Proposal: Grain Subsidy Author: Marcus Livius and Proculus Hirtius Sponsor: Marcus Livius Background: A bloody and fierce civil war has just ended and during the civil war the grain supply was disrupted on several occasions. To help support poorer Romans during this time it is therefore desirable to extend the grain dole so it supplies grain to more people. However the Republic does not have the funds to the extend the grain dole directly. Therefore the grain dole will become a grain subsidy, 25% more grain will be bought for poor landless citizens and this will be paid for by charging 25% of cost price for the grain. "I would like to thank the praetor for working so diligently on this issue before leaving to finish off the rebels in Sicilia. It has my full support. We should put it up for vote as soon as possible." |
