The Way of Peace; Zhang Jiao's Rally

In a small village in the central plains, a large group of peasants surrounded Zhang Jiao who stood in the center atop a small hill. He spoke loudly and clearly with a serious tone. His long yellow robes blew with the wind which seemed to grow stronger the longer he spoke. He seemed very committed to his words.

"Hear me people of the land! The Han has unfairly stolen your food and money for the last time! How many times have we paid for their extravagance?! How much must we suffer so that they may enjoy the fruits of our labor?! We toil day after day in the fields and they look down their noses at us as they get fat on the food we harvested! Food that rightfully belongs to us! Worse yet, the Mandate of Heaven is no longer with the Han! Floods have swept away entire villages and famines that starve others out! I say ENOUGH! Rise up and join the Yellow Turbans in our rightful rebellion!"

With that said he drew his sword and pointed it at the Heavens; A massive lightning bolt streaked across the sky in broad daylight. It would seem as if Zhang Jiao had the Mandate of Heaven.

what happens when light becomes darkness...

The young recluse going by the name of "Tian Xia" had settled himself among the crowd to see what kind of man this Zhang Jiao of the Yellow Scarves was. A preacher of peace, yet a mongerer of war and distributor of arms to the common man. An amusingly hypocritical tinge surrounded the popular reputation that surrounded him, but often those that joined in arms with him cared not for figurative conventions such as image and reputation, seeking instead an outlet for their desire to kill.

It was truly an odd predicament from Zhang Jiao's position; a preacher of peace at the head of a military battalion of bloodthirsty anti-Han war mongerers. In any case, this Tian Xia wished to see for himself what was going on.

His face bearing an expression of subtle amusement and his eyes relaxed yet almost harrowingly piercing, Tian Xia clapped amongst the cheering of the simple-minded commoners gathered.

Perhaps he would go and have a word with the Yellow Turban leader himself after his speech had finished.

Zhang Jiao lifted his head and closed his eyes as if basking in the light of heaven, his sword still raised above his head. The applause was nice, but it made him feel cheap. He was no entertainer and these were no parlor tricks. The leader of the yellow turbans calmed himself and the wind died down as if in sync with him. He lowered his head and opened his eyes to see the crowd looking at him with many different emotions in their eyes. He saw hope, trust, passion, and....

'What....who is that?', Jiao saw red hair amongst the crowd. That was not common among the people of the land and Jiao stared at the boy with curiosity in his dark eyes. Perhaps Heaven had sent it's messenger to him. Perhaps this was another test. Many people had heard that Jiao could heal diseases and cast spells; They often demanded he prove it. He was prepared.

"Is there any who pose a question? Any who need healing? Step forth and let your voice be heard!"

A subtle extrusion of jaded uncertainty escaping from the enigmatic leader of this Yellow Scarves uprising latched onto the young Sleeping Dragon's hauntingly perceptive gaze. There was direct eye contact between the leader and his most eye-catching observer before he called forth the questions from the people gathered.

Of course the gathering in it's vastness would scramble to get the attention of the miracle maker that spoke before them; the sick begging for health, the widows begging for their husbands and the orphans begging for their parents. The summon that the Yellow Scarves leader had rashly made had catalysed the triumph of chaos in what had been a little slice of rural peace.

Yet of course, "Tian Xia" at the center of the mayhem remained as indifferent as he had always been; his subtle expression of amusement still as subtle as ever. Crazed 'animals' ran and shoved at every corner to get the Yellow Turban leader's attention, and yet serene stillness was all that was seen from he who stood at the center.

He made eye contact once more with the Yellow Turban leader through the pandemonium, before turning to walk back into the village; setting himself down on a small wooden chair outside a hut; his gaze still as relaxed as ever.

The look that the redhead gave him before he turned to walk into the village was not lost on Jiao. The crowd of peasants quickly stormed the hill and pawed at his robes, begging for health, wealth, and many other things that would solve all their problems. All of a sudden, Zhang Jiao had no motivation to listen to his people and help them. The boy(or was it a woman?) with the red hair had intrigued him. Something called to him, told him to follow and find out who that person was. Now, Jiao was feeling trapped and began to gently push his way out of the crowd towards the village. He spoke of the coming change and told them to be strong as he waded through the people.

Finally, he broke away from the people and rounded the corner of a hut. He abruptly stopped as he stared at the redhead sitting in a wooden chair before him. He looked for the right words and yet even he did not know exactly why he had pursued this person.

