The Reds are unbeaten in their last six league fixtures, but will be looking to bounce back from their Capital One Cup elimination. No kidding; West Ham's been one of those big surprises of the season thus far...I mean, did anyone have the Hammers anywhere close to the European positions at this point in the 14-15' campaign? b23 b23

Yahoo Sports: Liverpool-West Ham Preview
Quote:

Liverpool are expected to welcome striker Daniel Sturridge back into their squad this weekend, but seem to be preparing to part company with another striker very soon. With Sturridge available to manager Brendan Rodgers for the first time since August, the Reds will try to avoid another disappointing result against West Ham United on Saturday. Without their attacking spearhead Liverpool (10-5-7) have failed to live up to lofty expectations this season, and sit eighth in the Premier League - one point behind West Ham (10-6-6).

The Reds were also dumped out of the League Cup on Tuesday, falling 1-0 at Chelsea in extra time after playing out a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the first leg a week earlier. "The learning for us is to make the next step," Rodgers told the team's official website. "You saw a lot of young players out there working, and now we've got to make the next step and try to go on and win a trophy."

Having Sturridge back should help. The forward had 22 goals in 29 league matches last season, and scored once in the first three of 2014-15 before being sidelined with a thigh injury. "I don't think he'll be 100 percent when he comes back, that will only come when he's got his game time once he gets playing games," Rodgers said. "All we can do, alongside him, is make sure he is in the best possible condition that he can be, both physically and mentally, and that will give him a chance to stay fit."

However, Mario Balotelli seems to be running out of chances at Liverpool, and could be on his way out with the transfer window closing Monday. The mercurial Italian forward hasn't scored in 12 league matches, and Rodgers left him out of the matchday squad for the scoreless draw with Bolton in the FA Cup last Saturday.

Balotelli was mostly ineffective as a substitute in the 70th minute Tuesday, and Rodgers has slighted his work rate. "He's naturally been a box player," Rodgers said. "There is much more asked at this team and in the intensity of the team."

Rodgers would like to see the Reds get off to a better start against West Ham after giving up two goals in the opening seven minutes of a 3-1 loss Sept. 20. Liverpool haven't lost both league games in a season against the Hammers since 1998-99, and will be encouraged by a 13-5-0 against the Londoners at Anfield with a 37-5 scoring advantage.

West Ham are unbeaten in six straight matches in all competitions (2-4-0). They won 1-0 at League One's Bristol City in the FA Cup on Tuesday after beating Hull City 3-0 in league play Jan. 18. Manager Sam Allardyce may opt to put Diafra Sakho back in the lineup for the first time since he scored a goal in a 1-1 draw with West Brom on New Year's Day. The Senegal forward returned from a back injury to score the match-winner off the bench against Bristol City.

"I am really pleased to be back playing again and to score such an important goal for the team," Sakho told the team's official website. "To score my first goal in the FA Cup was a special feeling. We must now make sure we don't waste that effort." Sakho's goal versus Liverpool in September came five minutes after Winston Reid opened the scoring with just two minutes on the clock.Despite only playing in 16 total matches, Sakho leads the Hammers with 10 goals.

This Is Anfield: How Liverpool Could Lineup Vs. West Ham
Excerpt...
Quote:

The Line Up
If Sakho is fit, Rodgers should maintain consistency with the solid back three of Can, Skrtel and the Frenchman, though a change should happen higher up the pitch where Lallana should enter in the side for Gerrard for obvious reasons. The solitary change will therefore hopefully see Liverpool’s starting XI line up like so come kick-off Saturday:

If Liverpool’s best central defender isn’t fit enough to take part, a return to the team for Lovren should materialise with the Croatian naturally a left sided centre back and a more physical option against Sam Allardyce’s side, but Rodgers could also add more fresh legs to his team elsewhere.

The demanding schedule ahead and Tuesday’s tough encounter could see Alberto Moreno or Markovic make way with Enrique, Johnson or Jordon Ibe – who is cup tied for the replay with Bolton next week – all options to come into midfield, and with Lallana replacing the captain in the attack, the Reds boss could name a team with alteration which would see Liverpool look like this come 3pm Saturday afternoon:

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
-Liverpool are unbeaten in 41 top-flight home matches against West Ham since a 2-1 defeat in September 1963 (W30, D11).
-That remains West Ham's last win at Anfield in any division. They have only won three of 56 league encounters at the stadium.
-West Ham sit one point and one place above Liverpool in the league table. This is the first time the Hammers have been above Liverpool after 22 games in the Premier League.

Liverpool

-They are vying to win three successive matches, and keep three clean sheets in a row, for the first time in the league this season.

-Sam Allardyce has never won a Premier League game at Anfield as manager in 11 attempts.
-West Ham have scored a league-high 14 headed goals. Five of those have been scored by Diafra Sakho, which is also the best record in the division.

Will Daniel Sturridge make his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt since 31 August 2014? The England striker returns to the substitutes bench after five months out injured. But there is no Steven Gerrard, who needs one more outing to become the third Reds player to make 700 appearances. Gerrard, who has a tight hamstring, is replaced by Adam Lallana.
West Ham United make three changes to the side that started the last Premier League game on 18 January. In come defenders Joey O'Brien and Winston Reid, while midfielder Morgan Amalfitano also starts. Striker Andy Carroll faces his former club, while 16-year-old defender Reece Oxford is on the bench and will become West Ham's youngest Premier League player is he features.

-Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Henderson, Lucas, Moreno, Markovic, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling.
-West Ham XI: Adrian, O'Brien, Collins, Reid, Cresswell, Song, Amalfitano, Nolan, Downing, Carroll, Valencia.

....from the BBC's Twitter feed....
-Darren Loose: Is Gerrard injured or dropped? If dropped, Rogers should be sacked! He's the reason he's leaving!
-Kash: I can see why Rodgers has left Stevie out. Bolton away then the Merseyside derby to come.
-Josh Trebilcock: I see Gerrard is left out of the Liverpool squad. Outrage, then check my fixtures list... ah...

The BBC was saying that Gerrard had a tight hamstring, so they left him off the team sheet to save him for next week, either for the FA Cup replay agst. Bolton or for the return leg of the Merseyside Derby... hmm1

As for Saturday's early match btwn Hull & Newcastle...some harsh words from the Beeb's Danny Mills:
Quote:

Former England defender Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at KC Stadium
--"That is it for Hull. They are finished today. Yoan Gouffran got a little bit fortunate in that his shot looped up over Allan McGregor, who couldn't do anything about it. But Curtis Davies is limping, and Gouffran went past him far too easily. Some will say Davies is brave and is soldering on despite an injury, but as captain, if you are struggling then you shouldn't be in central defence."

...for what its' worth, I agree...Hull just played today like they were mailing it in for the Championship next year....sad... sad1

Sturridge is back
Quote:

Rapturous applause from the early arrivals inside Anfield as Daniel Sturridge runs out to warm-up for Liverpool after five months out injured. The 25-year-old England striker, dressed in red tracksuit top, looks raring to go but will have to be patient. The former Chelsea man is on the substitutes bench against West Ham.
