Consul Claudius, fellow Senatores, As many of you have heard, Aegyptus is in a state of civil war... It would appear that Stratonike is not particularly fond of Roma or our treaty with the Court of Ptolemy. I would suggest that we open up discussion on how to handle this situation before us. At the very least, I believe we must look to the East to settle problems which are plaguing Roman trade. Cilician Pirates operating near Asia must be halted before more damage can be done to merchant vessels, and the time to confront that problem may be rapidly approaching... I fear, Conscript Fathers, that we will need to seriously reconsider our treaty with Aegyptus, especially if the tide of war turns in Stratonike's favor. There is no promise that previous treaty obligations would be kept, and the province of Syria seems as though they would be glad to throw off Roman rule... We must make efforts to secure our holdings in the East in case Stratonike should prove victorious, and seek to consolidate power over the remaining Seleucid states... I encourage an open discussion on this matter, and I hope that we can seriously reconsider our stance in regard to the East and our treaty obligations... |

I must concur! I believe, as do many of you that the Mediterranean is destined by the gods to be a Roman lake. If no action is taken by Rome i'm afraid those to our east will view Rome as weak.. and vulnerable. The latest actions taken in the east by Rome have exerted to a level our dominance! However, we must take it further this civil unrest in Aegyptus gives us the opportunity to also exert our influence over the region. After all Aegyptus was more than willing to play both sides during our civil unrest! |

Our most pressing risk is the vital Egyptian grain supply that we presently rely on to sustain the city... With Sicilian grain out of our grasp, we are limited in our ability to react fully... I fear that a victory by Stratonike would not bode well for our grain storehouses. |
