Liverpool return to action against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Tuesday evening. After being held to a goalless draw in Saturday's Merseyside derby, the Reds will aim to return to winning ways against their top-four rivals. Earlier this season, Brendan Rodgers' men ran out 3-0 winners at White Hart Lane, while last campaign's corresponding fixture ended 4-0 in Liverpool's favour.

Premier League: Defense Key To Reds' Progress, Says Skrtel
Excerpt...
Quote:

Martin Skrtel has taken heart from Liverpool's solid defensive displays recently, and called for more of the same ahead of Tuesday's Barclays Premier League match with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers' side struggled defensively earlier in the campaign, keeping five clean sheets in their opening 20 matches. But a run of four consecutive matches without conceding a goal points to a greater stability at the back, while an eight-match unbeaten run has lifted them to seventh in the table.

Saturday's goalless draw at Everton provided further evidence of Liverpool's solidity and Skrtel is encouraged by the team's performances in recent weeks. "We have changed the system to a back three and it is working for us," Skrtel told liverpoolfc.com. "We are defending much better. It suits us. I hope we can carry on this way in the future. I'm happy for the team, because we have improved our defending. There was a lot of criticism. Since New Year, we have only conceded one goal from open play - that's great and I'm happy about that."

Skrtel sees Tuesday's match as key to Liverpool's hopes of returning to the top four. "It [the Spurs game] is massive," Skrtel said. "Tottenham are a few [four] points in front of us. It's going to be a big game, now we have a few days to get ready for it. I believe and hope we can beat them and get three points. But every single game is important for us. We'll go game by game, try to get as many points as we can and try to finish in the top four."

This Is Anfield: How Liverpool Could Line Up Against Spurs
Excerpt...
Quote:

With Coutinho and Sterling likely to be fit in time to feature according to Rodgers, the boss may choose to make just one forced and one chosen change to his team. It’s a straight toss-up between Allen and Can to play in the midfield, and with the German in fine form in the ever-reliable back three and Liverpool needing to ensure they remain strong defensively, Can should stay in the back line, allowing Allen to come into the starting line up in Lucas’ place.

In attack, successive 90 minutes and ineffective displays should see Steven Gerrard make way for Sturridge to start alongside the Brazilian magician and Sterling, and Liverpool should line up like so on Tuesday night:

As discussed however, Can’s outstanding ability and versatility does provide food for thought for Rodgers, and the Northern Irishman could be tempted by a powerful and energetic midfield for the game which should see the 21-year-old join Henderson in midfield allowing Johnson to come into the team, and should the match come too early for Sturridge, Markovic to enter into the front three.

That would see the Reds line up like so:

A tough game awaits Rodgers’ Reds on Tuesday night against top four chasing rivals, Spurs, but if the Reds are serious about competing for Champions League place, it’s a match they must win to ensure they don’t fall further adrift of fourth place.

Sterling's contract offer"
Quote:

Liverpool's first offer of £70,000 a week was more than double the 20-year-old forward's current salary, and they have now increased that offer significantly. While sums of £80,000, £90,000 or £100,000 a week represent a jaw-dropping amount of money to most people, Sterling is the club's top scorer this season and creator of the most chances. Captain Steven Gerrard earns around £150,000 per week, while Glen Johnson is on more than £110,000, and neither can claim to have been anywhere near as influential as Sterling this season."

....here's my question: when are y'all going to sign Sterling? hmm1 whistle1 whistle1

Sturridge or Kane? Kane or Sturridge?
Liverpool v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)
Quote:

So, Daniel Sturridge starts for Liverpool tonight. It's the clash of England's two best young strikers, but who would Brendan Rodgers prefer to have? His own man, or Harry Kane. Naturally, he went for Sturridge: "For me there's not anyone better than Daniel Sturridge. He's got everything in his game if he's playing consistently. His goalscoring record, his pace, his power, he's got everything and as an English striker there's no-one better than him."
Agree or disagree? You know what to do...

...this could be a helluva' matchup today w/Sturridge up top for Liverpool vs. Kane for Spurs; you've got two of England's best strikers facing off mano a' mano...can you say goalfest? laugh1

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "Daniel Sturridge has been back in training for a couple of weeks, but we are having to get his fitness in games. Tonight is a good night for him to start. Raheem Sterling picked up an injury in the bottom of his foot and it has been really painful. He had to come off in the derby game.

"Lazar Markovic will be playing in a way of working he knows well. He has done very well since he came into the team. Young Jordan Ibe is a very relaxed kid as you saw from his performance in the derby match. It will be his first home start this season and he will be looking forward to it. Sturridge clearly has everything as a top European striker and if we can get him on field he will show that. Kane is terrific talent and it shows if a home grown player is given the opportunity he can do it."
