OOC: Please consider this to have arrived no later than Septembris 73BC. IC: A messenger arrives from Corsica with the following transcript. "To the Great Conscript Fathers of the Senate Praetor Gaius Septimius sends greetings from Corsica. We are victorious. The Senate shall have an accounting of all matters to date on this island. The natives are by fact betrayed by the Hirtian rebels and left with no support. It is the most telling judgement of their lack of honor. Our army found not one man who said 'I stand for Macedonius'. In fact, although there was resistance, our losses were more akin to a rough night in Ostian taverns. The army morale is strong and will use it upon Sardinia soon enough if the Senate will support my continuance of this war. I must request two auxilia forces, at least one cavalry, to accompany my operational plans for Sardinia. Also, I must ask for the naval support to insure safe passage to that island. If the Consuls would approve this from existing forces, I shall be better prepared to fight in Sardinia. If the Senate judges it must raise new troops, I shall accept that appreciation of the priorities of the Conscript Fathers. In detail, my reports on tax collection accompany my requests for a military outpost on the northern end of Corsica to put the Senate well in the minds of those remote natives and a road from Aleria to that new outpost that the Praetor's reach might carry Roman law there as well. I ask the Senate to support these costs. Also of political findings, I am informed by the locals that the Hirtians have made no fortification improvements, not one trained soldier and given no ships in support of the island. All that is known is the name of a man in Sicily, but not his face. These people have no loyalty to the rebellion, but take great pride in their own autonomy. Thus I ask the Senate for leniency and mercy upon those who honorably fought but with no regard for the Hirtians. Many did not resist our return to the island and should be spared greater punitive measures. Nine thousand were taken as slaves and some amounts for the army coffers. Taxes are being organized for collection. The natives have no strong leadership and I desire to make Rome their protector and lawgiver. Praetor Gaius Septimius" |

Amulius Marius stood to speak, "Noble Senators, I believe acceding to the request of additional Auxilliary forces is a move we should make swiftly, I ask the presiding Consul for his favour in allowing these forces to be raised pist haste and sent to Corsica so that Praetor Septimius can finish the task in hand." |

Tiberius Valerius rose, "Consul, I see no merit in sending additional forces to an island whose population is less than one-fourth of Sicilia. Praetor Marcus Livius has not yet requisitioned more forces for what is, quite candidly, a more important campaign... Praetor Septimianis has said himself that he has suffered hardly any casualties, and while I understand the importance of being cautious, I simply see no outstanding reason to send these men. Praetor Livius is facing a much more challenging force, to send additional units to Sardinia seems a touch frivolous... I might add that the island of Sardinia is largely mountainous terrain, hardly fit for a cavalry auxilia to be effective. Should the Consul deem that Praetor Septimianus need additional forces, I would advise that we limit it to one infantry auxilia. It makes very little sense to commit forces to a landing in Sardinia when the term is rapidly approaching it's end. Unless the Senate grants Praetor Septimianus a Prorogatio, or by some miracle the island of Sardinia capitulates instantly, an invasion seems like pure frivolity."

"Senators, I tend to agree that we do not need to send much-needed men to Sardinia et Corsica," the Consul declared, effectively ending debate on the matter. |
