Months after the battle of Seleucia Piera, a letter arrives from Consul Gaius Licinius- Senators, I write to you today to inform you on the situation in Syria. By now you have probably heard plenty of things about the recent battle in Seleucia Piera, the primary port city which supplies Antioch. I want to quell any rumors, but also make sure you fully understand what is going on. A major battle was fought there, with both sides taking on tremendous losses. Unfortunately, when I decided earlier in the year that the two additional legions (I and II) could be used protecting Hispania and Septimiana, I sadly underestimated the strength of the rebels here in Syria. The reality is that the enemy has somehow managed to raise a force slightly greater than what I have brought with me, which includes a vastly superior cavalry. I am still unsure as to how the enemy has managed to pay for these forces as maintaining the legion itself would utilize the majority of their funds, never mind the additional phalanx and cavalry they have raised. This begs the question as to whether they have received funds elsewhere, from a neighboring nation perhaps. Speculation aside, as it is currently, I have enough men to maintain my presence in Syria, but not enough to finish the job. I have a defensive position in Seleucia Piera, and if the enemy attempts to assault me, I should be able to repel them as they will not be able to use their cavalry. I have been told that I should still be able to receive supplies from merchants, at a greater cost, but I can supply myself through the winter. For me to finish the job, I need at least one more legion, and perhaps some auxilia to supplement my cavalry and light infantry. The enemy will in all likelihood somehow reinforce themselves as well, although through what method I do not know. It is my suggestion that we have Legio VIII in Asia Minor march to Syria immediately, while building auxilia there over the winter. Any additional un used forces we have such as potentially Auxilia Graeciana can be sent there to replace the legion until we can afford to raise another force to protect it. I would suggest that Tiberius Valerius be put in charge of such a task as he is the Praetor Peregrinus and no one is currently leading Asia Minor. Senators, I take full responsibility for this predicament. The men under my command fought well, namely Legatus Curtius Antonius and Quaestor Lucius Flavius have proven themselves capable commanders once again, but the enemy is unfortunately stronger than we once thought. Should I receive Consul Claudius's blessing, I will enact these orders immediately. Signed, Consul Gaius Licinius |

Galerius stood "conscript fathers I am at a loss for words at this news. But I might some light on where they have received there funding. During my investigation into the missing gold the slaves that attended to Macedonicus admitted to me they had over heard talk of the gold being shipped east to parties unknown. From what I understand it was to be shipped to Capua then to the port and east. Now my men have reported that the magistrates in Capua deny receiving the gold. That means there either lieing and have it or it made its away unto ships and to the east. Now my report could have no connection to the influx of coin in Syria or it could be the cause of it. At this time I do not know but rest assured I have already sent word to Capua and will get to the bottom of it. In the mean time I suggest the consul lead all available legions to Syria." |

"Senators we must act with haste. I believe that the Consul has made his wishes clear, and so I have sent a letter to Praetor Valerius approving the provisional plan he sent me. Praetor Valerius is granted imperium over Legio VIII for the purpose of assisting our consul, and may use whatever means he judges best." The Consul spoke. |
