I ended up finding a few eBook torrent sites that had a couple of my textbooks on them. Got a copy of each on my kindle and got another copy printed and bound at office works for like $30. Textbooks are a really horrible industry and apparently there's a lot of lecturers who 'insist that you buy their version because its better' |

Don't play XIII. Just... Just don't. I can't get those fucking hours of my life back. The only one I liked was Lightning, and that's because she punched everyone else and I approved of them getting punched. also i find kuuderes adorable sigh Yeah, textbooks suck ass. It's basically lecturers saying "buy our published books because they are ~necessary~. nah blad nah |

This is when you want to befriend a lot of upperclassmen in your major: they'll more than likely have textbooks that they can lend you for a semester. Unless it's something you'll actually want to keep in your collection, it's best to rent/borrow. |

That is unfortunate You can apply for special consideration if you have personal/medical issues during that time with the universities here, you just have to write a statement explaining how it negatively impacted your performance. And it actually does help, a friend of mine got accepted even though she didn't have the required score.Spoiler: click to toggle tl;dr You're only expected to be good at things you're good at/like, which is great because I sucked hard at drama. |

Yes, I love having books! Just not a fan of dishing out >$100 for one textbook. The only textbooks i've bought are a $40 astronomy textbook and a $180 calculus textbook - but that calculus textbook is an essential and is so fantastically written and that's why it's the standard (it's Stewart 7th ed. if you're wondering). The others, i've either borrowed or torrented a pdf file of; they're all books that aren't written as well as they could be, and I already have a few books on the subjects (Dover publications ftw!) but the university requires those books for whatever reason. Usually because we work problems out of it and turn them in for a grade. I'd rather not spend the money if I don't need to. |

One of my research design lecturers is actually showing us how to get away with using an older edition of the textbook (that we can buy really cheap from upperclassmen). I have a lot of love for her. |

ahh interesting; so you can actually select the subjects and build the curriculum. it's like a strategy game thank you for the link, btw somehow I feel like the process of building your curriculum already works as a vocational test.. kind of. you select what you want and then you have results showing what are your best points. does it count if you go to this or that school, or are all of them considered the same?unfortunately you can't excuse yourself because of those reasons I mentioned, here (not knowing enough about a subject you'll never really use, even if you took classes from a public school, or having add.. dyslexia, sight problems etc have other solutions); if you don't treat your problems, then that's your bad ._. I admire that you have such mechanism there and that it actually works; if we had it here everyone would try to use it even if they were actually fine >_< people here have this little problem with honesty /o\ |

then I agree with you also, you can always borrow from the library \o/ what students do here for books that they will use only one semester is either finding a pdf, like you do, or... photocopying (is this the word?) them. but I have a problem with books that interest me. I have to have them and I get kind of obsessed about them, if I like them too much. I guess I'm the kind of person who won't buy new shoes even if I have money, but will buy new books even if I don't have :///

Ah yes the library! Unfortunately, you can't always find the latest editions of the text you need. Sometimes that's not a problem if it's just for reading (the editions rarely change actual text) but the problems/exercises will usually be updated: more added, different numbers etc which makes it difficult if your prof assigns problems from the book. Also, our uni library system can have the textbooks you need, but they'll be "in reserve" meaning you can only check it out for ~2 hrs and you can't leave the library with it; it's not meant for long period checkouts. |

The main problem I find is that there's usually so many classes over so many levels with the 'required textbook' changing either every semester or 2. The university libraries usually only buy one or maybe two of each textbook because its all they can afford. |

In a sense, it is like a strategy game because your score in some subjects will get scaled up or down according to their perceived difficulty. Some people don’t take psychology even though it’s pretty easy because if you score 39, it’ll get scaled down to perhaps 37 whereas a 32 in Japanese gets scaled up to 37, etc. I didn't play the game though.. I probably should've done more math. All high schools are not created equal, this is where the system is lacking. You receive a superior education at private schools but most can’t afford this without scholarship. I’ve found that it’s not too bad as long as you do some private study but your choice of school does affect the range subjects you have to select from in senior year. E.g. my geography example, but each school offers two foreign languages of their choice and the programs at mine were very poor. But I wasn’t going to move schools in final year to study geography and Italian. Also no ancient history and business management while I was there. anon I studied commercial law a bit and I'd recommend it. It's interesting and doesn't require too much emotional investment. It usually involves learning about tax law though and idk about that edit: criminal is more interesting but much more complicated (you'd have to have a personal interest I suppose) edit: GG But what if you had personal problems e.g. death of family member, cancer, rape. No sympathy? |
