It certainly seems so. I should've looked into going on exchange because I certainly don't have the kind of money they want from int. students + boarding. I mean, you do have some of the best institutions/facilities so I guess it's kinda worth it but you'd think it only fair for them to start ripping you off after you've been admitted. (My university claims to be a not-for-profit organisation  )
True, exchange is more cost-effective. International students do pay a hefty price, but universities really like them, so they make special arrangements sometimes; we have an official grading job here at the university that usually hires international students to do the work - it's meager pay, but because the int. students are employed by the university, they now get to pay resident fees instead of international costs. It's a way of working the system (kind of).

Oh, they prep you early, here: if you want a good education before college, you have to pay for it - for public schooling that includes AP exams, IB exams, english class reading list books, student parking passes. You even have to pay $15 to get your phone back if they take it away from you (cell phone use is prohibited from most high schools). When you get to the uni level, you get all new costs thrown at you. Luckily, I am not paying out the wazoo for schooling because I a) chose to stay in-state and b) receive a lot of funding. Even just going to school out of state costs about double what you'd expect to stay in-state, because state laws require their public flagship unis to give in-state residents priority (I have a friend from high school who is paying about 50k a year to attend UCLA, and he doesn't qualify for financial aid nor does he have many scholarships; so freakin expensive, but he's enjoying himself so).

Sorry for the wall of text :P
omg what course are they studying??

@babycakes-- Applying to university in Australia does not cost money? That's good to know. My plan B application alone has cost me ~USD250 already. Granted, 3/4 of it is because of int'l application, but still... -_-

it costs money if you're applying for postgraduate degrees, depending on which uni you go to. it costs about $30 for a year 12 student to apply to unis in my state.

SA i forgot to mention the application process for applying postgrad is completely different to undergrad. undergrad degrees you apply through a university admission service and postgrad degrees you apply to universities individually.

Ah. I see. I'll probably end up having to pay more if it comes down to that then, b/c int'l.
There are four(!) contingency plans. One includes Melbourne. Life is a mystery. ^_^

Yes, I actually just checked and it's something like $27 but I can't recall if the fee was applicable the year I applied. But it's $27 for access to the undergrad admissions service which allows you to apply for 10-12 different courses/universities in order of preference (within the state) and make amendments to these after your results are released, which is helpful. ^_^

Planck I'm not sure about international applications but they will definitely cost more, not the mention the actual course fees. Honestly, I love this city but it's not the cheapest place to live/study (if you're not simultaneously holding down a part-time job at the least). You might be interested in this brief article re: studying in Melbourne. On another note, I'm rather impressed you have many contingency plans, I didn't even have a plan A really.

That doesn't sound like a bad deal, really. But I'm about to graduate and have no plans to return to formal education. And, honestly, I don't much care for the kind of competition in the US system.

Could you moved to the state, in which the university you plan to attend is situated, in your senior year of high school, graduate from there and apply as an in-state student?

That's p steep, my whole degree is supposed to cost less than 20k. :)

edit: They're trying a different tack to get us to go to Warwick. Sorry to say it's not changed my mind.

He's studying biochem, believe :P

@bbcakes: No, you can't move to the state you're applying to so you can pay in-state tuition - you have to have been a state resident of that state for ~4years I think to qualify and you have to have a state ID (so ID card or driver's license). I am not sure how grad school competition is here for whatever you're a studying, but more than likely yeah, it'd be tough.

That's so cheap!! :O in-state tuition here is ~17k per year.
