Liverpool FC: "We Have The Quality To Book (A) Trip To Wembley"

--Jordan Henderson insists Liverpool have the necessary qualities to book a trip to Wembley by overcoming Chelsea in their Capital One Cup semi-final tomorrow night. The tie with the Barclays Premier League leaders is finely balanced following a 1-1 draw in the opening leg between the rivals at Anfield last Tuesday.

Eden Hazard handed Jose Mourinho's team an early advantage from the penalty spot that evening, but the response from the Reds was hugely impressive. They dominated the second period and deserved more than just the equaliser produced by an exquisite dribble and finish from the returning Raheem Sterling.

Henderson therefore approaches the decisive return at Stamford Bridge with confidence as the target of silverware moves within reach for Brendan Rodgers' charges. "It's a big opportunity for us going there on Tuesday," said the Liverpool vice-captain. "We need to defend like we have been and look to hurt them on the break.

"It would mean everything to get to a Wembley final. One of our big aims this season was to win a trophy and if we beat Chelsea, we won't be far away. We've been through some tough times this season but we have dug in and stuck together as a team. We've come out the other side.

"We've got great team spirit and if we play the way we can, then we can get a good result there. We have to be strong both physically and mentally against Chelsea, and I think we've shown that recently. We've shown that we can be physical when we need to be. We've been fantastic of late and hopefully we can keep putting in performances. We are growing as a team. Hopefully we can keep going from strength to strength."

Chelsea were eliminated from the FA Cup in dramatic fashion on Saturday, with Bradford City recovering from a two-goal deficit to record a 4-2 triumph at Stamford Bridge. Henderson said: "I'm not sure whether Chelsea going out of the FA Cup will work for or against us. I'm sure they will just look to put it behind them.

"From our point of view, we took a lot of confidence from the first leg. We were a bit disappointed not to win the game but our confidence has really grown over the past month or two. The second leg might be a little bit different with Chelsea being at home. We know they might come straight at us from the off. They have some fantastic players but we are a good team and we've shown that of late."

This Is Anfield: How Liverpool Will Line Up Against Chelsea
Excerpt...
Quote:

The Line Up
Rodgers is almost nailed on to name the strongest XI he possibly and realistically can as he searches for his first silverware as Liverpool boss, and that could see the Reds line up with the same team that started the match against the Premier League leaders in last week’s 1-1 draw. Keeping faith with the side that completely outplayed Chelsea in the first-leg would therefore see Liverpool line up like so:

Rodgers could opt to make a small number of changes to the team that performed so well last week however, and the Liverpool manager’s unwavering preference for Glen Johnson could see the right back come into the starting side along with Adam Lallana. If the former England defender does keep his place in the XI, it should this time be in a wing-back role instead of in the back three that continues to impress with Emre Can, Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho all having proved that they are the best options to fill the three defensive positions.

Lallana could count himself fortunate to be given a starting berth after a poor display against Bolton last weekend, but if Rodgers wants to operate with a fully mobile team, the summer arrival could play in the front three with Gerrard ready for if and when called upon. Those two changes could see Liverpool line up like this come kick-off time Tuesday:

Liverpool proved they could be more than a match for Jose Mourinho’s men in the first leg with the result on the night the only downside to an excellent performance at Anfield, and it is essential that the Reds take confidence and belief from that display into the second leg in order to reach another Wembley final.

"Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool travel to Chelsea without trepidation after an impressive performance to draw 1-1 in the first leg of this Capital One Cup semi-final at Anfield - but can the same be said for Jose Mourinho's side after their shock 4-2 home defeat to Bradford City in the FA Cup?

"Rodgers is seeking his first trophy as Liverpool manager and it would be a real statement of intent to reach Wembley at the expense of his mentor. Will Chelsea still be feeling the nerves after that FA Cup shock or will Liverpool feel the backlash from a wounded team and manager?"

....from the BBC's Twitter feed....
Monday was the birthdays for both Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho, by the way, so the Beeb asked, "What would you buy them for their birthday?"... whistle1 whistle1 whistle1
-Goodbye Legend SG8: I would buy Jose a new bus and Brendan some foreign players.
-Don Bellucci Jibola: I'll buy Jose Mourinho a whip for the players. Better than the silent treatment when they disappoint like on Saturday night.
-Joseph: I'd buy Brendan a time machine so we can go back and not sell Suarez!
-Kevin in Hornchurch: Jose. A meal in a Bradford Balti house to appreciate the diet of a successful team! Brendan. A trip to Bolton. Oops forgot it is already arranged for him.
-Spike from Stamford: I would buy Rodgers a striker and Mourinho a blindfold so he doesn't see his team get humiliated again tonight.

"Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will be telling his players 'you are my untouchables, you are my team, now go out and prove it'. No one expected what happened to Chelsea against Bradford in a million years. Tonight is a tough ask for Liverpool. I expect Chelsea to be strong, powerful and on the front foot. There are very few weaknesses in tonight's Chelsea team."

Mourinho's compliment?
Chelsea v Liverpool (Agg: 1-1) (19:45 GMT)

He would probably never admit it in public, but Jose Mourinho clearly respects Liverpool fans and the atmosphere they are capable of generating at Anfield based on his quotes before the game.

The Portuguese said: "If Stamford Bridge can give us 25% of the emotion Anfield gives Liverpool we can do it. Chelsea, instead of 1,000, will have 40,000. I hope that can make a difference in the atmosphere. Interesting stuff. I always thought Jose was more ruthless, the type to take emotion out of the equation in his quest for glory?

"Plenty of debate here around Chelsea's team selection - and what appears to be manager Jose Mourinho's decision to make Gary Cahill pay the price for the FA Cup defeat to Bradford City.

"Kurt Zouma gets another chance alongside John Terry and perhaps Mourinho also noted how the pace of Liverpool's Raheem Sterling troubled Cahill at Anfield last week, especially when he was powerless as he ran at him before scoring a brilliant equaliser."

'We should have won 3-1 or 4-1'
Chelsea v Liverpool (Agg: 1-1) (19:45 GMT)

Which words would you need if you created a Brendan Rodgers bingo game? 'Retention'? 'Speed'?
Here he is talking about the first leg to the Liverpool Echo: "The only thing we missed was that finishing touch in the box. Anyone who saw the game will think it should have been one that we won 3-1 or 4-1. But we didn't and it's now up to one game.

"We're playing with confidence and we know our retention and speed in the game can hurt any opponent. Winning at Stamford Bridge would be important because it would be the final step towards getting to Wembley. The message to the players will be to go out and have no fear. We respect the opponent of course because they're a very good team but we've got nothing to fear in the game."

We've been asking you what you'd get Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho as a birthday present...
-TJ: If someone got Brendan a Balotelli as an early birthday present, I really hope they included a receipt. He needs to be returned to the shop sharpish.
-HB: I'd buy Brendan a thesaurus - run out of ways to praise the team for having 'character' and 'technicians'.

...minutes away from kickoff at Stamford Bridge...the floodlights are shining brightly, the flags are waving, the atmosphere is electric (well...as electric as a London atmosphere can get.. wink1 wink1 ...)....time for some football.
