Liverpool return to action with an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday. The Reds will aim to set up a meeting with Crystal Palace in round five by overcoming their Championship opponents after they clinched a goalless draw at Anfield. Liverpool's last visit to the Macron Stadium was January 21, 2012 when they were beaten 3-1 by the Trotters in a Premier League encounter.

SB Nation - The Liverpool Offside: Gerrard Set To Make 700th Liverpool Appearance Against Bolton

@LFCOffside

--Noticeably absent from the squad yesterday--not just the starting eleven, but the 18-man matchday squad--was Steven Gerrard, who's found his minutes further managed since his announcement earlier in the month that he would be leaving at season's end for LA Galaxy. The captain's omission still seems jarring each time a squad is announced, and yesterday it was especially so given that it came with the chance to reach 700 appearances in front of his home supporters.

That he was left out wasn't strictly down to rotation, however, as Brendan Rodgers noted pre-match that Gerrard was carrying a slight hamstring injury after the 120 minutes he played midweek against Chelsea in the second leg of the League Cup semifinals. That should leave him in line for number 700 on Tuesday at Bolton in the FA Cup, and the manager commented briefly on the captain's achievement, which should, assuming the initial evaluation was accurate, come in a competition in which his heroics have long featured: "It's an incredible achievement and I'm not sure it will happen again. It will take some achievement by any player to do that again. His life and journey here have been remarkable and you see how committed and focused he still is. It is absolutely incredible and there are more appearances to come."

Gerrard is currently third behind Jamie Carragher, who made his 737th appearance against QPR in the 2012-2013 season, and Ian Callaghan, whose 857 will surely remain the top number in the club's history. If Gerrard feature against Bolton, it will also be his 465th match as captain, comfortably first on a list that includes the likes of Ron Yeats, Emlyn Hughes, Ian Rush, and Alan Hansen in the top ten.

Yeah, I was hoping for the same thing as well...but, still, 700 appearances is a big accomplishment, though.

It's a star-studded line-up on BBC One this evening. Bolton's loss is punditry's gain as injured striker Emile Heskey has been tempted into the studio to provide expert analysis, alongside former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy and ex-Bolton star Fabrice Muamba.
Steve Bower and Phil Neville will be on commentary duty for TV, while Alan Green and Kevin Kilbane will do the honours for Radio 5 live.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Macron Stadium
Bolton v Liverpool (19:45 GMT)
Quote:

"Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will recognise the threat posed by Bolton Wanderers after they earned a goalless draw in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield - but he will feel this competition represents a realistic chance of silverware after Chelsea and Manchester City fell by the wayside.

"Bolton boss Neil Lennon, meanwhile, has got what it takes to engineer the big result as he proved when Celtic beat Barcelona in the Champions League in November 2012. A win here against Liverpool in the replay at the Macron Stadium will enhance his managerial reputation in England after his successes north of the border."

The good news for omen lovers is that following a 1-0 win at a pre-Asda Burnden Park in 1965, Liverpool went on to win the Cup, beating Leeds in the final. Great photo that. Not sure if you can read it but the Evening Standard's headline isn't up to much.

Bolton v Liverpool (19:45 GMT)
Quote:

Bolton manager Neil Lennon: "It's nice to have the big names back again and under the lights it's always a special occasion.

"We're playing Matt Mills up front. With Emile [Heskey] sitting in that warm [BBC One] studio, Max Clayton injured and Adam Le Fondre cup-tied, we're a little bit short and we need a bit of physicality up there. I remember Matt Elliott doing it for Leicester - Matt is Matt Mills's father-in-law so there's a bit of a connection there. We're hoping the ball will stick up there with him up front. Bradford [beating Chelsea] was an amazing result and we wanted to be part of that and thankfully we're still in the competition.

"I don't want to build Zach Clough up too much but we think he's a very talented young player and I've no hesitation playing him tonight."

Sturridge is not ready'
Quote:

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "We expect a tough game but it's a competition we want to do well in.
"Steven Gerrard had a precautionary rest at the weekend, he felt his hamstring but he is very important to us.
"Daniel Sturridge is not ready to start yet. It's very early on in his comeback and we've just got to manage that integration back into the team. He is very determined to make up for missing five months of the season but he's also realistic."
