Where do writers prefer to post?
And as readers, which places are easiest to use?

Spoiler: click to toggle
If i had to choose as a reader i would say aff yes it has some bad fics but it's easier to search for fics there using tags which i assume can help new writers get their fics out there
You don't have to be a big name fic writer to get people to read your stuffs

For reading, AFF all the way.
Tags, title page + chapter list format, messaging/comments system, notifications, mobile version, and offline saving all make reading fics from their site really nice.
I love authors that crosspost their SSF fics onto AFF for this reason (ch3rry for example)

For finding fics though, AFF is indeed terrible. Don't really go there unless someone recommends a fic in this thread, but really all I have to do is read the first few sentences of a fic and I can tell by the grammar/style if the fic is any good.

^SA Also forgot to mention not only does AFF have the standard subscription system, but also has bookmarks and and a label system (lets you make and label fics whatever you want). Don't really follow enough fics to make use of it, but if I did, it would make categorizing/organizing everything really simple and easy.

I don't know AFF has a system like that. Very nice feature.
I really don't like to wade through so many fics there though. I got there for the first time when I was into Soshi, and it traumatized me for life.

da When I got into Yulsic and was doing some research about them..lol I came across some ff on AFF (I have never read a fucking fics in my entire life) I read it. Traumatized!!.
Then happyplace got me started. They really do have good fics but you have to dig way back and some of the good fics are incomplete :(

But Yeh AFF really have good formate. Just don't ever be award. Most popular fic =/= good fic. Too many terrible fics and once in a while you will come across some traumatized sick fics.. personal experience.

Soshi is not my gateway to fanficdom (M4i-H1me is), but damn AFF is bad place to start.
Finding fics there is nightmare.

Happyplace format is not really good for reading experience, though. Too many user comments lagging the page (I have shitty connection) and it can get confusing between the comments and the story. -_-

For me, LJ is the best place to read fics. AFF is only useful for its subscription feature (to both stories and authors).

I really hate reading stories on the happy place forum. Unless it's available on another site or as a PDF, I don't read it.

For the authors here, how or where do you get inspiration to write?
hard to answer... for me, (this may sound weird) if i have a story to tell, i try writing it. like, a certain message or feeling i want to communicate to others, or a situation like 'imagine if this and this happened' or 'what if these people were in this situation' and then ideas kind of grow. those kinds of things like feelings or messages or situations are just things i notice in daily life or float into my head and enter my thought processes. then also, to get myself to actually write stuff down, i sometimes read a lot just to kind of get my head in the right area for streams of written word and start typing away whatever comes out, to be vigorously edited into a better story when i take a break.

well that kind of made sense in my head. :P

For me as a reader, LJ is my favorite place to read fics. yeah, AFF is a lot easier to navigate, but I find the authors on LJ more personable and their stories are usually of a higher caliber than AFF. I've NEVER been met with a rude response to a comment or a whiny "give me 4353254 comments or else I'll never update!11!" mentality like I have with AFF and sushified. On LJ, the authors are all very polite and appreciative of readers

RE: fic posting/reading platforms--
My favourite's AO3. Very reader-friendly. Apparently rather writer-friendly too, though I haven't tried it yet. The only downside is that it's in beta, so you need an invite to create an account (for writers). Not many SoShi writers post there though.

i think she's working on something for the 1727...
but i'm not sure where i got that impression from ^o)
but she probably is, the thread is moving so slow tons of authors are pitching in cos there's more time
