Gerard Houllier says he is not surprised by Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool for a fresh challenge. Houllier handed Gerrard his Liverpool debut back in November 1998 before making him captain and says he wants to play outside the Premier League.

"I'm not surprised because I knew he wanted a new challenge and it's come at an age where he's got to look at this future after football," said the former Reds boss. "I think he wanted to do something different. He didn't want to stay in the Premier League, I know that. I was not totally surprised by it. I know Stevie and he would not play against Liverpool.

"All I know he is that he is a kind-hearted, generous person. You need to know the man first, who does a lot of work for charity. He's a great person, a great character. He's had to overcome injuries. He was an outstanding player for Liverpool in terms of technique, speed and power. He combined the three. And you need to remember the leader he was for the club. Nobody will forget the Champions League Final in 2005."

Houllier also paid tribute to Gerrard's professionalism and work ethic. "He understood he had to live for his job and not use his job to live," he told SkySports. "He devoted his time, energy, diet, everything for the job. That's why he was successful and became world class because he made the sacrifices for that. He had talent, but he worked very hard on the back of that to be successful."

Houllier believes Gerrard could return to Anfield one day as manager. "Maybe it's right that he has a break from Liverpool and maybe he gets through his different qualifications to be a manager, then I wouldn't be surprised to one day see him become the boss at Anfield," said the Frenchman. "He's always talked about the team. He's someone who thinks team first and I would not be surprised if one day he becomes a successful manager."

I would not be surprised at that, Teebag...and I suspect, whenever Gerrard lands in North America - assuming he comes 'Stateside - his jersey will be the top-seller for whichever team he signs with.

Some reaction from abroad now. Julio Maldonado, a sports journalist from Spain, has tweeted his view:
"Wayne Rooney is, for me, the best English player of the last fifteen years. But Gerrard is more, he represents an intangible. A true icon."

LA Galaxy’s head coach Bruce Arena has confirmed that legendary Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will join the Major League Soccer franchise this summer.

Last week Gerrard, 34, revealed he would not sign a new deal at Liverpool and would let his current contract run out before continuing his career in the USA. Now, Arena has confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Gerrard will arrive in July and that the reigning MLS Cup Champions “have a plan for him.”

Gerrard has spent his entire professional career at Liverpool, winning 11 trophies and carrying the Reds for most of his 17-year stint as a lynchpin in the Merseyside giants’ midfield. However after turning down chances to join Real Madrid, Chelsea and several of Europe’s other big boys in the past, it seems like a final few years in the sun to end his career was too good an offer for the Liverpudlian to resist.

Various reports over the past week have speculated that LA was Gerrard’s most likely destination in MLS and the former English national team captain is expected to sign an 18-month deal with a salary reported to be in the range of $155,000 per week, or $6 million per year.

Gerrard has told the LA Times that the move is a “match made in heaven” and that he “wants to add some medals and trophies to his collection”, while Galaxy club president Chris Klein said “Steven Gerrard is the perfect fit with what he brings to us on the field and the character that he has off it.”

With LA winning their fifth MLS Cup title in 2014 to become the most successful franchise in league history, Gerrard’s arrival will cement the Galaxy’s spot as the top professional team in North America as they aim to continue their dynasty in California.

With Gerrard and reigning MLS MVP Robbie Keane in tandem from this summer onwards, the rest of Major League Soccer will be shuddering in their cleats. One of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history is officially heading to LA. (NBC ProSoccerTalk)
