Sorry if im interrupting this really interesting (and intriguing) conversation. I was wondering if anybody here was particularly learned when it comes to math, im looking to go to uni in a few months time to study something thats always really interested me (Comp. Sci.) but in all honest, my math skills are fairly atrocious. Ive been sort of self teaching myself algebra and algebraic equations in my spare time, but im just wondering what subject of math to tackle next, thanks.
Hi. I study physics and mathematics :D

i'm not sure where you're planning to attend, but at my uni computer science majors are only required to take calculus I-III and a course in non-proof based linear algebra (but here we have a special CS course of lin. alg. because idk something specific that pertains to coding I think). If you're self-teaching, I recommend studying linear algebra because you will not need as much guidance in understanding the concepts. this book is excellent for self-study. If you would like, I have the pdf file of it (textbooks are expensive...) and I can send it to you.

you may also have to take a course on discrete mathematics b/c logic, but be careful if you decide to dive right in - it's a large area of study, and the more advanced ideas can be really counter-intuitive and confusing (probability especially).

Most of the time, I notice when people say they're not very good at math, they're a lot better than they think; depends on who you surround yourself with, I think. I'm around a lot of older math or physics majors so I feel mediocre at best a lot of the time, but sometimes I can solve problems they can't; you are probably better at math than you give yourself credit for.
If you could send me the pdf that'd be fantastic thanks (pm or e-mail? :$)

I was really rubbish at math in high school but I accredit that to a general dis interest and not having really... expressive teachers, I did a short course of 'catch up maths' at a uni last year and found that when math was actually used in practical problems it was much easier to understand.

idk how to attach things to pm's on zetaboards  so email would probably be best.

omg, do you live in the US?? Math is taught terribly here and most teachers don't exactly know how to gets students interested in it. I'm glad you're liking math now!

Actually I live in Australia (Grew up in rural/country aus) where the math teaching was really barebones and uninspired, like I barely know how to do fractions and ive got no idea how ratios mathematically work (I get the theory behind them tho). Only reason I passed year 12 math was because I memorised what to write to show working out, same with the rest od my class.

Actually physics is what really got me interested in maths. I love the concept that everything is guided and governed by a set of rules or laws, it really changes your perspective on alot of daily issues. Of it wasnt for the virtual 0 job/research opportunities I'd definitely study physics.

Ooooh I see. well, if you like math because of physics, you'd really enjoy calculus I think.

calc I is easy to self-teach, so if linear algebra gets boring take a break and do some 2D optimization problems! ^_^
