Liverpool Ladies: Easton Hopes For Cup Success

Liverpool Ladies defender Becky Easton admits the Reds will be gunning to win the FA Women's Super League title again this coming season but she wants even more silverware lining the trophy cabinet in 2015. Matt Beard's side have won the last two WSL crowns, in 2013 and 2014, the latest sealed in October on a dramatic final day where both Chelsea and Birmingham were beaten to the finishing line.

However the Reds were unable to make it through to the FA WSL Continental Cup semi-finals last term and were eliminated from the FA Cup in the quarter-finals against Merseyside rivals Everton. And while Easton is keen to retain the league title they fought so hard to defend last season, she concedes they must improve in other competitions to become an even bigger force in the women’s game.

“We’ve proved in the last two years that we’re capable of winning the WSL. It’s a fantastic competition and we really want to continue that success, but I think we need to also look at other areas,” she said. “We’ve not done too well in the cup competitions in the last two seasons so we need to improve on the Continental Cup and the FA Cup.”

Liverpool will also be vying for a better campaign in the UEFA Women's Champions League after being eliminated from the current edition by Swedish side Linkoping in October.

“I think we need to use the lessons that we’ve learned from when we’ve played the Swedish team and hopefully progress a bit further next year,” added Easton. “Last season teams raised their game against us, so next season we expect more of the same.

“I think others have probably watched what we have done over the past couple of years and will want to stop us. Everybody wants to beat the champions but we need to react to that and keep moving forward.”

Liverpool have added to their already impressive squad with a trio of stars – Satara Murray, Ingrid Ryland and Line Krogedal Smorsgard. American central defender Murray, 21, joins from North Carolina Tar Heels, full-back Ryland arrives from Norwegian Toppserien side Arna-Bjornar and Klepp IL striker Krogedal Smorsgard, 27, has also joined up with the reigning WSL champions.

“Matt Beard’s the type of manager who’s always looking to strengthen the squad, always looking to improve in all areas on and off the pitch, which is great,” continued Easton. “I think we needed to look for players who can play in Europe because I think Europe needs to be a big goal for us next year so we need to progress in that.”
