i really like some of the akb girls, but the "no dating" clause will never not weird me the fuck out. it's really patriarchal and disgusting. i can't even watch the video. i get that it's a cultural thing - maybe even some kind of twisted publicity move - but how can it be considered normal and healthy that a 20 yr old girl has to be publicly humiliated for having a boyfriend. i guess this just puts k-idols' attitude toward dating into perspective - it may get annoying how many of them do the whole "i've never been kissed before!" shtick but at least their personal lives aren't policed to this degree |

I was here when it was made! And yeah, Akimoto had a scandal where she stayed over at her acting coach's house because she said she was practicing late. She decided on her own to step down as a captain because she felt she let everyone down, and then she ran the Tokyo marathon to make it up to her fans.
Why? Did you like it? This one is a cute kitten, though...

I've been a little numb and I haven't commented much on this. How I feel as someone who does follow Japanese Idol culture and AKB48: She's a first generation member and she's witnessed firsthand at what scandals can do. It was as early as last year after when it was discovered that Yonezawa Rumi and Hirajima Natsumi both had long-term boyfriends. Evidence of sleepovers (self-taken photos) from hidden Twitter accounts. All this discovered as Yonechan was on a flight to Singapore too with hardly a way to defend herself, if she could. Miichan knew better than to take the risk, and did it anyway. She violated the trust the fans, other members and management. She broke her contract that was reassessed just last year because of the scandal above. All the girls signed. The contract states that none of the girls will enter into a relationship (interestingly, with a guy or a girl). If she wanted a relationship, or to live a "normal life", she should graduate. Still pursue acting or variety hosting but remove herself from AKB48 and the "no dating" rule. She broke the rules, management decided to demote her to trainee level, which - that's fine. I like the research students and they still preform, they even have a show they're regularly on. Miichan herself decided to shave her own head, there are reports from their theater manager Togasaki that it was too late to stop her. What's happening now is... a circus. I hate how the international media is portraying this without considering of the contract or Idol culture. It was Miichan's decision to shave her head as a desperate attempt to repent for breaking the rules. Which she did. I wish she hadn't shaved her head, I wish she had just graduated, or taken the demotion and been done with it. |

I agree with Ninja a little. It is a contract that she willingly signed herself, and if she wants to break it, she should accept the consequences that were outlined when she joined. I dunno. tbh, while I disagree with the fact that there is such a harsh requirement, nobody forced her to be an idol. |

Not all fans have good intentions (mainly male fans) akb48 are known for their huge male fanbase and you'd expect them to react not so well to news of any of the members dating anyone other than themselves. Some even more gross acts I heard and read about are from the face to face and handshaking events where the guys cover their own hands with their semen and shakes the girls hands whilst telling them all sorts of inappropriate and disgusting things they want to do to the girls. It's just outrageous. Even one of the girls spoke up in her blog about bad fan behaviours. |

I don't mind either way. If you prefer the dinosaur, I'll upload that and use that one instead. They're both awesome, but I just figured I should use the kitten as a change.
Akimoto is my kami-oshi forever. Although I think Miyazawa is the cutest... Yeah, it is a little stupid that people judge her for it. I don't approve of the clause itself, but I do understand why she has to abide by it, since... Well, she signed that contract of her own, free, autonomous will, and she can't complain when she willingly broke it. idk. |

That was Kasai Tomomi and she complained about it on twitter, or some other social media account. The gross fans don't cover their hands (since they're checked for that), more so what happened is some guys take it upon themselves to tell her they masturbated to her, etc. |

yeah old habits die hard i guess lol. though i think it is pretty common forum ettiquette on zetaboards at least, if only for organizational purposes. there's not an insane amount of activity on this board yet so i think it's ok to just do it on a request basis - ie, if someone is getting annoyed by a lengthy discussion/debate, for example this akb thing, i would respect their (politely expressed) wish to spoiler it just to respect them. but only if someone speaks up about it. ANYWAY, because this topic interests me, could those of you who seem to be more hardcore j-pop fans than i am (artichoke or ninja) elaborate on your thoughts about the "no dating" rule? i hear people saying she signed a contract and should accept the punishment, which, fair enough. but i think for a lot of the fans who are angry and non fans as well, the problem is that the rule exists in the first place, that it is a significant part of akb's marketing, and that it's enforced in a way that kind of violates these girls' privacy and gives them no benefit of the doubt. and for me at least, "it's idol culture" doesn't really satisfy me. something that's ingrained into a culture can still be fucked up. if akb ever wants to be taken seriously as a musical act and expand its influence past a pretty narrow market (which maybe they don't care about as much as k-pop seems to, idk) they probably need to modify or get rid of the clause, because most people not entrenched in the fandom see it as a way to pander to creepy otakus, which it essentially is. it doesn't reflect well on the group, imo. i guess you could argue that it's the entire purpose of idols to be marketed to these people, and changing this aspect would defeat the purpose and make them into something different from "idols," but... i know akb is popular in japan and i don't think it's good to propagate this kind of lifestyle as something young girls should aspire to. :/ |

Ah Kasai, I respected her so much after that. And didn't Sayaka reprimand a fan who gestured rudely at her, the way she did it was apparently very polite and mature and she still shook his hand aiish I respect these girls so much for taking the shit some fans throw their way. Oh Ninja you're always so informative

