--Simon Mignolet has called on Liverpool to use their Capital One Cup disappointment as motivation for the other opportunities to succeed they have available this season. When Branislav Ivanovic directed a close-range header past the Belgian goalkeeper's reach on Tuesday night, the Reds' chances of lifting the trophy on March 1 were dented.

Four minutes of extra-time in the semi-final, second leg had elapsed when the hosts broke the deadlock at Stamford Bridge to assume a 2-1 aggregate advantage in the tie. Despite their best efforts, Brendan Rodgers' team were unable to summon a response in the remaining time and hopes of a journey to Wembley for the showpiece were eradicated.

Mignolet told Liverpoolfc.com: "Everybody is disappointed when you go out of a competition that you want to win, and especially with the effort and performances that we put in over the two legs. We definitely deserved more than we got. But we have to accept it and move on, and make sure that we go again in the other competitions that we're still playing in."

Liverpool had dominated the first leg at Anfield but only found the target once in response to Eden Hazard's penalty, leaving the decider finely balanced in London. They were more than a match for Jose Mourinho's charges in the return too, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois once again having to produce a series of pivotal saves.

"The performances over the two games we played were excellent, and I don't think anybody can be disappointed with their own individual performance," continued Mignolet. "But, obviously, when you go out, straight after the game everybody is disappointed - because you want to win the competition and go to the final. That didn't happen, unfortunately. We've got a young group - everybody wants to win competitions and trophies. We'll make sure that we go again in the competitions that we're still featuring in."

The No.22 was a commanding presence at Stamford Bridge, coolly collecting any deliveries into the Reds' area and thwarting Chelsea at the final moment on several occasions. Twice he denied Diego Costa in dangerous circumstances, initially to block a deflected strike and latterly to rush out and tackle the Spain international as he sought to convert.

But the Belgian's thoughts were not occupied by his own display. "It's difficult at this moment in time," he said. "I wanted to go through and win the competition. In the next couple of days, I'll analyse the game and take the positives and negatives out of it, like I've always done.

"The most important thing is that we have to go again on Saturday in the Premier League and then the FA Cup after that. We have to pick ourselves up and go again."

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' - Bill Shankly, Liverpool F.C.
