You mean like more computational type questions similar to the calculus question I posed last time? sure, I guess. But I thought the general consensus here was to do more number theory questions that require induction proofs - the kind of question that you think of when someone says "brain teaser" :P

I prefer brain teasers that can be solved logically rather than mathematically (because it's been a while since my brain was trained to think in a mathematical way) but if I had to select from your list it'd be Combinatorics and Probability and Statistics. I preferred Alegbra/Calculus in high school though.. This is making me want to relearn all this math stuff..

Although post whatever you like since I'll likely be too busy this weekend to attempt a teaser.

@Arti sounds great! What is the difference between college and university over there btw?

^ I have several books full of brain teasers, and very few of them are the kind of questions you've been posting. Maybe we all have different expectations.
Here's a brain teaser....

How long will it take before I go completely insane in law school. Place your bets now!
If you don't go mad before merchant law then that will get you.

Every judge or member I talked to said it was absolute agony (although this is a different country)

Oh, sorry. when you said "doesn't involve a lot of proof" I thought that implied you meant "straight up calculation". Ok, i'll try to find some of those problems for next time. I believe i've posted several probability questions before, though. Tbh, most math problems can't be solved with just logic alone; it's really hard to find questions that only explain things with words and don't use the formal notations of sets or sequences or stuff. Can't give a specific example right now cause i'm about to get kicked out of the library (they're about to close - it's 9pm lol). Calculus is a very fun subject, now that I discovered the beauty of analysis! When I learned calc in high school, I thought it was very cut and dry (but that might also be because of the way math is taught here, which is a completely different topic and I don't have time to go off on a tangent...oh hey, a pun! )

ok i'm getting yelled at by the librarian now soooo bye :bye:

@orange haha nice pun! needless to say i'm v. rusty when i comes to math, probability and combinations is what i've seen more recently in my non-math degree (though it generally involves a computer doing all the calculations for us :ermm: ), which is why i've been attempting those kinds of qns even though i wasn't planning on participating at all when you announced your intention to post them. it will probably interest me to see other kinds of qns and the solutions ppl come up with even if i won't be able to solve them.

@Arti thanks, we call high schools "secondary colleges" here so i was curious. colleges sound like an alternative to universities in the states and idk much about that either.

@Rex why you got to go and remind me of who is leading the party i'm going to vote for in september? :'( this gives me so many sads. malcolm bb come back

Yeah, that kind of stuff confuses me. We have nursery (1~4, usually), primary school (5~10), secondary school (11~15) and then college, which is 16~18.

who's the candidate from the greens?

I have a residency and I been out of australia for a year (actually planning to stay out even longer), judging by how immigration's rules and regulations keep on changing for the past 3 years and by my prediction if Abbott won (considering how he 'loves' us immigrants), sadly, Idt I would be able to go back :ermm:

Ours is pretty simple, I think: kindergarten at 4, primary school (5-12), high school/secondary college (13-18), then on to university, technical schools or work (or chronic un(der)employment as the case may be.

@Yuwree The Greens' prospects of winning the upcoming election (even if they were somehow eligible for a majority)

@Rexie But if you've been accepted on a working visa in the past and speak/write English as well as you do, you'd have no problem getting back in bb. It's people coming on boats with little to no English/relevant work skills that both sides of politics really take issue with.

Im a resident haha, it's actually more complicated than that. I have a friend who's been waiting for her residence for 4 years now (and she applied only 6 months later than me), and I have some friends whom I went to uni with, had to actually go back for good just because the regulation changed (they were capable to apply for residency according to the previous regulations, it got stricter compared to when I applied). It changed all the time really and it's possible for them to change/form a stricter regulation for the residence. I need to re-check with the Australian embassy actually, just to make sure. The government is controlling the amount of people in and out of the country, so everything is possible -_-

Australias immigration laws are all over the place. My Korean friend who already has a bachelors degree has to now do a Bachelors in Nursing just so she can qualify to be a skilled worker to get permenant residency. She'll never actually work as a nurse, she just needs the degree to apply =\

@Yuwree stories like that are far more common than you think, people would do pretty much anything just to score a PR. I'm a lucky bitch i must say hahahaha, it took me almost 3 years tho just to get it =_=

as far as I know, not anymore. It was still do-able until mid 08 I think, just need to make a deposit of AUS$100k for a year, you get your PR and get the moolah return back to you by the end of the said year period. They dont accept the family sponsorship anymore and they even increased the IELTS test mark higher lately. You have to live there at least 2 years just to be able to apply and you have to take an IELTS test, it doesnt matter even if you graduated from an Australian university, IELTS test is a must for everyone

oh and age matters too, you'll get higher points if you're in a certain age category. It's weird indeed :-/

In a sense, I can understand why they would get graduates to sit the test. I've encountered some international students whom I doubt would score well on an English test unless their written language is vastly, vastly better than their spoken. I've done a law unit where we were all required to sit a brief in-class language test to see if we'd be capable of completing the unit. I suspect the tutors are lenient with grammar and such for int. students. It's a little shady to me but education is one of our major exports so it makes sense to make some concessions. Not that I'm saying they're all entitled because most do work extremely hard from what I can tell.

We have an aging labour force, so it's probably an advantage to you to be a young professional? Here I go again with my speculation.

edit: Yulbb can get PR the easy way, by marrying a citizen. ivolunteer.gif
