Apparently it's much easier for the wealthy to get visa's /PR's =\
as far as I know, not anymore. It was still do-able until mid 08 I think, just need to make a deposit of AUS$100k for a year, you get your PR and get the moolah return back to you by the end of the said year period. They dont accept the family sponsorship anymore and they even increased the IELTS test mark higher lately. You have to live there at least 2 years just to be able to apply and you have to take an IELTS test, it doesnt matter even if you graduated from an Australian university, IELTS test is a must for everyone

oh and age matters too, you'll get higher points if you're in a certain age category. It's weird indeed :-/
In a sense, I can understand why they would get graduates to sit the test. I've encountered some international students whom I doubt would score well on an English test unless their written language is vastly, vastly better than their spoken. I've done a law unit where we were all required to sit a brief in-class language test to see if we'd be capable of completing the unit. I suspect the tutors are lenient with grammar and such for int. students. It's a little shady to me but education is one of our major exports so it makes sense to make some concessions. Not that I'm saying they're all entitled because most do work extremely hard from what I can tell.

We have an aging labour force, so it's probably an advantage to you to be a young professional? Here I go again with my speculation.

edit: Yulbb can get PR the easy way, by marrying a citizen. ivolunteer.gif
One thing that has me entirely disgruntled at AUSPOL is almost increases to university or research funding declared by anybody >.>

It's hardly surprising, I'd actually be more surprised if they don't decide to make further cuts to buffer the budget. They're obviously expecting industry and international investors to pay for our tertiary education. -_-

yeah I get that but from what I heard (hope im wrong), they will increased the bar to 8, and that's not for the average, you have to score at least an 8 for every single category (reading, writing, speaking and listening). It's very very hard to score an all 8, If that was the bar when I applied, I'd only pass for speaking and reading haha. It's getting harder to study there too, so not everyone who want to study in Australia could actually get the visa easily (because they see you as a potential immigrant, not to mention the increased of the ridiculous tuition fee as well).

the age category is pretty weird too (cant remember the deets, but more or less, it goes like this) if you're from 18-25 you get different points, over 25 but under 30 get different points and if you're over 30, you might as well dont apply. Even if you're 31, you're over 30 meaning you're less productive. Pretty sure they already come up with new regulations nowadays, so what I mentioned above has probably changed as well.

Even if you marry a citizen, you have to provide proofs that you're actually have been together with your partner for over 2 years. They wanna know if you two live together, have joined bank accounts, even as ridiculous as asking for many pictures and plane holiday tickets if there are any (just to see if you two are actually doing stuff together), since many have faked marriage for PR

I heard many stories from fellow immigrants haha, and during those 3 year wait, I was updated with this stuff. So yeah, Australia defs try to put on hold of the amount of people coming in

Sounds tough.. haha I sort of know about the marriage dealie because a friend of a close friend of mine was willing to offer any of her girlfriends (incl. myself) $60k to marry him so he could get PR and none of us were game. It's definitely pretty tough to pull one over them now that they're looking for anything that'll give you away. I knew a chick who tried this (but she wasn't v. smart about it) and her "husband" got asked how many tatts she had and he had not a clue. The poor bugger paid her like 80k, which was obviously non-refundable. Of course, I would intend to get to know yulbb very well. But still no marriage equality, which is starting to get downright embarrassing at this stage. :-/

I actually think this is partially why it's taken the movement so long to really pick up. People are pretty comfortable as is and they have almost equal rights already so it's predominantly just about getting formally acknowledged.

Yes, I hope you make it back soon for some Melbourne coffee :wine:

ahhahah I definitely am not a coffee connoisseur, I just go with whatever pleased my taste buds ahhahha

you could check out them places I mentioned above, but since you go to RMIT, Sensory Lab and The European are the closest to you. Both are in the CBD, SL is just outside of Myers/DJ (cant remember) and The European (it's actually a fine dining restaurant, but I like the coffee there), is on Spring st. Or if you wanna go somewhere a bit far, go to St Ali in South Melbourne (you can catch a tram from somewhere near Southern Cross st I think), I really like the setting of this place. Also, I heard Proud Mary is very good with coffee, never been there tho and it's in collingwood

edit: @BC it was an example of the suit he wore, something similar to that and not an actual pic of Dip

Loved this in American Horror Story! It was so random and had the song in my head for weeks after that.

I loved it too haha :) It took me ages to actually understand why it happened

And Sarah's cute smile throughout it

Oh I can't actually see it? I see some goblin type creature in a purple wonka get up

:blinkwide: Kid, what have you been drinking the entire few months you've been down here? Gin? There's like two cafes on every street corner, it's virtually inescapable. But, like Rexie, I'm no coffee snob.

I do like the coffee at The European as well :) close to Parliament iirc. Manchester Press is also decent and central, I'm sure you've heard of their bagels (I've yet to find a non-awkward way to eat them). My barista friend likes Seven Seeds in Carlton.

No, I'm being completely serious. It's not a matter of any importance though.

edit:  I can't get over how the dodginess of the venue is directly proportionate to how much they're willing to charge you to dine there in these suburbs. And how the number of days a hipster goes without showering is indicative of the number of available showers in their residence.