"Hello there, I saw you at the rally. Why did you turn away from me? From the Way of Peace?", he spoke gently.

It seemed that the Yellow Turban leader had found his way through the crowd and made a subtle exit. The abrupt exit of the miracle maker from the scene only intensified the magnitude of the chaos at the scene as shouts and murmurs alike gradually increased in volume. Where the young Sleeping Dragon sat was only barely of a distance providing a clear view of the scattering village populace on the hill.

"Tian Xia" himself from his seated position slowly directed his gaze to the leader that had disappeared from the chaotic scene and now come before him. His ever-serene aura enveloped the encounter as there occurred a brief period of silence before the Dragon spoke with a voice as pellucid as it was quiescent.

"You delivered a very inspiring speech, dear lord Zhang. The lightning from heaven was an especially moving gesture. I turned not away from you; how could anyone? Simply look behind you at the people who seek the guidance of your Way of Peace and you will see how beloved you are."

Composedly indicating a wooden chair to his side, the Sleeping Dragon's serenely subtle smirk grew a small fraction wider.

"Please, take a seat if you like. Though I ponder, why did you come to me?"

The leader of the yellow turbans took a glance back at the writhing crowd of people after Tian Xia had finished. He adored the peasants even though they had swarmed him like a bunch of mindless animals. They were merely what the world had shaped them into and the Han's legacy could be clearly seen to a keen eye.

Zhang Jiao took a seat in the wooden chair next to the redhead and ran a hand through his long dark locks before looking into those alluring eyes with a warm smile. Tian Xia's voice had a soothing effect, as if he was pure and the chaos had not touched him. It gave Jiao hope that he could cure the land and it's people.

"I came to you because you called to me. Out of all the people who came to my rally, your voice was the loudest. Perhaps I was curious; Who could witness such a display of power and remain unsurprised? Only one who has seen such power before. Tell me, why did you come to my rally today?"

The young Sleeping Dragon gazed across once again at the pandemonium that was the gathering at the hill; jaded eyes held in perceptive focus. The Way of Peace leader now projected a certain inherent joy through his voice and words. Inspiration. Motivation. Idealism.

Again with the same serene, translucid tone, the young Sleeping Dragon responded.

"Yes. I did call out to you didn't I?"

Tilting his head slightly backwards and shifting his gaze to make a harrowing, piercing meeting of the souls; the young Sleeping Dragon continued; his smirk having disappeared.

"As for why I came to you. Why I sought and called out to you."

And again the serene smirk appeared; as if it had never left.

"You can say... that I foresaw something."

Zhang Jiao nearly trembled at the words he heard and the look he was given. What had he foreseen? The victory or defeat of the yellow turbans perhaps? Such mysterious words from someone he had never even seen before; The redhead spoke with sagely wisdom despite his youth. It was a puzzle that the leader of the yellow turbans could not resist. Yet Jiao felt a sense of danger from him.

"You foresaw an event that involved me, no? Please, share your knowledge. I am sure there is something I could share with you as well, young one."

While he waited for a reply, Jiao boggled his mind trying to determine in what legend had a redhead come to a man and shown him the future, but he came up with no answer.

His expression as still as the seemingly frozen air around them, the young Sleeping Dragon's gaze slowly returned to the hill scene before the duo. Picture perfect. The emotion. The symbolism. Picture perfect.

"My dear lord Zhang, do not be so self-absorbed."

A gradual raising of the right arm in the direction of the hill; his slender digits relaxed.

"For demons spare no man."

Love. Hate. Passion. Fear. All one and the same.

The ambient cheers and conversation that resonated from the hills dropped dead silent. A man could hear but the sound of his own heart's beat shifting in rhythm as the scene changed, and hearts themselves were blackened.

In their wake; fear and hate was all that remained.

A few drawn swords. A little bit of bloodshed. And the chaos of love became the chaos of hate. Who was friend? Who was foe? Kill or be killed. Better one over another.

Cries.
Demons of the human soul.

Some looked in despair to the miracle man; the leader that who sat on a wooden chair; doing nothing. And of course the one that sat next to him. His face as calm and serene as the duskfall that was upon them; and his arm still outstretched. Screams from behind, as well resonated in the air; as magnificent hues of red and gold shone brightly from all sides; blazing village behind; majestic duskfall ahead.

Picture perfect.

A masterpiece created by the stationing of a few opportunistic lowlives.

His gaze still affixed lazily on the sight before them, the young Sleeping Dragon spoke once more. A tone chillingly warm.

"Do you see it? My dear lord Zhang? Do you see it?"
