the west and its history with black people's slavery and cruelty and their fights over hundreds of years for equal rights, it's just baffles me this whole blackface thing
it's the same with awful caricatures of asians white actors did in hollywood in the 30s/40s, and if anything like that is pulled today, shit will go down

I don't understand how they're are living in today's world, with an important part in it because of technology, politics and culture and still do something like this
I don't care if the population is homogenic and they don't have that many people of color around; you're connected to the world so you should know things like these are sensitive

yes I understand

politics is sensitive issue too
so that's why I'm saying they shouldn't include Jasmine Lee case there
It's not going to help at all

But that's kinda the thing, it's the west that has that history. Asia doesn't. It doesn't excuse comedians doing blackface, that's unacceptable, but that's why it doesn't cause a huge outrage there.

It's kind of like how the rising sun flag is viewed in the west. America/Europe doesn't have a history of Japanese colonization, so that flag isn't viewed the same way as it is in east/s.east asia. Even here you see things like that ufc fighter wearing the rising sun flag on his uniform, and it wasn't really until a korean ufc fighter addressed it that any attention was brought to it. To westerners, they understand that the flag is in bad taste, but seeing the outrage over it kind of makes them think 'is it really that big of a deal?'

Just being connected to the rest of the world doesn't automatically make you sensitive to the history/issues of others. I don't expect someone to know the history of my country just because they have internet. At some point a person/group of people have to speak out and raise awareness so others can learn.

oh... so, now, it's all making sense. prematurely blamed the DJ for what was Chr1s Br0wn's doing.

IDC if you like them or not, but mad props to N4 for picking it up and 3unjung for not engaging in a mass murder, even though she looked like she was about to (and I love her even more for it).

I'm sure they would be very offended if I take a picture with tapes on the side of my eyes, trying to mock the slanted eyes
wear a wig with bowl cut hair and holding a riceballs in each hand

you don't do that kind of shit in the world anymore, with any race
it's not a west thing, it's common sense and it applies to any race

I'm not saying it isn't offensive, I'm saying of course it'll cause more outrage and get more publicity in America with a history of slavery and a large black minority but not in country with less than 1% minority and no history of oppression of blacks. It's common sense that people will be more sensitive to issues relating to them.

If you can read, you'll see that I said it doesn't excuse instances of blackface. I don't think you want to understand, you just want to be angry.

People also assume that these things don't happen in the west nowadays either, and I can assure you as a person living here that there are far more instances of the mocking/imitation of asians and blacks here in west compared to other parts of the world. Of course none of these instances (here or abroad) are acceptable, but I don't like it when people think that the west has some superior moral compass.

Everyone in the west is involved when it comes to slavery and opression of black people/africans, not only the US
slavery of black people happened all over the americas during the european colonization era , along with slavery/genocide of native americans (all americas, but especially in the US where they pretty much killed almost all of them)
the history is very deep and sad
I'm sorry if I sounded rude, this subject really bothers me, even though I'm not black, we are taught in school since very early the complete barbaric slavery of africans and their fight to be free

I feel like there's no excuse to stay ignorant nowadays
S.K. has the fastest internet, they are connected to the rest of the world and they can learn plenty about other cultures, especially things as big as racism
I mean, I've never been to the US but I know all about the prejudice and the hate muslim mentality that it's spread there. And the antisemitism in the islamic countries, the palestine genocide that is taking place in the holy land, courtesy of Israel among other things
and my internet sucks

but those are currents events issues, of course anyone would know
blackface and slavery aren't
should i know the culture and history of every country in the world before doing something?
there shouldn't be that expectation
if you see someone doing something wrong or offensive, just correct and teach them

it's kind of odd to have a mentality of 'you have fast internet, you should know this history of another country'

I agree with this. If you have a problem with what someone's doing and you find it offensive, e.g. referring to a Romani traveller as a gypsy, it's on you to explain politely and correct them in the hopes that they might change their behaviour through this new knowledge.

Not everyone is going to know the detailed cultural sensitivities of every group, and you shouldn't expect them to.

You should understand why they don't already know, but you should also educate them as to why it's offensive so that they know for the future and hopefully avoid repeating their mistake.

Koreans really angry about it
'
and some people said they are not asians. so It's understandable that they didn't know what rising sun flag means

and most people said like 'is there no internet in UK?' 'ignorance is sin bye bye forever'

The intention of the letter is good, but the content is condescending and empty.

I don't know how to contact the writer, but to make it more effective they should mention the history of blackface and the history of oppression of black people. All this letter says is: "We're fed up with Korean entertainers and their use of blackface. We like parts of k-entertainment, but you guys have no excuse to be ignorant." It comes off as kind of childish. Giving it historical context will give it more weight and convince more people.
