Every time I read one of boxx's fanfics, it completely blows me away. She's a really versatile writer and this Yulti fic really showcases it. If boxxsaltz is reading this, then
Boxx NEVER fails to please.

Thank you, so much for linking this. I love it. This is amazingly unique and beautifully written. From a psychological point of view (its my major) its not completely accurate, but its good enough and the justification isn't too bad either. I can live with it anyway and the story... wow. Wonderful!

Despite it's longevity starting to drag out, I really like Landscaping the Heart and would say its the best 'lengthy' fic that i've read.

For best fic overall tho... I don't think I could comment one. A Soshi love Story by Auratus would be my favorite, although (this sounds really douchey) i'd prefer a different main pairing.

Forever loling at the use of physics to justify a slow bullet but 5ever loling at the use of relativistic physics because the first thing you learn is that scalar/vector quantities are perceived differently based on your reference frame. Considering everyone is a separate reference frame, it's silly to think that the idea of a slow bullet is intuitive to anyone other than the one perceiving it as such (in this case, the writer).

just...I can't :rofl:
It's Auratus again.

The physics of sound waves propagating through air when disturbed by a supersonic object IS the point. A silenced pistol requires the use of a SLOW, subsonic bullet, otherwise the shot is easily detected. A small diameter bullet is also indicated for stealth purposes. Which brings up the mass times velocity thing since terminal performance requires an energy dump into the target and a 60gn projectile moving at 980fps will only instantly kill with a brain shot.

That opening paragraph to HoM was intended to set the tone for the story. I wanted to write a fic that got guns and military hardware as right as I could, ergo the usage of 'jargon' and 'details' that one wouldn't normally expect to find in fanfic. There're a lot of such details scattered throughout that fic. Guns aren't magic and the projectiles they shoot are subject to Newtonian physics, where every shot is a ballistic arc. This is counter-intuitive to someone raised on a steady diet of TV, comics and popular media, where a silencer is somehow magic and guns never run out of bullets and a pistol is as deadly as a rifle. Snipers are another poorly misunderstood subject.

But... ASLS is a sequel to ASCC, so I'd consider them one story (but 2 fics?) So. ASLS doesn't really standalone. Carry on. - Auratus

Main pairing was/is taengsic.

As I said i'm just a very stubborn person, in all honestly I rarely read fanficiton unless Yuri is in the main (or secondary atleast) pairing.

I also tend to find alot of TaeNy fanfiction is very... cut and paste? Taeyeon is either really awkward and unintentionally romantic or is the most perverted person ever whereas Tiffany is either a young lady (bonus points if she's dating jerk S1w0n) or she's an innocent soft spoken christian girl. I know this happens alot with Yulsic (Ice princess, Kwon Seobang etc). I guess it all comes down to preference.

And i've never really had taengsic 'work' for me in fanfiction outside of 'A Soshi Love Story' and Riklai 13's 'Family/Life' series.

The one where Yuri offers her vag and Jessica dives in. It's so different from the normal Jessica is an ice cold bitch trajectory that I love it.

I think I've counted 4.

@Auratus If you want to add "technical jargon" for the sake of a realistic fic, you'd be better off ingratiating it into your narrative, so it doesn't stick out as pointless information. Readers, or at least myself, appreciate coming across new things and appropriate realism wherever possible in fiction, but if it just seems like you've unceremoniously dumped in technical terms for no other reason other than having technical terms in there, it throws off the whole immersion thing.

Like, I changed it here: "[...]the weapons used to topple them: water-suppressed Ruger Mark II Amphibians, chosen for their specialty in stealth and subterfuge."
There, you're adding detail without it feeling too odd; you've mentioned what weapon it is being used in a way that fits with the narrative, then you've gone on to explain why they've been used - because they fit the task at hand, which is then simultaneously some more scene-setting where it highlights the fact that this is a covert operation. It's already been stated, sure, but it's nice to keep to a theme and try and choose wording that reinforces it wherever possible.

You could do the same for the bullets. Perhaps zone in on a single rifleman and note him reloading, and then explain why that specific calibre and why those specific bullets were being used, while also being able to drop your "jargon" in there.

