolonged state of war. Therefore a buffer state seems the best and most stable solution." |

Herius Valerius stood to speak, smiling to his cousin Galerius and he inclined his head as a sign that he may not necessarily agree with his own thoughts. "Gentlemen! Gentlemen!" He said raising his hands, "Nothing excites a Curia more than the thought of having to deal with those rebellious thugs over on the other side of that depraved barbaric world, but both our Tribunus Plebis and Praetor Urbanus raise arguements that should not be ignored and should be given the right amount consideration." Herius said smiling to both men. "Let us be clear Taurica is no longer a nation that can be ignored or thought as weak, their ruler is experienced in military matters and he has sound advice from those around him, Basielos Titus I would be a tough enemy should we make him one." Herius paused, "I believe a delegation should be sent to the Tauricans, but in doing so we recognise Taurica as a legitimate ruler of lands which they certainly are not." "Our best option is to use the Thracians to keep them busy or at least use them as a buffer, but to do so will not be cheap," Herius sighed. "So gentlemen the options as I see it are that we negotiate and accept money and terms from Taurica, we support the Thracian rebels and ensure they are victorious or we use what has fallen neatly into our laps!" Herius grinned, "We use Amadocus to unite the Thracians against the Tauricans, with Roman support he could bring about a change in Taurican fortunes." |

Galerius chuckled "Has anyone even spoken to Amadocus? He's been strolling around for weeks now like a lost puppy. I say him pass by this honored hall six times yesterday." Galerius stopped as some laughter broke out. "Senators, Herius makes an excellent point though. Action must be taken but we must take the correct action. And for that i believe that Amadocus should he spoken to to see what value he holds. If we send him back and to Thracia with our support and he loses then we are looking at another war that we ill prepared for. Negotiations cost us nothing in men or money. So to that end I would ask our fair consul to form a delegation to atleast hear what Amadocus is capable of if he were to return home with our support." |

Herius Valerius stood to speak, after receiving a message. "Gentlemen, I bear with me a message from Macedonia which I believe this August body should bear witness to." Herius read the message. "Conscript Fathers, Upon my arrival in the province of Macedonia, I met with the Praetor to discuss the state of affairs on our frontier. Macedonia, as many of you well know, is in poor condition. Financial shortfalls are not just relegated to Roma; indeed, they are quite prevalent in the provinces as well. Macedonia cannot afford to adequately defend the border against raids or incursions from Thracian tribes, and the Taurican campaign into Thracia has caused an influx of refugees from the North. The Tauricans have marched into tribal lands, forcing thousands of refugees into Bessioi lands that border our provinces. I live under no illusions that the office of Praetor Peregrinus is an appropriate one from which to conduct diplomatic efforts. However, I am one of Roma's elected officials that currently resides in close proximity to the Taurican campaign. As such, I am formally requesting that the Senate enable me with the temporary authority to negotiate with the Regnum Taurica. I shall not speak with any finality, and the result of any formal negotiations will be dispatched to Roma with all appropriate haste. However, I must request that we engage in some form of negotiations whilst we can still avoid an influx of refugees that the province simply cannot accommodate. I fully realize that Roma cannot afford to launch further military efforts when we are tied down with multiple rebellions - and as such, perhaps we can find some diplomatic avenue with Taurica. Signed and sealed; Tiberius Valerius, Praetor Peregrinus" Herius Valerius looked round the Curia attempting to gauge the senates mood. |
