Propraetor Aemilius, the province of Sardinia et Corsica is reserved for Praetors who are elected by the Comitia Centuriata every two years - just as the positions of Praetor Urbanus, Praetor Siciliae, and Praetor Peregrinus. If we are to extend Gaius Septimius's imperium, I suggest it be done in the form of a Prorogatio, subject to termination upon a successful military campaign or his entering the city. Having said that, I am not particularly impressed with the Praetor's campaign this far. It has taken him nearly two years to secure an island that, by his own words, offered hardly any resistance and whose population barely even knew who the Hirtians were. I would imagine that the Praetor would need twenty years if there was an enemy to resist him... Edited by Tiberius Valerius, Sep 10 2014, 08:26 AM.

I understand the province is traditionally a Praetor only position however the islands aren't under Roman control. Surely we could elect a new Praetor to take over the campaign however like you mentioned previously the importance maintaining the current command. I move to appoint Praetor Septimius a level of Imperium over islands as well as a position which succeeded that of a Praetor. Many of us know little about the situations to our south however, Praetor Septimius has been more transparent about his campaign then I have heard from Praetor Livius. I don't recall Praetor Septimius leaving for Sardinia et Corsica before running back to Rome.. an act which could have cost Praetor Livius his Praetorship. |

Galerius Rose from his seat “I find this lack of….faith in our commanders in the field troubling. Changing commanders mid campaign is a horrible idea. The men have come to know and rely on the judgement of their commander, replacing him now could shake their moral and I need to remind you Praetor Valerius that rome can still ill afford a defeat. Praetor Gaius Septimius has worked to secure the islands not to mention sent much needed slaves back to rome that aided in improving rome's economy. He has done much for the war effort and should be allowed to continue his work.” |

Tiberius smiled, "I am supremely confident in Praetor Septimius's ability to win, as he put it, 'Ostian tavern brawls.' His ability to bring about a timely conclusion to an apparently simple campaign, however, I am more skeptical about. If a sitting magistrate of the Republic questioning the granting of extraordinary imperium to a man who has done nothing extraordinarily impressive to warrant it disturbs you, Praetor, then by all means continue to be disturbed. We can afford a defeat no more than we can afford having our forces tied up in a campaign that, by the Praetor's OWN RECOGNITION, has offered little resistance..." "If Praetor Septimius had begun a campaign in Sardinia, as I believe should have happened this term, I would defer to the continuity of command argument. But such is not the case... I shall, of course, defer to the supreme wisdom and sacred authority of this body, the Consules and elected magistrates. But I submit that I have little confidence in the current command in retaking the province of Sardinia et Corsica at this time. I welcome events that would make take back these words, but I shall not apologize for voicing my view on the matter," Tiberius finished and retook his seat. |
