Now I feel like re-watching 'Orange is the new black'. (This also answers Rexie's question because they both play in that tv-show) Orange, look at this picture of Sharapova. Also rather gay and she looks hot.

@Rexie: it's from 'Orange is the New Black' and the girl in the white is the main character - Piper. @Wind: are those pajama pants I see?

CONGRATS, ANON! Those answers are correct And it is a brain teaser; makes your brain work ![]() I can never gauge what math background everybody has; for some people, riddle type number theory questions are confusing and for others, calculus or probability you have to steer clear from. Decided to switch up the type for once just to figure out the range of topics I can cover; using questions from just one topic is so boring, and i've almost exhausted my list of number theory topics that aren't too intimidating (ie; the questions with more words than numbers). Anon, you always seem to get my questions either partially or completely correct! Makes me happy

It could be because I don't have much background in number theory or probability but your other questions were indeed more 'riddle' like to me, solvable by thinking it through, maybe thinking outside your comfort zone a bit. That's what makes them teasers to me, they're solvable with basic logic, just need adjustments and approach. I guess this one was different to me because the conditions were simply laid out and, with the required background knowledge of the math, the solution was formulaic to get. I don't know about other countries, but in the US calculus is not standard for high schoolers and maybe not even a core requirement at some unis (for some majors). But now that I think about it, you could use a spreadsheet to do this problem too. (Everyone should have working knowledge of Excel, it's an amazing tool.) But I definitely see your point when it comes to gauging the viable scope of your questions. It's nice to have questions over a variety of subjects. And yeah I really like doing your teasers Kinda been hogging them so I sat on my answer for a while hoping to help people with their answers but no one posted their guesses with their methods. I didn't want it to go unattempted though so I posted mine. |

Shut up, jyhu ![]()
The questions i've previously given have all been from old practice MAA/math olympiad competition questions, or questions from Math Club for when we're doing Putnam practice. They're not all riddle-esque I guess, but yeah...I figure that'd be the kind most people are comfortable with because they don't usually presuppose prior extensive math knowledge. Meh, I don't think it's logic that makes them easy to solve, but I guess some people look at it differently; whenever I look at a problem I try a couple of ways to go about it - I categorize it before I even attempt. When I first saw the dwarf problem, I tried doing a combinatoric approach and make a graph but my background in graph theory is blaaah so I didn't get very far after a couple of lines and vertices (couldn't see a distinct pattern that way); but my background in series, sequences and limits is much better! So I tried solving it that way and it worked. idk, people just look at things differently. I thought the most recent problem was still kind of tricky even with prior calc knowledge - it's not necessarily intuitive to know that you should probably set the minimal time at which Yoona needs to leave equal to a third variable. idk, just thought i'd freshen up the problem types a bit ![]() Yeah, I live in TX - calculus is def not a req for high school. At the uni I attend, calculus is required for a lot of majors - definitely all science majors - and even business, accounting, economics, psych etc. The core requirements do require ALL majors to take a math class, but I don't know if it's calculus that's required. Die Zicke might be able to give you more insight on that if I can't - she attended the uni i'm at right now. LOL well, babycakes likes to attempt them sometimes. jyhu has attempted them a couple times as well, and xyz joined in (which surprised me!). But yeah, it is mostly you that does them it's okrr, hog away! I think it's sweet that you don't want them to go unanswered; makes me look not-pathetic ![]() |

I like brainteasers that involve logic more than maths. Maths is logical, but it's not logic, so. Since you've been posting maths problems lately, I'm not that interested. |

Logic is considered an area within the realm of mathematics - it does have an overlap in philosophy though, since a lot of the foundations of mathematics arose through philosophy. I think math in that way is essentially logic, but logic doesn't always use math. Kind of like how "a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't a square" sort of thing. |

But not everyone who is good at maths is good at thinking logically, so while logic might be formally an aspect of the subject, that doesn't necessitate being able to follow a logical argument. @Pod

Maybe not linguistically, no. But that's not what I was talking about. You said logic isn't math, and I said it was; to be good at math you have to be able to think logically based on the inherent logical nature of mathematics. |

Logic isn't maths, just like maths isn't logic. It has a mathematical aspect to it, sure, but that's just formal logic - informal logic exists as well. |

Right, logic isn't math. But math is logic; logic serves as a set of rules that govern the structure and presentation of mathematical proofs which is the backbone of mathematical reasoning. It doesn't always have to be formal though. Dug this paper up from 2008, you can read it and come to your own conclusions. http://arxiv.org/pdf/math/0306298v1.pdf EDIT: I think I mixed up my words from a previous post. Maybe. I don't think logic is math because most logic doesn't really take into account mathematical reasoning (Zeno's paradox for example) but I do think math is logic. |

I don't think anything warrants it. You should always attempt to be the better party, and to understand the other person's point, so I was wrong not to do that with the full respect the conversation deserved. |
