One of my black friends when to America and everyone called him African-American. It pissed him off so much - he wasn't African or American, and he had this huge rant about how annoyed he was that nobody just called him "black", 'cause that's what he is. ![]() America's a weird place. |

^Why didn't they just call him English? Assuming he has the accent. |

In the USA there is the stereotype that black people love chicken, fried chicken especially because its a Southern staple and where do most AA stereotypes come from? Southern folk. They really do love fried chicken, its great Southern eating. The more racist one would be the watermelon eating but they really do eat watermelon. Though I would say the racism came from the way the black folk were drawn like more than any watermelon eating.

I honestly have no idea. If you hear someone with an English accent, surely you'd call them English rather than by their colour? Seems so dumb. Well, he was mostly just annoyed because they referred to him as African-American all of the time. I'd get it if he didn't speak, but I assume he wasn't mute the whole time, so idk. "English". |

the difference between an asian restaurant and 'caucasian restaurant' is that asians are qualified because lbr what non-asian person would want to apply for an asian restaurant, the food is cheap and therefore the pay is low. plus the job requirement is probably that you need to speak an asian language because the demographic you are aiming for is probably asian people. this goes as the same for western restaurants, where english is a requirement which many asians meet. therefore there shouldn't be a preference in who should be hired in western restaurants. |

^^^ and if you had a 'white' name, why would you want to work in an asian restaurant when you more likely of being hired than people who have foreign names at a western restaurant, where the pay is probably better. it's not really reverse racism at all lol. |

I'm not saying it's logical for a white person to apply at an Asian joint, or that they'd even want to. I'm just saying that it's not unlikely that they'd experience the same racist treatment that non-Caucasians encounter (suggested in article). edit: Somewhat related, my family is racist as fuck. Seriously, whites, blacks (esp.), arabs, the whole shebang so maybe my perspective is skewed but most other Asians I've met (parents' generation because the younger ones should know better) are pretty racist too even if they don't see it as such. I remember there being a (Korea-specific) discussion on this in the Kpop thread. |

actually if a caucasian person applied for an asian restaurant they'd be hired in a heartbeat based off the novelty that they could speak an asian language and treated better than the asian workers. this is just my opinion. |

IA they might be hired for the novelty but how many d'you reckon would get hired on this basis? Also, it's Australia so you shouldn't really be required to know any language other than English to land a job (I speak English at every Asian restaurant I've been to). But now I sound like I'm defending the people who are making these hiring decisions who probably are racist to some degree. |

i think that based off the fact that it's a multicultural country where there are in fact alot of people don't speak english, that a job requirement other than english is helpful, especially when australia is only one of two english speaking countries located in the asia pacific and basically surrounded by asian/polynesian countries |

Yeah, I think it's a neat idea to study another language regardless but it's still a predominantly English-speaking country so I don't think it's fair to have LOTE as a requirement (perhaps a desirable) unless the business is pitching to a niche client base and trying to offer a really authentic dining experience. |

i'm fine with LOTE being a requirement to cater towards a demographic seeing as in asia knowing english or several requirements is probably made a requirement to cater to westerners. |

But English is one language (generally taught in schools) whereas there are God knows how many different nationalities in Australia. It's unreasonable to expect most people (not of that nationality) to know Malay or Polish, for example. |

and i'm saying the LOTE requirement is fine given that there is a demographic that needs to be catered to with a certain language and i am guessing only a minority of businesses do this in comparison to jobs that don't have LOTE as a requirement. therefore people with white names who don't speak LOTE are still more likely to be hired regardless, so i don't see how it's unfair at all. |
