Regardless if it's fake or not, it shows just how little people know about Islam.

and no, we don't all know that; a lot of women - even activists for women's rights - wear a niqab not because they're necessarily forced to, but because they believe in modesty (which is totally fine); to wear it in the west is seen as "bizarre" and is banned in some areas, but women still choose to do it because they believe in what it stands for. to assume that they're wearing it only because they're forced to is presumptuous.
Modesty? They can dress modest without that absurd attire. To me it seems like a man's opinion on modesty and they have to follow it. I'm sure some wear it because they want to be ''modest'' but it's probably because they got used to it already; You can get used to anything if you live with it long enough and seeing everyone around you wear one doesn't help one bit. Yes, it can be because of modesty reasons, but you can't deny that it's also heavily influenced by religion. Some people say that it's their culture, well of course it is! In some countries their culture is defined by religion! And we all know where most of these women that wear niqab's and burkas come from, not the most progressive countries when it comes to women's rights.

The only person I ever asked about her hijab was a girl from my class and she told me that she had to wear it because her father and older brother told her to; she didn't have a choice.

Perhaps I just don't get why women would voluntarily wear that so I jump to the conclusion that they are forced to wear it because of social pressure.

Hope I don't insult anyone with my somewhat ignorant opinion on the matter.
maybe you should read up personal accounts on why women would voluntarily wear traditional islamic head dress. idt one opinion is enough to account for everyone.
It's not just her story that made me come to that conclusion in my head.

Isn't verse 33:59 from the Koran the reason why they make women cover themselves?

Wow, Windmill, your ignorance level...

How many muslims do you actually know or are friends with? I'm muslim, I don't wear a hijab nor does anyone in my family, but I know plenty if not most, girls who volontarily choos to wear it. Like my close friend who's relatively religous decided when she was like 19 that she wanted to wear hijab, even though no one in her family does except her mother and they all found/find it strange that she did

I'm not saying that ALL women in islamic countries are forced to wear them. Some don't have to and others choose to wear them, but that doesn't mean that there are no women out there that are being forced to wear one. Also, I am not talking about a hijab - I am talking about Burqua's and Niqab because that's what that lady was wearing in that photo.

It's fake and we all know she started wearing it because of her religious believes or pressure from religious people in her environment.

Not funny tbh.

Sorry i'm just now getting around to addressing this, I was out.

Honestly, I don't understand how you can call someone's cultural attire "absurd" w/o being insulting so I imagine you would probably upset some people with that comment.

The keywords here are "to you"; to you they sound oppressive, to you they seem archaic, to you they're stupid for wanting to practice a religion that you think is make-believe. But that's not what many women who practice Islam believe, and people should be respectful of their decision and their choice; no one is saying that wearing a burqa or a niqab isn't influenced by religion - most of the world is in someway or another influenced by religion - but you're not criticizing their government, you're criticizing their beliefs with your statement and that is something completely different.

You are lucky to live in a country that has secular laws because for a lot of people, myself included (because yes, most of our laws are influenced by evangelical christianity because most conservative politicians here are evangelical christian - Texas probably has some of the most religiously influenced laws in the country that are particular to our state), we don't have that luxury; religion is a part of everything you do, regardless of whether or not you practice it. With that aside, i'd like to reiterate my point that that doesn't mean women are always forced to outwardly express their beliefs - whether or not you agree with it, modesty is an important part of their identity and if that's how they choose to express their devotion you're in no position to judge it, especially since you're a stranger looking into a culture or religion that you will never be a part of.

I hope you don't think i'm attacking you or anything.

It does suck but it also has an upside. It means I get to wear tank tops for four months or more out of the year, and I love tank tops. They're easy and I own approximately one hundred. The one vain thing about me is the fact that I like to show off my shoulders lol.

I'm curious about this, so... A question for you guys: Do you consider yourself a feminist?
Nope. Egalitarian.
those two philosophies are not mutually exclusive.

i've come to detest this point of view, especially when touted by men, but i suppose it would be a waste of words to explain why on this forum

No, I know - feminism is just a branch of egalitarianism, really. It's just that the word has been associated way too much with just the radfem sects, the ones who say that gay men are only gay because they hate women too much to be straight, and I don't particularly want to have to associate myself with them in any way, so I just call myself egalitarian to avoid that.
