DA I love you anon, it's the first I encountered someone who saw the cherry orchard or at least have an interest in watching it ohh fuck I remembered I had the cherry orchard (1990) on my previous lap, too bad I couldn't recover it. gotta download it again! imo it's not too similar, I prefer the 1990 version, it's more meaningful with lots of simbolism and it's more touching. I totally loved sugiyama

Popularity aside. G.E.M. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZyVxUmguNM Vs. Ailee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG7niC8FmWM&feature=endscreen&NR=1 Overall vocal skill. Who wins? |

I'm glad at least one person thinks so, because some ignorant turd on Youtube attributed SNSD's mic/sound system issues at HKAMF to the "fact" that all HK singers lipsynch (and therefore they don't bother with quality sound systems). |

SA Okay, that was a fail debate. I think they're comparable skill-wise, but it's hard to tell from these two performances. One version is very affected and a bit over-the-top, while the other is a little bit perfunctory and sitting down banging on a piano. G.E.M. is the more experienced battle-weary one; Ailee is more energetic. They're pretty evenly matched, I'd say. |

The way I try to do this is by imagining them singing each other's most difficult songs. Imagine GEM singing "I will show you". Now imagine Ailee singing "AINY". Which one will have a harder time? |

Lol, she had this semi-meltdown one time when people were heckling her in the comments section. Something to do with an award she didn't win and her feud with Kary Ho from Cookies fame, I believe. But yeah, she's a monster talent. Her decision not to enter EEG has really hampered her career, but she's a fighter. |

i guess you're right. i really can't imagine ailee covering a.i.n.y. but it might just be their style versatility? idk, i don't listen to ailee enough to know for sure. |

I don't follow the gossip either, but I happen to follow her on YT and she like, actually responded to a comment from her heckler. Anyway, yeah, she's sort of an angry kid, or at least that's my perception. |

Okay, next topic: I mean, I don't know if it's just me, but more and more, it seems like "being able to sing like a black singer" is becoming synonymous to "being a good singer". I don't know if that's racist, but I hope you know what I mean, like, being able to sing that particular style. I mean back in the nineties in HK (before the popularization of Western Hip Hop/R&B culture in Asia) Faye Wong was considered one of the best female singers in HK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXYI84o_xqI And Sammi Cheng sounds nothing like a black person. All she could do was dance and sing reasonably well simultaneously; she was set for life. I'm not an expert, but I suspect most Asian singers aren't born with the same vocal structure as black people, and it becomes like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Even the ones that do manage it are doing so at the risk of the health of their voices/longevity of their careers. I'm not going to deny that Alicia Keys is a talented singer. She's very skilled, but you can be still very skilled even if you're not of that same style. Aren't we sort of limiting musical diversity and ultimately putting artists in very difficult Catch-22 positions, by choosing to define vocal skill narrowly? |

are you referring to the korean entertainment? there's definitely a prototype that fits the bill of what it means to be a 'good' singer. i think this goes for western entertainment as well. amy w1nehouse and adel3 are highly regarded as good singers and their genre is soul...which has african american roots. actually all pop/rock music has african american roots. everything pop related basically goes back to the blues. |

I'm talking about Asia in general. Doesn't "Pop" just stand for popular music? I thought it just meant any music that is considered mainstream at the moment. |

Whether he will be found guilty or not, his career is kinda doomed now. Having the word "rapist" tagged to your name is not a good thing to anyone. |

umm alot of genres in pop stem from the blues. i'd argue that rock (and pop which stems from rock) and folk originates from the blues |

Come to think of it, I didn't even mention "Pop" in my original post. My question was whether you think the status quo is "good", whatever "good" means to you. |

sorry i'm confusing myself. nvm. idk where i was going with the discussion uhh to a degree yes i do think it is 'good', but there are many vocal stylings which could be considered 'good' that don't fit the ideal prototype singer of what the Asian music market seems to want. so ia with your original point that it restricts musical diversity. |
