Rodgers on Gerrard
Quote:

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to his departing captain. The manager said: "It is almost an impossible task to find the words to appropriately sum up Steven Gerrard and his importance to Liverpool. This is an era where the word 'legend' is vastly overused, but in his case it actually doesn't do him justice. From a personal point of view I will always have gratitude for the support he gave me, when I arrived here as manager.

"Steven came to see me and promised he would be 100 per cent behind me and do everything he could to help as we looked to introduce new ideas and a new way of working. He wasn't just true to his word, he vastly exceeded it.

"As a player he is immense and the influence he has on games should never be understated. At times he has carried this club on his back and in my time here he has always shown the ability that has rightly seen him be regarded as one of the world's best for well over a decade.

"As a leader and as a man, he is probably incomparable to anyone I have ever worked with. He takes professionalism to a new level and the dedication he has to his work is an example to everyone in the game. He is also someone who has always put the club and team ahead of himself and I think that will ultimately be his legacy."People better placed than me to judge have said Steven is Liverpool's greatest ever player; when you look at the company he is in, that is some statement.

"We of course will miss him, both on the field of play and in his capacity as club captain, but his influence will live on and we wish him nothing but joy and success wherever he chooses to go next. Until that moment arrives I will continue to enjoy working with Steven Gerrard the man and Steven Gerrard the player, one of the greatest we have seen."

The Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group, have joined in with the chorus of praise for outgoing Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard. Principal owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner jointly said in a statement released on the Liverpool website: "This news stirs many strong emotions for all of us connected with the club.

"There is sadness that such a great player and person is leaving and won't be playing for Liverpool beyond this season. But there is also a sense of celebration and gratitude, that we've all been privileged to watch and work with one of the true greats, not just of this club, but the game in general.

"We will all have our own personal memories of breathtaking Steven Gerrard moments; there are far too many to list. His contribution to the club is almost beyond measure and it's testimony to his influence, that despite Liverpool having such a long and distinguished list of legendary figures, the name Steven Gerrard will always be at the summit.

"Another emotion that resonates today is respect; a respect not just for his achievements but also the decision he and his family have reached. Steven will always have a part to play for this club, as and when the time comes that he wishes to return. I hope we all respect that Steven and his family want to pursue something new and different for the final years of his playing career.

"We all wish him well in this endeavour and look forward to welcoming him back to Anfield in the future, when the time is appropriate."

Lots of glowing tributes for the former England skipper then, but he still has five months to play in that famous red shirt! Looks like some people are already wary of overkill with so much time to come, with some comparing it to Brian O'Driscoll's drawn-out retirement from rugby union:
--Stevie G's people have been on the blower to the IRFU re Drico's long goodbye. They reckon something around ten times that scale should do. (Larry Ryan, 2 Jan. 2015)

Club honours
We listed his personal accolades earlier, but at Liverpool he has won his fair share of silverware too. Obviously the one that has evaded him is the Premier League title, with last year's slip and extra crushing blow to him when, in the back of his mind, he feared today may be coming.

But it's an impressive list by anyone's standards:
-FA Cup: 2001, 2006
-League Cup: 2001, 2003, 2012
-Community Shield: 2006
-UEFA Champions League: 2005
-UEFA Cup: 2001
-UEFA Super Cup: 2001, 2005.

Stat attack
Did you know that since the introduction of the Player of the Month award in 1994, Steven Gerrard has won it a RECORD six times in the Premier League? Not bad. Not bad at all. That stat courtesy of our chums at Opta.

Steven Gerrard has been struggling for first-team action recently, with suggestions that his talents are on the wane. But I took a deeper look into things and the stats suggest completely the opposite. In fact, he could be getting even better...

More tributes
Lifelong Red Rickie Lambert hailed Steven Gerrard as "Mr Liverpool", adding he will never be forgotten at Anfield. "Stevie is his own man, but he is Mr Liverpool," said the striker. "He's No 1 for me and I think he will always be. He has meant everything to me growing up as a Liverpool fan. The nights he has given Liverpool fans are unbelievable. I'll never forget them and I know the Liverpool fans will never forget them."

Vice-captain Jordan Henderson, who will take over as skipper from Gerrard in the summer, has always been struck by his modesty. "He is a top player, but he is also a top person," he said. "The lads can go to him with anything and he will always help them out and put them first. That is massive as a captain. With that aura he's got, he could be a different person, but he's very humble."

Philippe Coutinho said: "I try to observe him in training and his playing style. He's phenomenal. It's a pleasure for me to be playing alongside him."

Glen Johnson said: "Steven has been a fantastic player for many years and what he has done for Liverpool Football Club is just huge."

We now know Steven Gerrard’s Premier League days are numbered.

For a generation of football fans, Reds or otherwise, they only know a Liverpool with Steven Gerrard. That number eight shirt and the skipper’s armband go hand in hand. The images of that goal against Olympiakos, that moment against West Ham, that hit against Manchester City are memories etched into all of our minds.

At his best Gerrard was box office. The perfect example of the cliché of a humble fan who got his dream to play for his hometown team - and took that chance with both hands. He did everything those in the Kop wished they could. Ran down every ball, tackled every man, covered every blade of grass and cometh the hour, he would always be the man to save the day.

Sadly those halcyon, all-action days are over for Stevie G. His 34-year-old legs will no longer carry him to the very top of the world game as they once did. Despite Brendan Rodgers’ assertions yesterday that he was very nearly Player of the Year last year that isn’t true, his 34-goal since departed Uruguayan teammate clearly was. Once the driving force Gerrard had become increasingly a passenger, flitting in and out of games with a free-kick here or penalty there. Games passed him by rather than being grabbed by the scruff of the neck by Captain Fantastic. The time to discuss his failings, or lack thereof, is another though. As the countdown begins let us all remember him for what he was, not what he has become of late.

It is ironic or perhaps strangely fitting that after a career playing alongside one another - or not as the case so often was - that Frank Lampard is now, and forever will be, embedded as Gerrard’s late-career yard-stick. While the former Chelsea man, two years Gerrard’s senior, is still proving his worth for Manchester City in his new cameo role, Mr Liverpool has no intention of seeing his curtain call from anywhere other than centre stage. As a neutral onlooker I would have liked to see him stay, and used the same way as his old sparring partner is now.

But after all he has done for both Liverpool and the Premier League, Gerrard has earned the right to leave on his terms. It’ll be a sad day for all of football, both in Liverpool and out, when he does.

Mario Balotelli likened Steven Gerrard to Andrea Pirlo and claimed it will be very hard for Liverpool to replace him. "I think of him as being at the same level as Pirlo," he said. "Vision, technique, but he is powerful as well. Stevie can do anything, he's an amazing player. It's going to be very difficult for the team to find another player like him in the future."

Lucas said: "When you see the name Steven Gerrard, you automatically think Liverpool Football Club. He really is the symbol of the club. He is a player who has always valued the club too. I've never played with a player as complete as him."

Jon Flanagan said: "Steven Gerrard was my hero growing up, so to run out and play with him has been a dream come true."
