Consul Claudius addressed the Senate: "Gentlemen, I have considered long and hard, as well as consulting the good senior men in our curia," he gestured behind him towards the center of the hall, where those men with curule chairs were allowed to sit, "and we have arrived at the conclusion that the state cannot handle the strain of so many legions. Therefore, with the support of our Pontifex Maximus, Censor, and Flamen Dialis I am decreeing that the following legions are disbanded and sent to their respective homes: Legio I Celtica Legio I Flavia Firma Legio III Pontica Rapax Legio IIII Pontica Marina Gemini Legio VI Pontica Gemini This is not just a matter of practicality, but also one of honor. These men were promised by our great savior Censor Syricus that they could return to their homes, and he has stressed to me that Roman virtue, the same virtue he was elected to uphold, requires that they be given what they were promised. It is also the opinion of these fine men that I have this power as consul, given my command over the military. That is all I have to say on the matter." |
