it's different and that's not a nice name to address people who work for you.

Slave: a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

and none of those description fits him nor the maid

^^Maybe I'm being too casual about it. But basically, they (the people I'm talking about) were servants.. I'm not really sure if there's a more pc word for it.. They earnt their keep by doing things around the house. I've never used the term "slave" to address someone seriously before, and it might be a cultural thing, I'm definitely not as sensitive to the use of the word as, perhaps, an American might be. Sorry if offensive.

which part of asia is this?

i know in english speaking parts of asia they refer to people who work for the family as helpers/maids or whatever job they've been hired to do eg. driver.

Cambodia/Laos/SEcontinentalAsia

They weren't English-speaking and since I didn't speak the language, the translation I got from my friend was "slave". But I suppose the term "helper" is more pc and legally correct since people are not property. They didn't have specific jobs (e.g. driver, some people actually don't like other people driving their cars), they basically did whatever it was that needed to be done from mowing the lawn to fetching a cold drink from the 711.

yes we address them as maids here (or household assistant/domestic helpers in more politically correct terms). It's alright bb, it's just that slave has a very negative connotation to it and obviously im not a slave driver

Ah well I didn't actually know how to address these people so I just didn't speak to them (we wouldn't have understood each other anyway). Now I'm picturing you with a whip for some reason.

I talked to someone from Indonesia once and she said that employing someone to do your cooking and cleaning is very cheap over there. Same for someone I talked to from Morocco. Is that true?

Can't count the times the gardener has seen me naked.
He's a 50 something old man and he's know me since I was in diapers, still, it's akward for the both of us when I have to talk to him.

yep it's very cheap, perhaps about US$80/month. Jobs are pretty scarce here plus we have a huge population, so people with minimum education are resorting for labor jobs (maids/drivers/gardeners etc)

being seen by someone older who has known you all your life is quite different from being seen by someone much younger, newly employed and get to spend hours stuck in a car together *sigh*

oh well, what's done is done now -_-

told ya it's very cheap plus our currency is much lower so the prices for everyday stuff arent that expensive. Besides, most maids live in our houses so they dont get to spend much, we eat the same food, sleep, breath under one roof haha. They become a part of the family really, once a maid of mine who had been working with us for years decided to quit, my mum and I cried, I felt like I lost a sibling (she's only few years older) :'(

We could have palaces for a pittance! Been checking real estate sites, all I could buy *_* ...

I could have like a house, a villa and beach side property for the price of an average family home.

I bet citizens from other countries would list the same, not saying your concerns are undue but unless its Happiest Place on Earth Denmark then I think most will have much to criticize. What is intriguing is the power of money, you can get much for so little.
