spider alert
See? See?!
Spiders are our friends!
The big furry ones that like to crawl around in my room aren't. They also cross the line when they like to crawl on my face when I'm sleep. =_= The cute little harmless ones that dwell in the corner of my bathroom are okay.

"Pure math" is actually one of two overrarching fields of mathematics  so no: I don't really like pure math too much but I find that certain branches within that domain - like number theory - are really important and have considerable influence in other fields of math; it's why I was proving 1+1=2, the Peanu axioms are a set of rules that define operations for natural numbers. I like to go back and prove all of them because sometimes I feel like, while I know 1+1=2 because I use it everyday and we're taught that in school, I don't actually understand it.

but yeah, I like math as a whole - if that's what you were originally asking. I'm a physics/math major, so while there's some overlap, I generally find math to be inherently useful and fun all by its lonesome! :P

The education system here, before university, is actually severely lacking when it comes to mathematics education; we just don't teach it effectively here and it puts a lot of people off from learning it because there's a believed association between genius and math. but that's just not true -_- I think we should take a note from the French when it comes to teaching math; they've always pushed math very hard throughout schooling.
Too much for a simple language student like me to understand

Just kidding, one of my closest friend's brother studies similar things and he's always telling me about these sorts of things. It sounds interesting but I just can't with numbers, so I'll leave it to people who can.

I see, sounds like a challenging thing to study but you seem to like it a hella lot so u go gurl work dem numbers

We have the same issue here, I'm one of those people who was put off from studying it  Actually you can drop math at the age of 16 and never have to study it again if you so wish. Well thank goodness I don't live over the channel then!

/waits for Pandar to come in and lecture about the correct use of the term "hella"

At the university level, even if you're a liberal arts major, you usually have to take some kind of math course; definitely not the same intensity that science or engineering majors take, but you still need it as a core requirement for the university. I mean, I gotta take a social science course like psychology even though I for sure know i'm never gonna use it but the uni wants you to be well rounded. Well, it says it wants you to. Not sure if I believe it fully =_=

I will be sure to werk dem numbers :gaypimp:

you keep preachin in other languages, gurl

I remember taking calculus in high school and just hate hate hating my life. I'm decent at math but found it incredibly dry (no offense Orange)

But I quite enjoyed my logic class in undergrad. I found it orderly and actually kind of interesting because I could attach philosophy to it. I pissed everyone off because I would that nerd who worked Aristotelian logic into everyday conversations.

Lawd. So do you just study pure math or what? I know the education system is pretty different over there compared to here. I have one book related to what I'm supposed to be studying and I haven't opened it in months

Doing math even as the delivery man arrives to deliver more math I can't... I really can't do math at all but I admire your enthusiasm for it B-)

I have Dyscalculia (I was told this when I was a kid I don't even really know if it's a thing or not) so I just can't really do math at all. Not entirely related to math but my spatial awareness is so bad I couldn't even do my product design degree properly, it's part of the reason I had to dropout

Oh what, the system really is different at university level then. I go to an edgy hippy school though so I'm not entirely clued up on how things work here at a more conventional university. Must be crappy to take something pretty unrelated to your major, the only extra courses we can take here are language or history/culture related. Oh hey we can even take Sanskrit, edgy right?

You enjoy those numbers, I'll go back to reading Confucius quotes in the original classical Chinese. It's a really fantastic thing which will benefit me heavily in the future. B-)

I honestly believe it was, at least partially, due to the way it was taught to you; my high school calculus courses were also rather dry but I was also frequently competing in competitions so I was more engaged in math than most. (Also, my calc teacher was a dick but that's another story altogether -_- ) Coming to uni made me realize that math is so much more than what I was previously making it: I liked it primarily because I was good at it in high school. Now I like it because it's so interesting (and being ok at it helps :P )

Logic is the fundamental building blocks of mathematics, although I don't think i'd survive a semester of "if then" statements and p q tables

Side note: one of the radio djs that I used to "work" with (I use quotations b/c he normally just slept during the set and his partner had to take the reigns and I was technically just a guest b/c I hadn't had training lol) is a philosophy major. Not sure what his thoughts on math are, tho.

The summer before I started uni, I bought a couple of books so I could try and teach myself how to write and read in chinese. I was only mildy successful at it, but I can read basic newspapers and maybe like...weather forecasts or something  (simplified, ofc). Tried writing a fan letter to Hebe but when I read it back to myself it seemed like a 5 year old wrote it so I never took up Spooky's (or was it Munchie?) offer on trying to get it to her.

If I were to try and learn another language, it'd probs be chinese but I also don't have the ability to travel extensively and immersion is pretty important when it comes to learning a language; it's a luxury I just don't have atm.

Hey hey Pod my darling. Your school sounds way cooler than mine lol.

And Orange that's probably true. The math teachers I had always seemed that they were only teaching because that's the only thing they could do with their degree at the time and teaching AP classes was pretty decent money. Also, I use syllogisms all the time to mess with people.

Because I studied Japanese before my reading and writing in Chinese is pretty competent already. That's pretty impressive though, it's really difficult to learn and you're right about the immersion. To be honest your simplified is probably better than mine then, we have to learn traditional for now and only learnt simplified very briefly. Which I'm totally ok with simplified looks gross

Zicke, my school is kind of cool and terrible at the same time. It's so laid back that the admin is a shambles. My results for the year are actually being withheld because they goofed so badly with my fees or something ╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭

It's sad but true for the most part: public school teachers are bound by a very strict syllabus and it's easy to get disenchanted with teaching when you only do it because that's where your paycheck is coming from.

I'm very lucky I went to a magnet school and was in special programs - a lot of schools, especially in downtown urban and rural areas, don't have those kinds of programs, so no seasoned teacher wants to work there; education in general here is really important to me, it's a newfound passion I think, thanks in part to my enthusiasm for math and wanting to get more people interested in it.

All the Europe! Save up some money and come over, I have a holiday house in the south of France and wine is 3 euro a litre... :wine:

I picked up French really quickly when I was younger because Mauritian creole is just like shanty French, but as soon as they told me I could learn Japanese instead I just gave up and decided I wanted to read moonrunes instead.
