Liverpool FC: 21 Years Ago - Fowler Hits Five At Anfield
Quote:

--On this day 21 years ago, Robbie Fowler served notice of his natural goalscoring potential by plundering no fewer than five goals in a single match in front of an exhilarated Anfield crowd. Fulham were the visitors to L4 on the evening of Tuesday October 5, 1993 for the second leg of their League Cup clash against Liverpool - and they arrived with prior knowledge of this precocious 18-year-old.

Because 13 days previously, in the opening tie of the contest, Fowler had been handed his maiden senior appearance for the Reds and fittingly marked the occasion with an 83rd-minute strike at Craven Cottage.

But that warning could by no means have prepared the Londoners for what they would be subjected to when they travelled north with the task of overturning a 3-1 deficit to progress to the third round of the competition.

Fowler was merciless in the return, capitalising on the slightest opportunities to add his name to the scoresheet on five separate occasions and provide evidence of the innate striking talent that would bring him 183 goals and eternal popularity with the club.

And but for an agile save by Fulham stopper Jim Stannard, the Toxteth native may have recorded a sixth on the night with an inventive lob. LFCTV GO subscribers can relive the quintet of efforts that did hit the target by clicking play below.

Thoughts on Fowler?

MatchDay Commentators' Personal Note: for what it's worth, I'm of two minds when it comes to Robbie Fowler. On the one hand, I've always thought he was one of our great strikers; maybe not on the level of a Kenny Dalglish, Ian St. John or an Ian Rush, but definitely up there with them. On the other hand, it would've pleased me immensely had Chelsea's Graeme Le Saux kicked Fowler's ass up one end of Stamford Bridge and back down the other end during a Liverpool-Chelsea match back in Feb. 1999...and that's all I'm going to say in regards to that except to say that its' one of the few times you'll ever hear me slag on a Liverpool legend, but in that regard, I've no problem saying it, apologies to the board notwithstanding. i still have it but its pretty warn out now sad1

I was lucky enough to be at that game when he scored those 5 goals, i would class him as one of Liverpool's all time great strikers. I have a few reasons why. He scored goals. All the time. The Liverpool team of the 1990s is one not talked about often, we were exciting to watch some seasons but a lack of silverware was pretty harsh on us all. And Robbie Fowler could of played at any club at the time to win medals. He could of easily left us to join one of the other clubs winning the Premiership and FA cup every year.
