This image of a fractal was generated by computer science students Chris Grzegorczyk and Kyo Lee using their real time interactive parallel visualization tool (started in Prof. John Gilbert's CS240A course). The picture is a rendering of the trajectories of points under the action of f(z)=z^2+c, for z and c in C. The intensity of each pixel reflects the frequency with which the corresponding region is visited (which is very expensive computationally), rather than the traditional method which reflects only the number of iterations.

Oh, which book?
Mathematics for Physicists by Philippe Dennery and Andre Krzywicki. it was suggested to me on amazon so I went and read a couple of pages in the preface and peeked at the table of contents: it covers a lot of math that I already learned (except for Fourier analysis but I have a separate book on that and am trying to bridge the gaps in my understanding during breaks between clearing dungeons in skyrim lol) but goes way more in depth as far as rigor is concerned. from the first couple of pages that i've read, they're using outdated ideas of set theory (book was originally written in like 1967 or w/e) but it's neat to look back.

i'm also a bit of a sucker for minimalist cover designs; yes, I do judge books by their covers :P

Huh. That does sound really interesting, especially the fact that it would give you historical context.

it doesn't intend to - these ideas on set theory were considered true for a very long time. A lot of topics in mathematics require very strict formal definitions/vocabulary that leaves no room for ambiguity, so these notions were - ultimately - cast aside for some more precise ones (or rather, once the definition was further clarified, the implication of that idea from the former definition was rendered obsolete).

most people would probably find it annoying that the book explains the foundations of set theory using these outdated ideas because set theory is incorporated in just about every other branch of mathematics, so it just results in a hassle to read everything else but I think it's kind of neat to see where math used to be, and a lot of the notions of set theory are assumed anyway so it doesn't really affect say like, vector spaces all that much. :P

I'd say most... archaic, I guess would be the word, sources don't intend to ever act as purely an example of how wrong they were back in the day, but irrespective of that, it's still interesting to read those texts to understand where knowledge was at that time. Sort of like how a medical handbook from, perhaps, the 15th century might look different to one currently in how they diagnose or understand disease, since germ theory didn't arise until the 19th century, iirc, so perceptions of what caused plagues and such would be vastly different to what we know hold as true.

Slightly incomparable, maybe, because of alternative paradigms - maths focuses more on objective formulas and methods than medicine does, and I suppose maths is only really limited by understanding, while medical science would be limited by technology as well.

I dunno. It's just cool, anyway. :D

Just received an e-mail and replied with a block of text. Probably someone I will never see again, but it's so good to keep in touch with someone who has something in common. I don't know, it's a wonder why seemingly compatible people seem to be separated by default.

Math moreso, at its core, focuses on intuition and a methodical approach to validating intuition. I don't really know much about medicine, so I can't really say much about it, but yeah it's probably more limited by technology; math is only limited by...well, i'd go so far as to say that math isn't limited by anything. perhaps sometimes it can be limited by technology, but that has more to do with examining a specific phenomena - mathematical modeling is a very important pillar in science and engineering - topics like those are considered physical mathematics and are within the scope of my new book. (although the books states it's more an "in between" of mathematical physics and physical mathematics so there's more of a focus on understanding and proofs as opposed to computation; the preface states that the aim of the book is to enhance the communication between mathematicians and physicists because things are approached drastically differently in both fields).

but yes it's really cool! I love talking about it as i'm sure you've noticed...

Yeah, I'd say, since maths is more a theoretical process than anything, it's limited just by how intelligent any given society is at the time, which... Doesn't fluctuate that much, surprisingly.

Medicine is limited by technology in that you can't really confirm germs or viruses if you can't actually see them, which would be a problem in determining their existence and running experiments into how they work to try and see how you can subvert them to make them less deadly.
Since it's a science, too, you'd be limited by scientific methodology and the cultural influences of, say, passed down remedies, e.g. an elephant's tusk can be ground into powder to remove bodily toxins in Chinese traditional "medicine". Which is kinda contributing to the poaching craze of certain animals that are associated with certain remedies, but hey...

Talk as much as you want! I love reading about it. :P
