I'm just going to guess 1/2 for these, if I don't know in the future. Explain reasoning plz. |

Then, at best, i'd only give you 1/2 credit since you won't have an argument to back up your guess. anyway, on to the explanation: we needed the conditional probability - P(1 blue face hidden GIVEN 5 blank faces) 5 blank faces only occurs in two cases: 1) one blue face AND oriented in the right direction so that the blue is on the bottom 2) no blue faces, in which every orientation would give five blank faces. 1) has a probability 6/27*(1/6)= 1/27 2) has a probability 1/27*(6/6) = 1/27 hence P(1) / P(1 U 2) = 1/2, which equals the conditional since P(5 blank faces | 1 blue face hidden) is 1. ok y'all, that's it for now! I really gotta go finish hw before it gets too late. Leave lingering questions if you want! ![]() |

Let ε <0
|
P(1 face blue and seeing all blank) = 1/6*(6/27) = 1/27 P(all faces blank) = 1/27 P(seeing all blank) = 2/27 P(1 face blue given that you see all blank) = (1/27) / (2/27)= 1/2 ^the conditional probability is what needed to be found. This is the less formal way to describe what's going on |

what my reasoning was right then. Maybe I just worded it weird. If you paint the sides of the original cube blue and then cut them up into 27 pieces you will have 7 cubes that have at least 5 sides that do not have paint on them. So if you see 5 paintless sides, it could be one of the 6 cubes with it's blue side facing down, or it could be the paintless cube with any of it's sides facing down (6 possible ways to set that cube down). So out of the 12 ways to see 5 paintless sides, 6 ways have involve a cube with blue painted face. |

This is more understandable. Thinking about it in terms of unnecessarily complicated fractions and calculations that come out of nowhere confused me a bit, considering I don't think of things in that way. |

Merp, it's right but it's not...worded...in...a...way...I LIKE???? Your wording is super imprecise. I will give you an extra two letter back: DING DING ![]() @Arti: those "complicated fractions" are necessary when looking at the entirety of this problem if you want to provide a clear and concise solution. The answer anon provided would not be accepted for IMO, but it is correct. |

No, I know, but since I've not done anything involving precise probability in about 2 years, it's a bolt from the blue. Phrasing things like a logic problem, as the Anon did, makes me understand the reasoning behind it more, if that makes sense.

ok, that's great! If that's how you learn, then that's how you learn ![]() However, what you said was that they were "unnecessarily complicated fractions and calculations that come out of nowhere" which is not true - those numbers have a reason for being there; they were literally the number of X event (such as seeing all blank faces) over the total number of outcomes... just manipulated around a bit based on what you needed to find. That's hardly "unnecessary" in fact, that's the point!!

Im so confused, how do you divide a cube into 27 smaller ones, doesnt it need to be an even number? OTL Im so stupid |

I still don't get it Unless theres like 1 cube in the middle and all the others are based off the faces of the original cube as opposed to four cubes arranged in a cube and the other cubes being based off of them Im so dumb |
