Just wondering, why all the hate towards @uratus? Personally, I like his writing style, and although the plots can sometimes be rather...convoluted, I think they're decent. Or is it his attitude?

Btw, I'm not @uratus or one of his more well-known commenters, I'm just curious.
attention whore, biggest ego on SSF, thinks using thesaurus.com makes you the god of writers, one of the loudest supporters of "protect the girls" which is typical for attention whore that he is, openly insulting anybody with different opinions, and did I mention aw I guess I did
lol his section of reviewers that praised his work in each of his stories. like chill dude, your fanfic got lots of comments, no need to get an ego.
fyi he actually requests his readers for those reviews on the front page of his threads.
he tells them that he's compiling it for that review section and asks them to post what they think of his fic.

For me, it's his writing style, haha. His misguided grasp of grammar and his inability to vary his clause structure, sentence structure and language choice make it incredibly difficult for me to read whatever it is he's writing. His premises seem somewhat interesting, but I can't comment on the content any further than that.

You should write something, Arti, since you seem to know so much about grammar. Don't go easy on us k, go totally Nazi on the technical side of things, clause structure, sentence structure and language choice like you mentioned, and maybe the anons and writers here will learn a thing or two ;)

Knowing about it and applying it are two different things. idk if I could write without it feeling mechanical or forced.

Has it ever occurred to you that there could maybe be different ways of application? But then again, you said it yourself, you don't know how to write something without it feeling mechanical or forced, which to me, comes off as text-book. That's what you meant by misguided grammar, right? The technical, text-book side of things.

I personally am curious what kind of writer you are.

Of course I know there are, my mom is an experimental post-modernist writer that enjoys challenging the boundaries of expectation in literature and playing with functions of language, such as punctuation.
What you must consider is, unless you write like my mom, you should be able to notice and tell what the aim of your style is, and thus, even within alternative styles, there will be correct and incorrect applications that people generally would agree on. You can take liberties with grammar, but those liberties are still within a set paradigm.

I know how to write and I feel as if I could do it decently, but I feel like what I enjoy writing in fiction is not necessarily what others would like to read. Maybe if I were to be given a prompt and the parameters you'd prefer me to work within, I could try for you, but... idk.

LMFAO I didn't even notice that.
I certainly didn't mean to imply that my mom was an inanimate writing robot, or something. She's definitely a person... as far as I know. =_=

And I dunno, I like writing conventional stuff that's very character-based. I don't tend to play with expectation or established norms, I like to use them to attempt to explore a character or a situation to communicate feelings as I understand them. Occasionally, I like to break rules and use second-person pronouns if I feel like it, but... Meh.
The last thing I wrote seriously was fanfiction in '08, which must've been like... 5 years ago, when I was 12. And it's so awkward.

Second person pronouns? Interesting, since we definitely don't have much of that. I've only read one second-person oneshot before.

You used to run the polls, right? How about a fanfic poll :gaypimp:

Arti,

Hey! :P So do you mean that you only write for critique in an academic setting or for fic as well? For me, I'm a stickler for grammar in "the real world." However, for fanfic, I'm way more chill about it because that's not the point of the writing. Oh yeah, I've read fic so awful mechanically that I had to stop. Yet, maybe I wasn't their audience. I'm guilty of erm--indulging in smut where the syntax was off at alarming rates. Yet, the point was getting that smexy feeling. And it works!

So yeah, I guess I push more for something "working." And consistency. That's important.

I'm also very interested in your writing style.

I'm probably only one of a few that likes @uratus's stuff. I see what you all mean by the thesaurus and his general style of writing lol I think I've read so much of his stuff that I unconsciously correct and replace words automatically :P but there's hardly any other good writers of the action/sci-fi/thriller/AU genre in this fandom (well those that are consistent in updates) so you know I'll take what I can get, don't care much for his attitude, but I'll take soshi!action with well detailed plots any day.

I like his stuff too - though tbh I've only read one of his stories. Agree with you; his attitude and actions really need to, well, improve, but his writing is for sure good. I personally don't see a problem with the thesaurus-overuse. I know that you all mean when you say that, and that is one of my personal pet peeves. But iirc @uratus used his words well. They might've been slightly bigger words than usual, but I felt like it was acceptable and fitting, even, most of the time. And his plots...wow. I just about died while reading.

OP Ikr, I sometimes have to backtrack to look for clues to the puzzle of a plot and then he just throws in a plot twist (Like the ending of SHoCh's first arc) I can understand why some fans won't like his interpretations on the girls because jeeesus his characterizations are far from the girls we know and I personally love that (British!soshi anyone?)

Both, really. I write for fun, but part of the fun, for me, is being good at it; being good involves accepting and evolving through critique.

I'd argue that a working, consistent style is a good one. I dunno. You don't have to be 100% grammatically correct to write a good story, you just need to immerse your reader and convey what you want to convey. Part of that, for me, is in grammar, but I'm willing to accept stunted sentences and/or incorrect clauses if the style overall flows well and the intent is clearly communicated.

If that makes sense.

I don't know. I'LL MAKE ONE IRRESPECTIVE OF THAT.

POLLS, MAN

POLLS

ON @URATUS
@uratus, in my opinion, is a terrifyingly bad writer because every single thing about his style is incorrect, from his word usage to his syntax to the complete lack of understanding/respect for what sentences are. It just. Everything about his writing style is so preschool, like... I don't know how to describe it.

It's like he knows technique, but he doesn't understand it, he can't apply it.
He sounds like a child repeating back what a teacher told him without actually ever knowing what makes things work. I can't abide by it, at all. It frustrates me.

His freaking plot twists. My goodness, I spazzed at my friend who wasn't reading it and I think they thought I went nuts. SHoCH's plotline: werewolves who...okay, I can't even summarize right now. I loved, loved, loved that they were British, though honestly, their image as SNSD was too ingrained for me to really read them as they were depicted in SHoCH. And I agree, the characterizations are not who they are in real life - it was AU, completely.

I only read till arc 1 though. The sudden stop at arc 2, chapter, what? 41? That threw me off, and I stopped reading from then on. I actually also read HoM, up to...well, near where he has it now, but I also stopped there because the updates were farther apart and it was getting a little confusing to read, bit by bit. I heard one of his fics is completed?

Criticizing one writing style is something, but why making them personal? He`s just some guy who write about ot9 and he writes good..Some people might have godded him because of his talent, and I think the reasons are legit based on his writing and the way he portrayed the girls...And personally, I like his style. Its different from all the fluff out there.. but hey, thats just me.

If you peg his writing ability as preschool, then 99% of the other writers must be sucking thumbs.

Ah, I've read it! You're right, it's actually Taeny with some Taengsic and Soosic. It's a pretty good story, I like it a lot. Admittedly, it's in its 19th chapter and Taeny is still really awkward, but somehow that doesn't really detract from the story. Pretty well-written, too.

OP SHoCH was a pretty horny fic if I do say so myself though I did side-eye the whole Jekyll and Hyde concept for Fany...yea lets not get into the whole plot because pheww.
Spoiler: click to toggle

I am half way through the second arc but stopped and read his other works (it took me a damn while to get through all his other stuff) What d'ya think of HoM? I was obsessed about it for a while lol with the whole 'everyone is not who you think they are' secret agent concept. But it's taken him quite a long time to update this, I think he's working on collabs with other writers (Why the hell would anyone want to play fanfic ping pong with @uratus beats me  ).

Yea he's finished Soshi Xmas carol but the second part to that is... ongoing...I think. I'd give that a shot if you're into character development and SooTae has an adorable friendship in this.
