Thanks Arti, although it might be fun to have no idea what the heck anyone is saying to me. Language barriers are to be expected so I'm not fussed about it, unless the locals are super snobby about it and/or kinda racist then this might be an issue

You're in luck, then, if you choose to come to the U.K.! British people love Australians.

LOL so I've heard, and it's a cinch for us to get a visa. Only I'm not certain what I'd do with myself in the U.K. (to get by), I was thinking of getting a gig teaching English in the other countries but this won't be an option in Britain. edit: Zicke that seems like a safe combo (you can't really go wrong), do you have other options? |

You could teach English in Britain, if you choose to teach a class oriented towards new immigrants who have no prior knowledge thereof. I reckon you could make quite a bit of money doing that if you ask around. You could also teach primary level English in Wales/Northern Ireland/Scotland, if you choose an other language dominated area. |

anon the outfit is pretty much exactly like that, except the shirt is short sleeved and i'll likely wear flats because I can't walk in heels. babycakes I have a few long sleeved shirts but it's too hot here to wear them, i'd be miserable all day. |

I'd have to learn that meself (it would help me identify as an 'strayan overseas though)And more importantly, I don't reckon anyone in their right mind would pay me to teach them this and I don't want to deal with crazies, which is why I'm majoring in psychology, yes. |

da That outfit would look like a waitress uniform if you dont use heels. Maybe shoes with a small heel instead of flats? |

like there's such things as formally teaching the bogan accent *i'd love to formally learn scottish or irish accent tho, so I could confuse people by just doing simple things like ordering foods or asking for directions* I always lol at the use of strayan hahaahhaa....the first time I heard the term 'straya c**t' i was like, the hell O_O

True, though I'd have to do a bit more research towards this targeted segment of the market. My primary concern is with the competition, considering most people living in the U.K. presumably speak English and are, thus, capable of teaching it to some degree, not to mention university graduates who are much more qualified to teach the language than I am (considering I'm actually more familiar with Australian English than British English, although I see too many differences, and won't be familiar with the local dialect). It makes much more economic sense to pursue this activity in an area less saturated with its supply. But I get that you were merely pointing it out as a feasible option. Zicke well that's gonna limit your choices definitely, i hate dressing professionally in warm weather, makes me conscious of sweat as well. i'd go with anon's advice and go vestless, also considering the climate. |

Dear Artie the poll master, where could I read the "reasons for dislike/like couple" from your poll? cause I noticed you compile it into a certain label(?).. anyway thanks for your hard work, I was pretty interested in knowing the result regardless.

Yes, that is true, most in the U.K. can speak English and are potentially capable of teaching it, but not all people who speak English are teachers. There is more than certainly a market for a native English speaker to teach immigrants formal English, or just enough English to survive here without confusion, and I doubt it's that saturated with competition. Admittedly, though, I haven't looked. Yeah, content analysis kind of requires that kind of categorisation for quantitative data to be turned into qualitative data. If you like, I could post the pairing and the appropriate reason for liking/disliking here, for you to read? |

Babycakes, what's your primary reason for choosing European countries though? I reckon, you could probably find the same opportunities in Southeast Asia. Cheaper cost of living too, although, if having a vacation and going around Europe is your primary objective then I understand the choice.

I'll get started on it when I wake up. It's about 6:36am where I live, so I'm a bit tired, even if my sleep schedule is fucked. Should I quote verbatim, or should I just summarise their basic points? |

Yeah, I'm just trying to find a way to see as much of Europe as I can. I figure I'm not going to have enough money to just travel and have fun without some sort of income so that's why I'm thinking about potential job opportunities. At the moment, though, I’m still in that I-just-came-up-with-the-greatest-idea-ever stage where all I can think about are the pros of going to any European country so that’s why I asked about possible cons of finding employment/living in those countries (for a foreigner). I do know that it’d be easier/cheaper to find same opportunities in SEA but (as I mentioned earlier) I was originally from the region and, though I can’t say I’ve travelled the entire continent, it’s not the most appealing alternative for me. I did/am still considering SK but I guess the bottom line is that I wanna travel Europe. ![]() @Arti I’m considering both qualified and unqualified competition. I’m not an educator by trade so I can’t compete with people who actually studied to become teachers. But also, though I realise that teaching English to immigrants is probably as relevant in the U.K. as it is in AU (perhaps more so), if it’s anything like it is here, there are lots of people willing to provide this service for free, and considering that many immigrants come to the U.K. for economic reasons.. I’m not certain whether there really is very much demand for English tutors in the rest of Europe but it can only be an advantage for me to be one of the few native speakers available for this purpose. D’you happen to have other suggestions for jobs/earning money in the U.K.? If I do go, I’ll probably end up doing what most Aussies (who aren’t accountants) do when they go and work at a pub or something. edit: @Rex my mates and I usually say "f#$%en straya mate" when we're feeling particularly patriotic. Usually on Straya Day whilst putting another shrimp on the barbie wearing our flags and zinc. |
