Liverpool FC Xtra: Liverpool's 10 Greatest Villa Park Victories

Quote:

Ahead of Liverpool's trip to face Aston Villa on Saturday, we've gone through the history books to pick out the Reds' most memorable triumphs at Villa Park, featuring games against the home side, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and more...

...and the 10 victories in question?
Quote:

No. 10: Liverpool 0 - 0 Portsmouth (LFC wins 3-1 on penalties) – April 13, 1992
--En route to winning the FA Cup at the end of the 1991-92 campaign, with Ronnie Moran in charge having replaced the recuperating Graeme Souness, Liverpool edged out a plucky Portsmouth on penalties to reach Wembley in the semi-final replay at Villa Park. Following a goalless draw, John Barnes, Ian Rush and Dean Saunders all scored in the shootout as Portsmouth missed three of their four shots and the Reds progressed.

No. 9: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal – November 23, 1988
--Following a 1-1 Anfield draw and a goalless draw at Highbury, Villa Park was the stage to settle this marathon Littlewoods Cup third round tie. Paul Merson fired Arsenal into the lead, but Steve McMahon equalised with an unstoppable 30-yard rocket into the top corner. John Aldridge came off the bench to head home a dramatic winner three minutes from time.

No.8: Aston Villa 0-2 Liverpool – January 31, 1988
--Kenny Dalglish's brilliant 1987-88 team went to Villa Park in front of the live ITV cameras for their biggest test of the season so far. Villa under Graham Taylor were an emerging force. Liverpool were in unfamiliar colours, sporting a white shirt from the previous season due to a colour clash. John Barnes scored one of the best diving headers ever witnessed by a Liverpool player before Peter Beardsley finished off the tie by making it 2-0.

No.7: Liverpool 2-1 Wycombe - April 8, 2001
--En route to clinching a glittering treble of trophies, Liverpool overcame a spirited Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Villa Park. Late goals from Emile Heskey and a sensational Robbie Fowler free-kick sealed Liverpool's ticket for the Millennium Stadium, where they would face Arsenal in the final.

No.6: Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool - December 29, 2009
--In bitterly cold conditions, Fernando Torres was cool as ice with a late intervention that sent the travelling Kop wild with delight. Rafael Benitez's side had toiled in the freezing temperatures against an obstinate Villa outfit, but then, in the 90th minute, Torres wrote the perfect conclusion to 2009 by latching onto Yossi Benayoun's scuffed pass and shooting across the face of goal into the net.

No.5: Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool - January 20, 1984
--This game was settled by perhaps the finest hat-trick in Liverpool history. Ian Rush's famous treble in the distinctive all-yellow strip is a cherished one. On a frosty Friday night in front of the live BBC cameras, the striker enhanced his reputation as one of the deadliest in Europe with a clinical display of finishing, the highlight of which was an exquisite chip over Nigel Spink nine minutes from time.

No.4: Aston Villa 3-4 Liverpool – December 18, 2003
--The start was delayed by floodlight failure, but the players illuminated the night once they took to the turf. Liverpool and Villa slogged it out, exchanging seven goals in the Worthington Cup quarter-final. Danny Murphy, Milan Baros and Steven Gerrard all hit the back of the net, and with the scores level in the 90th minute, Murphy popped up with the winner.

No.3: Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea - March 27, 1965
--It had been joked that the mythical Liver Birds would fly from their perch the day a Liverpool team brought home the FA Cup, such was the belief that they would never add their name to the cup's roll of honour after 73 years of trying. However, when Peter Thompson and Willie Stevenson's goals helped them beat Chelsea 2-0 in the 1965 semi-final, Kopites were off to Wembley for another attempt at glory.

No.2: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool – August 11, 2007
--With the clock ticking towards full-time on the opening day of the 2007-08 season, Liverpool turned to Steven Gerrard for inspiration and he delivered a sumptuous free-kick to get them off to a winning start. The skipper won the set-piece by drawing a foul on the edge of the Villa box, and stepped up to curl home the winner into the top corner for 2-1.

No.1: Liverpool 2-1 West Ham – April 1, 1981
--We've gone for this as our greatest victory at Villa Park, even though Aston Villa played no part. Following a 1-1 draw at Wembley in the League Cup final, Bob Paisley's Liverpool beat West Ham 2-1 to lift the Cup in the replay in Birmingham, thanks to goals from Kenny Dalglish and a rare Alan Hansen winner. It was the first time the Reds had lifted the trophy and they would go on to win the League Cup in the following three seasons, too.

This may sound weird, but we've actually done better at Villa Park against Aston Villa than at any other venue in the Premier League...

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
-Aston Villa's only home win in the last 16 attempts against Liverpool in the Premier League came in May 2011 (W1, D5, L10). The home side have mustered only seven goals in that time and last scored more than once in a 4-2 defeat in November 1998.
-Liverpool have won their last three Premier League visits to Villa Park. They have never won four consecutive top-flight matches at Aston Villa.

Aston Villa
-Villa are winless in six league games, the worst current run in the division. They have scored one goal and had four players sent off during that spell.
-They have only won two of 17 league matches since mid-September (W2, D6, L9).
-Paul Lambert's side have played for seven hours and 12 minutes since scoring in the Premier League (Christian Benteke's strike against Manchester United on 20 December).
-Their total of 11 goals from 21 games is the third lowest in top-flight history; Derby had 10 goals at the same stage in 2007-08, while Leicester scored eight times in 1977-78.
-They have only averaged a point per game from their last 63 league fixtures at Villa Park, winning just 15 times (W15, D18, L30).
-Benteke has only scored twice in his last 13 league appearances but he has registered four goals in as many games against Liverpool.

Liverpool
-The Reds have lost just one of their last nine Premier League fixtures (W5, D3, L1).
-They have won successive top-flight away matches by a 1-0 scoreline. Liverpool are yet to win three Premier League away games in a row this season.
-Brendan Rodgers' side and QPR are the only two teams not to have drawn a Premier League away game this season.
-They have gone 65 Premier League games without defeat after leading at half-time (W54, D11).
-Steven Gerrard has scored 12 Premier League goals against Aston Villa, more than any other side in his career.
