It's over now, lol. I added a few more in a posted edit. Here: @Babycakes Another one I've thought of - the Legacy of K@!n series. You should probably stick to the Soul Reaver titles and Defiance, though - Blood Omen 1 & 2 aren't as good. *Kingdom Under Fire, too. Prince of Persia (I only really liked Sands of Time and Two Thrones, tho), GrimGrimoire, Persona series, Deadly Premonition, I second the other rec of Dead Space since it's a decentish survival horror though imo not that scary, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, Fallout, L.A. Noire, Prototype, Red Dead Redemption, Demon's Souls, Dragon's Dogma, Heavy Rain, Rage, Resonance of Fate, Skate 1, 2 & 3... I'd recommend checking out at least a few gameplay trailers for those. I didn't rec any that required too much thinking, like you said, so puzzle games were out. |

Dragon's Dogma isn't a great game for starters like bbcakes I think. It can be extremely frustrating. K!ngdom of Amalur: Reckoning might be a better choice. EDIT: nvm, looked at bbcakes list and she can handle it. But I didn't see a lot of rpgs in there, so idk. Still think KoA is better for now. DD is an intimidating game tho - and super frustrating lol |

Not really? I didn't find it challenging at all. The combat was innovative and fun, more action-oriented than most RPGs, but I've never heard anyone say it's anything other than super easy, lol. Why do you think it's frustrating? Aside from the Pawns and their not shutting up about IT'S WEAK TO FIRE, ARISEN crap. |

Thanks for the rec's you guys, both here and in the WEnt. I'll definitely check them out on uToob first when I get the chance. I enjoy puzzles/quizzes usually but games are kinda something I escape to for stress relief and an ego boost so I don't tend to look for challenging titles there. (Hence, most the titles I listed are "beat 'em up" types). edit: Yuwree you might like to check your inbox

Pawns don't EVER SHUT UUUUP Didn't find it challenging as much as I found it frustrating at times. It's a lot like Dark Souls in that the game can be kinda difficult to play with cheap death being pretty common for the first 10-20 levels. And, like Dark Souls, there are vast systems in the game that offer little or no explanation as to how they work which left me trying to figure it out on my own - took some time away from simple enjoyment. But, then again, I can at least play the game with a slim understanding if I wanted to. Just not a game i'd rec for people just starting out in rpgs is all. |

Understandable! I almost threw my controller on the Tower of Babel levels in Catherine, so I can see why you'd avoid puzzle games.

I made my Pawn an adorable tall Asian guy called Ken. I got so attached to him, ngl. You don't die in the first 20 levels unless you do something ridiculously stupid, like bumrush the level 50+ areas, so it's not really comparable to Demon's/Dark Souls in levels of difficulty. It's honestly pretty simple if you read the manual and pay attention to the tutorials, so idk, maybe we're just used to different types of games. |

Sure, but I honestly don't think it's reasonable to expect that of a person just starting out in rpgs - that kind of intensity is reserved for vets. I definitely didn't read the manuals and only mildy paid attention to tutorials when I first started playing rpgs like...a long long time ago lol. I suppose if someone just starting out is already in the mindset (ie; they research and research or they're coming from tabletop games like DnD or Tephra) then it's feasible. |

You don't think it's reasonable to expect players to read the manual? Well, I mean. Okay. That's really weird, but okay? |

Not unless you tell them that it's kind of necessary; most people - when trying out a new genre - want a game they can pick up and play fairly easily that doesn't require too much thinking before you even start playing. Which is why I think KoA is a better rec than DD for bbcakes since she specifically stated she wants to get away from stress - being bombarded with manuals and tutorials just adds on to it lol. It's just my personal opinion on it, and I don't think it's weird at all given what bbcakes seems to want out of a game. |

Right, okay. Most people I know think that's a stupid point of view and that they want a game that's fun but challenging with an innovative system that requires a learning curve and at least some level of thought, which is why games like FFXIII are frowned upon. I guess if you're catering to the crowd that wants everything in the game handed to them on a plate, then that's a reasonable perspective to have, but they don't make the manuals for aesthetic purposes... I read it that she wants a fun game, which doesn't necessarily have to entail making everything pants-on-head retarded and simplistic for children. SC and Tekken still require a learning curve to learn the character styles properly and get the most out of a game, and she's played (and presumably enjoyed) those. Obvs I could be mistaken, but. |

Well, I do pay attention to the tutorials that crop up during the game (esp. if I'm starting a new series) but I'm not really one for reading manuals. Partly because I'm lazy and don't take these games that seriously but also because I think things are less fun when you do too much research/reading beforehand. I like to be surprised. You two can p. much start a debate about anything. It's meant to be.
