--Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho today collected the Standard Chartered Player of the Month award for December after topping a supporters' poll for his performances across a busy period. In a special presentation at Melwood, the Brazilian received the trophy - that is decided by the fans - for the second time this season and the fourth overall since he arrived at the club in January 2013.

The Reds' No.10 saw off competition from fellow attackers Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling for the prize following a month in which he started six of the side's eight fixtures and produced a number of trademark displays.

Coutinho's creativity, energy and intense pressing typified Liverpool during the 2-2 Anfield draw against Arsenal and it was his shimmy and strike from the edge of the area that opened the scoring in the final game before Christmas. His form continued once the festivities had concluded too, assisting Sterling for the winner at Burnley on Boxing Day with a visionary lofted pass, before helping Lallana see off Swansea City with a fine flicked tee-up.

The 22-year-old told Liverpoolfc.com: "It means so much. As I always say, it gives me even more confidence to deliver on the pitch knowing that I've been voted by the fans. It is very important to me. We had a lot of games in December and I had the opportunity to play regularly. I want to keep improving every game to help the team as much as I can. I'm always keen to improve and do my best to help Liverpool."

Congrats, Coutinho! yay1 yay1 thumb1

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' - Bill Shankly, Liverpool F.C.