Make the information fit the text, or don't put it in at all - you're writing a story, not counting military inventory.

Okay, rewritten again, more verbiage, more imagery.

I get what you're saying, but writing with colons gives the opening a different sort of feel. Clinical. Which might be the same issue with jargon to a new reader. Both can be off-putting. And yes, writing a story is the priority.

~~~
Death came for the man inside the house, in multiple shapes, all darkly dressed, whispering with foreign accents. The group of assassins closest to the house stirred first, Mediterranean complexions further darkened with paint, gloved hands holding long-barreled Ruger Mark II Amphibian pistols, integrally suppressed and loaded with subsonic munitions. Their immediate prey were the group of guards next to the house. Guards arguing quietly about the weekend's football match, sure in their safety, sure in the knowledge that the perimeter was secure, that their overwatch with night vision scopes and years of quiet were guarantors of another quiet evening.
They never saw the fat barrels rising in the night. Aim was taken, the range too short to miss and the three guards died before they knew it with the simultaneous impact of small bullets into their skulls. The .22 caliber 60-grain projectiles traversed the short distance, heads twitching with the near silent impacts, the sound like nothing more than finger thwacks on ripe melons. The guards crumpled like puppets cut free, the thud of meat on ground louder than the burbling pfffbbts of the water-suppressed Rugers. The guards' unremarked collapse was the signal for other silent assassins, marksmen with heavier caliber suppressed rifles. They took shots at the two guards on the roof line. Still more riflemen hit the two men who walked the back lawn.
I get what you're saying, but writing with colons gives the opening a different sort of feel. Clinical. Which might be the same issue with jargon to a new reader. Both can be off-putting. And yes, writing a story is the priority.
I'm gonna ignore the re-write for a sec, if that's cool? I want to know why you think colons are distracting to the reader, or why you think they interrupt the narrative? I can't say that anybody I know has ever paid more attention to a colon than, say, a comma, and I wouldn't say a comma would be in conflict with readability. My issue with the jargon was that it's unnecessary technobabble and could potentially draw the reader out of the immersion because they'd suddenly be like, "what's a Ruger Amphibian and why is it here?", if you know what I mean. I've never heard the same about a colon.
I suppose you could argue that, since colons are typically used for listing, that this could be a little more factual, thus "clinical", and it could change the overall feel of what you've written... But I think that'd be a stretch, unless you altered the rest of the paragraph to fit that impression, since a colon is literally just a piece of punctuation.
I think the reason the colon feels appropriate to me is because I've used it to integrate your specs for the firearms into the piece, and what you've written is factual/clinical in that you've simply stated items like you're stating military inventory and I wanted to keep that feel in there.
Sorry for spamming this discussion, Anons. It's just that I get enthusiastic about writing, lol... :ermm:
It's all on the 3981 DL Page, anon.
Unfortunately, it's password-protected and I'm scared of linking the direct PDF, rules are rules.
But I'll make the hints easier for you.
For Gilded, password hint: part of your foot, where the bone sort of sticks out. This part can get sprained quite easily. Also called the talocrural region.
For The Last: that place in Nevada with loads of casinos and hotels.
All lowercase, no spacing even if there are two words.
Colons and semi-colons are useful things when writing technically. But when writing prose, which if I'm going to be prosaic about it, SHOULD read as if someone were following along, a finger on the page, mumbling the words, then unless the narrative is in the voice of a character with an analytical bent, overriding inertia and a bewildering mastery of numerous factoids, like say, Sherlock Holmes summarizing whodunit, how and why, semicolons and colons simply don't belong in the narrative. People don't use them conversationally and they interrupt engagement and flow when reading along. Much like jargon, eh?
So you don't think that people should use semi-colons or colons at all in prose? Ever? Even if it would be grammatically prudent to do so, and would flow better?
She's a lot of fun to talk to as well haha. I'm still trying to drag her back to the fandom. Wish me luck!
I saw someone asking how authors found their way here? I knew of the forum because of track backs from BySone but I only visited once someone informed me that I had been mentioned :) I love hanging around in forums but I tend to be a serial lurker. Then again there are some really cool writers in here so I feel like kind of a small fry, and out of place X)
