I sure do, the so called reclamation is a poor excuse of "taking back the insults", its this hilarious idea that if you use the words that were used to mock and oppress you they start to lose their mocking and oppressive qualities because now you are in charge of the word, you own it now and thus it cannot be used against you. This has been tried with a plethora of words, not just nigger but slut (taking back women's right to their sexuality, women can fuck whoever they want how many times they want) and queer (original meaning of the word is weird and that's why it was used for homosexuals, but now its WE ARE AND WE ARE QUEER WHOOOOOOOOO), etc. Does it work? In a way it does though I would say its more situational than general like if someone is calling you a slut the girl says Yeah I'm a slut AND? At least I get laid you soggy breasted bitch or something like that. It's kind of the same idea of laughing louder and harder when you fall so that other people's laughing is not as effective. But never in a million years will any word created and/or used to oppress lose all its power to hurt, however I don't believe that is the case with similar variants like in the case of nigger versus nigga because slang by its own value is mainstream within a certain group or even just with the overall general populace. |

On determining whether a word has been reclaimed--notice that I said "general consensus" rather than "universal consensus". I did agree that the process may vary from person to person depending on who is using the words/phrases, but that has little bearing on whether or not the word/phrase has been reclaimed in a particular community. I do concede that the idea of "general consensus" is quite fuzzy and even a little arbitrary, though. It's never sat well with me, tbh. More pertinently, the concept helps one understand why certain words/phrases eventually become acceptable to use for certain communities, and not for others. It is descriptive in nature, and does not seek to provide answers to moral questions. It was not brought up in order to justify a moral judgement either--I merely suggested it as a plausible explanation for a particular phenomenon. Actually, there might have been a few logical contradictions in what I wrote, esp. RE: context. I shall re-examine when I'm more sober. Hehe. Thanks for elaborating! But I still don't quite understand the link between the practical usefulness of a theory and its coherence... :/ Shan't bug you any more. I'll do a bit of reading on my time. |

Yes, I agree. I understand and sympathise with people who are hurt by the word considering its background, and if someone asks me not to say it to them because it's a word they're sensitive to for whatever reason they supply, then I'll respect that request out of a desire not to intentionally hurt a person. It's one thing to say it casually and accidentally upset someone, but to continue using it at that person with full knowledge that they take objection to it is what is colloquially known as "being a dick". However! To say a word is "always" unacceptable to use is not only stupid, but ignorant. There's no way you can justify such a thing with any logical argument, and if you're going to restrict what somebody can do, you should have logical arguments to justify that at the very least. It's all very good to speak of general consensus, but don't you then undermine the minority who still find that word irreparably offensive? If one person is hurt by it, but everyone else isn't, you can't dismiss that one person's opinion on account of the fact that more people disagree than agree with them. Offense is a personal thing and should be treated as such, so the feelings of the minority still matter, and should be considered. A general consensus is useless when it comes to talking about offense, since not only is it impractical to a ridiculous degree, there's also not even a method of measurement for it. Even then, how would you attempt to gather what the general consensus actually is? Unless you do a comprehensive study of every member of the minority directly affected by the word that are alive and cogent right now, you'll only be going off of your experience, which varies depending on what culture or area you're from, and what kind of people you know. The idea is both abstract and completely pointless - it exists to provide flawed justification for universal censorship based purely on your own experiences, without regard for context within which words are spoken. I'm not arguing with you, specifically, more the concept of reclamation in general. If a theory is incoherent, it can't be realistically applied in a practical sense. To attempt to enforce something that doesn't make sense will only result in nonsensical fuckery. The more sense something makes, the more practical it becomes. tl;dr Everything can be offensive - context and intent are the only things that determine whether it is or isn't. |

What was talked about? And thanks! ![]() oh, it's just a math joke b/c ε represents a veeeeery small positive number close to zero; for a lot of applications, you can ignore the value.
