Liverpool FC: Rodgers Seeking Europa League Success

--Brendan Rodgers will send his Liverpool team out to face Besiktas on Thursday night with the same trophy-seeking approach that has defined their cup exploits this season. The Reds were narrowly eliminated at the penultimate hurdle in the Capital One Cup, an extra-time goal at Stamford Bridge swinging the semi-final pendulum in Chelsea's favour. In the FA Cup, meanwhile, Rodgers' charges are sailing strong after setting up a last eight contest at home to Blackburn Rovers by overcoming Crystal Palace 2-1 at the weekend.

On the continental front, they begin a Europa League campaign tomorrow evening by welcoming Turkish contenders Besiktas to Anfield in the Round of 32. The manager spoke to gathered media at the stadium this afternoon and outlined why this game, the overall tie and the tournament will be taken very seriously by Liverpool.

"I said at the beginning of the season that one of the objectives for us was to win a trophy," the Northern Irishman told reporters. "Hopefully you'll have seen from the efforts that we've put into the cup competitions that we want to do everything we can to win a trophy. This competition is no different - it's a very prestigious competition and a competition that we want to do well in.

"It is a tough game against Besiktas, a team that are obviously very strong in their own country; they have got good experience of playing games in this country, you saw their recent games against Tottenham and Arsenal. So we know it will be a tough game, but it's very much about looking to take a lead into the second leg, looking to win the game here in the best way that we can.

"We're very confident at the moment in terms of our performance. Our focus is really only the next game. The players over a number of games have been absolutely fantastic. We just want to continue with this mentality and performance level."

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge makes his European debut for the Reds having missed the whole of their Champions League campaign through injury. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers makes one change from the side which beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup with Jordon Ibe in for the suspended Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling is back on the bench following a recent foot injury. Besiktas coach Slaven Bilic includes Demba Ba in his starting line-up after the striker shook off a slight knock. It will be the first time Ba has faced Liverpool since scoring for Chelsea last year in a win which damaged the Reds' title hopes.

--Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Allen, Henderson, Moreno, Ibe, Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge.
--Besiktas XI: Gonen, Kurtulus, Franco, Gulum, Motta, Hutchinson, Kavlak, Tore, Sosa, Sahan, Ba.

No bad memories for Rodgers
Liverpool v Besiktas (20:05 GMT)

Will Demba Ba come back to haunt Liverpool? He, of course, scored that goal after Steven Gerrard's slip to damage Liverpool's title hopes last season. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is not thinking about that moment too much, though, saying: "It won't stimulate any bad memories for me. At the time (last April) he scored a goal, which was a good goal, but he has scored many good goals in his career. We just see him as a threat that we will pay respect to but nothing more than that. He had a very good period here in England, he is a wonderful player, who has good touch and technique and he scores goals. He has gone to Besiktas and done well."

Jonathan Northcroft, Sunday Times football correspondent, on the Wednesday Night Club on 5 live Sport: "I saw Daniel Sturridge play at Crystal Palace and he was impressive in the sense that he looked rusty to start with and struggled a little bit, but he dug in and ended up playing really, really well - he got better as the game went on and made a real impact in the second half.
"He's certainly looked up to by some of the younger Liverpool players, and he's the leader of a pack of the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Ibe. Sturridge is someone who likes to feel loved and wanted. They missed him so much when he was injured and how he's returned to players and fans who have welcomed him back with open arms.
"For Liverpool to be successful he has to now be a leader. They are losing Steven Gerrard and so they need players like him to now step up."