Yeah, I really disagree with the fact that the clause exists, because it just seems to feed delusionals, but I think that's basically what AKB48 is. I mean, some might contest that and argue that AKB48 (and other idol groups) are just springboards to the entertainment industry, but I find that incredibly hard to believe, judging by how many people graduate and just fade out of obscurity, so AKB48 is clearly a phenomenon in and of itself. Plus, their personalities are manufactured beyond BELIEF - there've been a lot of reports saying that most of the girls are nothing like they are BTS while on the screen. idk. AKB48 is one of those things where you know what you're getting into when you sign up, so I think you should acquiesce to those requirements stated in your contract, because you read them and you knew what they were and you accepted them, so you should just deal with it. This is their job - imagine if any other employee flaunted the contract they signed up to, like a doctor, for example. |

Just to clear some stuff up: AKB48 is the national idol group of Japan, the largest or the second largest music market in the world depending on which articles you read. That isn't a narrow cast, the shadow they throw is immense. Though their future plans aren't so clear at the moment... "world domination", I don't think that's as important to AKB48 compared with other groups around the world. As for music quality, they've won the Japan Record Award twice now. -- As a method to keep the girls away from scandals, I'm fine with the no dating rule being in place. Yes, that seems like a fail argument considering where we stand currently with Miichan's scandal. Is the rule archaic? Very much so! -- A little on Jpop: Jpop is very much it's own separate entity, a graduation in an idol group is the eventuality, you would never say the same about a Kpop group (except maybe After School? But I'm not 100% sure on how they operate). AKB48 itself, is a stepping stone, this is widely accepted, you should use your time there to realize what you want to do. When they surveyed the girls the answers were: Singer, actress, model, voice-over artist, talento (variety show), etc... only one girl said she wanted to be an "eternal idol", the rest of them see AKB48 and being idols as temporary. A lot of these girls have been on the audition track for years before they're accepted into AKB or a different Jpop group, it's not something you just "fall into" by accident, it's an active decision on your part. And all these idol groups have the same "no dating" policy. If you want to watch the audition process, look shows like Star Hime (NMB48's audition process) or other documentaries. The sheer amount of girls who audition is staggering and if you make it into AKB, the generation are now into the double digits at this point, most likely it's going to be a while before you get any attention, if at all - which is the biggest likelihood. So, why do this at all? Because it's different from being your average school girl, attending classes, hanging out at malls, hanging out at home. And yes, there is positives to that life like, well, falling in love and having relationships... but that's the cost, the sacrifice, committing their time now (teen to early twenties) so they can have future careers in their chosen field. And there's always going to be time for relationships later. So many girls would die to be in Miichan's position pre-scandal, the national idol group of the second largest music industry in the world. All the perks of being a first generation girl, because you started first and have been there the longest. Being beloved by your fans and given numerous career opportunities. -- I am not saying Miichan doesn't deserves love, what I am saying is, she should have been a professional first. Being an idol, is a job. And being a Japanese idol at this point in time means no dating. Edited by ninja, Feb 2 2013, 05:22 AM.

Three beagles, one german shepherd, one schnauzer, one dachshund and one chihuahua. We had to give three mutts away because I'm moving out of my mother's house and since my younger brother is away most of the time at work or at school, she can't take care of 7 dogs by herself. A bit late, and what a coincidence, before I came here, I just finished watching a disgusting video of a 25 yrs old man abusing a cat... (don't ask, why did I watch this... ) and there, you animal lovers discussing your pets...Dog lover here, some of you already saw a picture of my dog ages ago. ^^ Ah, ferret... always wanted a ferret. @Anon: Lol, sorry for the supper long post. Your puppy is so cute! I've always loved rottweilers. They're still seen here as vicious dogs though, same with dobermans and pitbulls. Aww, too bad your mom doesn't like dogs. Maybe one day. ^^ Mine doesn't either and with my brother and I, it was like having 9 animals in the house. Pan was a rescue ferret, he was around 4-5 years old when I got him. Poor fella was so malnourished and so scared of people. He eventually got used to me and became a sweet and playful guy. He used to sneak out of his cage and into bed with me. ^^ They're like a mix between cats and dogs, sleep for most of the day, and become hyperactive when they're awake. Can be trained to do tricks too, although mine only learned to fetch and roll on his poop. @Poopy: You're mistaking the name for Macuilxochitl, the Aztec God of arts, beauty and flowers, better known as Xochipilli. Macuilticatl is also a nahuatl name, but it means playful child, and oh boy does the name fit him. Edited by Ihla, Feb 2 2013, 07:55 AM.

ehhhhh. sorry ninja but i just cannot get on board with the "no sex while idol-ing" rule. can't really buy it as a method to "protect" them from scandals, bc as you pointed out it doesn't prevent scandals from happening, just magnifies what should be nothing into a huge deal. seems like most of what you're saying just boils down "this is just the way the system works". again, OK, but people are arguing that the system is fucked up and needs to change, because it no longer serves its purpose and/or never was a good idea in the first place. and it won't change unless people (mostly, the fans) speak up and say they don't want it anymore. i just don't think anyone should be allowed to sign a contract that lets a company to fuck with their personal relationships. "being a professional" should not include having to be/appear to be a virgin at age 20. it shouldn't constitute a "betrayal" of fans to be seen in the vicinity of some dude's apartment. the fact that she agreed to this of her own "free will" (when she was 13...) doesn't change the creepiness of the clause. and the fact that there are other 13-year-old girls who apparently think giving up their freedom to interact with who they want outside of work is an acceptable sacrifice to make for stardom doesn't really make me feel better about any of this. |
