That's why I didn't like it that much, too chaste for my taste ![]() If I should name one - ES, too but there have been others that I really enjoyed |

lol I just read this line;
And now I'm imagining Tiffany making violent lunges at passersby like some kind of escaped mental patient, giggling hysterically. I'm gonna read the next chapter when I've got that thought out of my head. |

I've done that a few times before, actually, and it always ended up with them quitting because "I'm too strict". I figured that I misunderstood the purpose of a beta-reader as being someone that corrects any errors in syntax, when, in actuality, you just thumbs-up everything they write, like some kind of personified ego trip.

If that's all you were doing, you weren't even strict enough. Beta are supposed to give the author hell, not only about conventions or of that sorts, but also criticizing plot, plot holes, characterizations, etc. I think you have the potential to become a great beta, I mean you're already a pain in the arse when criticizing fics anyway... lol half kidding. If one day i suddenly decide to write fic, I'd definitely love to have you as my beta. Your previous authors were stupid to quit you. Not that I'm planning to write, mind you. Implim's works can be found on her livejournal, which is here Edit: or on her Wordpress It feels slightly weird to be giving the links to her fics even though I know she visits the thread. Mea culpa. Edited by Random Snippets, Feb 14 2013, 08:50 AM.

I was doing other things regarding the actual content, too, but they tended to ignore whatever I had to say about that because "it was their story" so it could go "wherever they wanted", so in the end I stuck to just the style in the hopes that they couldn't contradict the fact that English grammar has rules. I just have high standards and I'm always willing to beta if people ask, so. |

Any tips you can dispense? Or basic guidelines for budding writers? Like, oneshots are more suitable for prose and ongoings are for plot etc. |

Depends on what you want to write, rather than stringent rules regarding "should" or "should nots", to be honest. As long as there are no contradictions or Crimes of Grammar, what you do is down to personal preference - even a style that comes into direct conflict with the themes in your story can still be executed very well if you have the right balance. It all comes down to how often you write and practice, with maybe your innate knack for grasping storytelling giving you a kick along the way. I'd say oneshots are definitely more suited to prose, but there are ways that you can make ongoings work with it as well. You should mainly use prose for "setting the scene", where you want to introduce a certain effect by describing the environment or the surroundings. It can also be used to introduce new characters, but you have to do that carefully so it doesn't interrupt the narrative, and FOR THE LOVE OF THE LORD, never use things like, "orbs" or "gems" to describe eyes unless you're hinting at something plot-related that involves them having actual gems for eyes. It's such a prosaic cliche that it makes me heave. Also, on dialogue tags, "said" is a great one. You should use that liberally, along with "replied", and use other ones sparingly. You should also avoid using a thesaurus too much, and when you do, make sure you understand whether or not the word would be appropriate in that context. The number of times I've seen people say something like, "a single, crystalline substance trailed a lonely path down porcelain mounds, secreted from an alizarin oculus". Just say, "she shed a single tear", or something. Those are just what I prefer, though. I'd have to read through something individually to get a feel for it before, and I don't think I can really make any blanket statements when it comes to things like writing. It's an expression of ideas and your imagination more than anything. |

I once imposed a ban on linking my stuff to the LChat... but nevermind, just as long as you guys don't send trolls to me like last time (it used to make me really anxious to see my stuff linked gawd) @Dyslexia @ Shipcaptain Thanks for anticipating my stuff! I updated recently (the continuation to Lakehouse) but its a bit dry cause I wanted to lay out the issue about religion and stuff, you guys might want to wait instead for the next update. Decided to finally register

@RandomSnippets Its alright, I'm cool with it, since moving to Wordpress my anon readers have been very well-behaved and hellooo to you ^-^ @ShipCaptain, Dyslexia, poppy, Taejawline Hii!! Thank you for the warm welcome, this is such a contrast to the last "welcome" I had at LChat, I remember being interrogated by GuaranaGirl, the "If Tiffany offered you her vadge would you dive in" questions... lol Anyway thanks guys and hi to everyone else here too! Dyslexia, if you have a slow computer processor, do not open
