G'day, CPBA SFG (Sportfishing Group) fished Bluff Creek Beach this last weekend just gone, arrived Friday p.m., fished Sat - Sun, back home Monday, we were just 9 strong, couple pull-outs for whatever work related reasons dropped the numbers back a bit. Herring were pretty thick in some of the gutters and absent from others, berley cranked ém up and kept them interested, from little tackers to thumper bull herring, baits or lures worked fine, often times it was lures more so than bait. Was quite a few big skippy to a kilo about, don't reckon we saw anything under the old 'pound', what's that, 400gm'ísh. Was a few big flathead around, lots of stinking sand crabs, they liked the berley too by the look of it. Salmon were spasmodic for most of the weekend, quite a few small fish from herring size up to a couple kilo, the odd 6-7kg fish but no big numbers. We kept watch on some big pods of fish of some sort that were milling around on the outer break between white water patches, they mooched around all Sunday morning but never made it to shore, could've been salmon, could've been herring or bait, we don't know. The deeper the gutter / hole the better the fish it held. The bigger salmon hit the inshore gutters on Sunday arvo', from 3-4kg up to easy 8kg, lures and bait, mostly in the deeper gutters but there were on the break on the face of the reef tops around the beach a bit to the East and in the really deep sections half-way along, they were actively feeding right in amongst the face of the swells which gave them away - made it easy to spot ém from the beach. Was birds on ém too. Everyone got into fish, most of us in multiple numbers, some only in one's, over the course of the weekend we probably beach 40 or so salmon, 20 of which were the bigger fish that we travel so far to find, the rest were in the 'salmon trout' class, maybe 6 fish were kept, all the rest released. Tides were high at midday and low in the evenings, didn't wet a line for sharks etc, after full days on the beach the BBQ and beer back at the chalets was higher in most peoples plans that chancing a big bait, were the tide higher in the evening it might have been a different story, might not have too. Weather was excellent, breeze over our backs for 98% of the weekend and light, weather was warm - shorts and teeshirts, mostly clear skies. The beach was pretty chopped up come Sunday evening, lots of cars up n down, not that many fishing, which was weird just running around. An excellent weekend on all fronts. Ando |

Jimbo, so, this is 'Ole Buoy' unveiled eh, cheers mate, was a good one for sure. The other crews were a little envious of our bait, no great surprise, those blocks were ridiculous fresh, told ém they should've gone local. There's a crazy plan bouncing around the grey matter that I might be able to sneak down for another weekend before winter sets in, won't be 'til early June'ish but it's gathering momentum, will let you know if anything takes root. A Club mate up here's been doing pretty well out real deep - 475mtrs'ish - last run out (week before we were at Bluff) decked three species - Blue eye, hapuka and bass groper, all stinking fat fish. He's been 'intercepted' a couple of times now by billies, no doubt attracted by the rigs or the catch flashing, one smashing him to the point of removing his electric from the boat, another just decimated his terminal end, gets lots of rigs coming up suffering bill-rash where they've been slashing at it. Still, not too much rec' pressure out in that depth huh. Dunsborough coast is chockers with schools of salmon too, one of those good years maybe. Will let you know if I can sneak down again - haven't broached it with SWMBO as yet, no point ruining the surprise huh. Cheers. Ando |

G'day Korg, I've been watching from the sidelines a fair bit, never had the opportunity to add anything of value, don't get down to the coast anywhere near often enough, s'very hard to get that saltbush and southerly spray out of the blood once it's in!! If you don't tell De Ed' I was there nor will I, he will never know... Jimbo's been regaling me with some of his tales of the deeps, that mighty Southern Ocean has always given me the ebee-jeebees, s'not very forgiving and very short tempered, I recall it must clearly be a 'she' ocean, the mood changes at the drop of a hat. I haven't bumped into Gadget Carnaby online for a while, is he still sniffing around - if he is that there will probably flush him out!! The two weeks prior to going down to Bluff I had a week in Exmouth during GAMEX - 40C to 43C every day, followed that with a week in Derby fishing Barra - 39C - 42C daily, and then rushed off down to Bluff for the few days, talk about putting the system through a climatic-contrast, y'know what, they are all places worth fishing, just take the weather as it comes and get on with it!! Will let you know if another Albany jaunt comes up, we're off up to Coral Bay for a couple weeks in May, some would say that's quite enough fishing activity for one year - those 'some' are mainly the loved ones - clearly they don't understand... I miss the squid in Albany, gonna have to make some time just to go back and annoy those - I recall the end of winter into early spring was a good time, will see if I can work on that too...reckon I'll have some explaining to do!!
