I was dreading the Derby, but after Liverpool's crazy win in the League cup and Everton losing the League Cup game and being beaten by QPR i am sort of building up some hope.

NBC ProSoccerTalk: Rodgers, Martinez meet media ahead of Merseyside Derby
Quote:

This weekend’s slate of Premier League matches kicks off with a doozy: the Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool at Anfield, and the rival managers spoke to their teams issues heading into the match.

Brendan Rodgers (above video) has watched as his Liverpool side fall to Aston Villa and West Ham United in consecutive weeks before a marathon League Cup match against Middlesbrough at midweek, and is hoping to have a decisive win to help his team get back on UEFA Champions League track. He also answered questions on Raheem Sterling‘s freshness after 120 minutes-plus of tournament play.

Meanwhile, Everton boss Roberto Martinez is in a funk he didn’t see coming, either. Last season’s darlings have just five points from as many matches, sitting a point below No. 11 Liverpool. Martinez said, “We are a confident side,” and thinks Everton’s failings have had to do with a lack of focus, concentration and communication. He maintains that the club’s focus is on winning games, not keeping clean sheets.

Liverpool FC: Rodgers - Wonderful Suso In Derby Contention
Quote:

Author:
Melissa Reddy at Melwood

--Suso Fernandez's "wonderful feet" and refusal to be floored by a lack of game time has been saluted by Brendan Rodgers.

The Liverpool manager was impressed by the 20-year-old's Capital One Cup cameo against Middlesbrough, in which he hit a sweet strike and slotted two penalties in a remarkable 14-13 shoot-out win following a 2-2 draw in extra-time.

The Spaniard's attacking intent injected effervescence into the side upon his introduction in the 98th minute. Rodgers savoured Suso's display, which he felt was reward for the starlet's work ethic.

The forward is now in contention to face Everton in Saturday's Merseyside Derby showdown.

"Young Suso was a player that when I first came in, he played quite a bit," the Reds boss said. "He's already experienced the derby in that first season away at Goodison and we've seen his impact from the other night.

"I was really pleased for him, because it's been difficult for him. We sent him out on loan to try and get games and experience.

"He has come in, put his head down over the course of pre-season and worked hard.

"He hasn't had a lot of game time and that's probably been difficult for him, but he's never shown it.

"He has got the same appetite in training. You saw his quality when he came on in the game, when the space opened up and even when it was tight, he had wonderful feet and wonderful technique.

"It was nice to see him score off his right foot and he's definitely one that comes into the reckoning."

Everton are lacking midfield depth right now in how they play, Suso would be an an ideal starter for me to take advantage.

I agree; I'd start Suso behind Balotelli & Sturridge (assuming Sturridge is fit for Saturday).
In fact, I'd go w/the following lineup on that one...
-GK: Mignolet
-Defense: Moreno, Skrtel, Manquillo
-H Midfield: Gerrard, Henderson
-A Midfield: Suso, Coutinho, Sterling
-Forward: Balotelli, Sturridge*
* if unable to start, substitute Sterling & place Henderson in an A-Midfield spot

...and Balotelli w/a rocket towards goal, blocked away by Tim Howard....
..Liverpool corner...and Lallana's header is deflected away by Howard... *adds deadpan* ...while I loved Howard's Secretary of Defense routine in the World Cup agst. Belgium this past summer, I really hope America's resident Secretary of Defense doesn't do it today in the Derby...

Liverpool have dominated the first 20 minutes, but Roberto Martinez will be pleased that his Everton side have weathered the early storm.
