'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' - Bill Shankly, Liverpool F.C.

Daniel Sturridge is on the bench for Liverpool this evening but there are reports that he has left the warm-up early accompanied by a Liverpool physio. Another setback for the England man?

'Remember the game? I was in goal lad!'

The stuff of dreams for a BBC reporter. Watch this great clip as Stuart Flinders unwittingly asked a former Liverpool goalkeeper for his memories from a derby game with Everton. Flinders was asking people on the street in Liverpool if they remembered the 1967 match at Goodison Park. He was actually talking to Tommy Lawrence, who played in goal for Liverpool for over a decade, and appeared in that very game.

...minutes away from kickoff at Goodison Park; a bitterly cold night, to be sure, but an electric atmosphere permeates the air as we await the 224th Merseyside Derby...

BBC Radio Merseyside
Everton v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)
Quote:

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet: "This is another 90 minutes to be played. No-one will find this a hard game to get up for. I played in derbies for Sunderland, and those were hostile, but I've always enjoyed playing in big games which are full of passion. It's enjoyable to have the spotlight on you."

Quote:

Everton frontman Steven Naismith: "These are the games all players want to play in. These derbies are part of the reason why you sign for Everton Football Club."

Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer
Quote:

"Predictably raucous atmosphere inside Goodison Park. Last season's Merseyside derby here at Goodison Park was a wonderful classic that finished 3-3. Something similar would be very welcome.
"Liverpool have gathered real momentum in recent weeks and Everton arrested a poor and indifferent spell with a crucial win at Crystal Palace last weekend. Can Roberto Martinez's side build on that?"

"This is a game Liverpool need to win if they are to get into the top four, come the end of the season. Results haven't gone their way today, but the pitch looks perfect and the atmosphere is incredible. What more could you ask for on derby day?"

"Liverpool are just starting to find the form they are capable of. They have rediscovered that little bit of spark and speed and are breaking at pace again. Daniel Sturridge not starting is a huge surprise for me though. You want him scoring goals."

"Steven Gerrard thrives on derby day. He loves it, he's immense and he's so influential at Liverpool. I'm sure even if he had a torn hamstring he'd have gone out there and played today."

The sides can't play at this pace for 90 minutes, that's for sure. There would be casualties. Someone has to have a breather. Jordon Ibe almost gets in behind the Everton defence but the pass is slightly overhit. Everton break and Romelu Lukaku's duff touch brings it to an end. The giant Belgian is spending time out wide.
