Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

In the Usborne book of footballing equations - foreword by John Motson - bad defending = exciting games.
So I for one am happy to see the Liverpool backline all over the shop so far. Graziano Pelle has won two headers so far and both times Saints have been clean in on goal. Could easily have had two penalties. This won't end 0-0. Definitely.

Before the game Ronald Koeman said new boy Filip Djuricic would add quality and he's been a menace so far. He ticks all the boxes really, fast, strong, direct, dangerous. His latest act sees him hacked down by Lazar Markovic, free-kick in a dangerous area.

Did I say this won't end 0-0 after Liverpool had already scored? What an idiot. I meant that this won't end 1-0. More goals to come for sure. Both teams look as secure as the Greek economy.

...at least we now know how Mignolet got his head straightened out....

Simon Mignolet comes to claim a dangerous inswinging corner, he's been a new man since his fiancee sorted his head out. Southampton controlling the ball nicely and bossing the game with 68% of the ball. It's all gone to plan bar one screamer from 30 yards from Philippe Coutinho...

"It's been a strange game so far. Southampton have played the majority of the football, but Liverpool have the lead. I think Liverpool are a bit like Manchester United in that the results they have had almost seem in spite of the system they play. I don't think Brendan Rodgers' tactics suits his players at all."

You're a brave man comparing those two sides Steve...
Twice in a few seconds Liverpool almost pick a way through the Saints defence, but on both occasions the final pass goes astray. Raheem Sterling, after an anonymous opening 15 minutes, is starting to get on the ball.

"Liverpool looked all over the place for the first 10 minutes but they're looking far more assured in possession now. Southampton have now started to become a little bit scrappy and scruffy. I'd like them to start getting the ball down a bit more. They should have had a penalty earlier though."

...on the second appeal, agreed...on the first appeal, not so much....

Emre Can gets away with a clumsy tackle on the sideline as Southampton look to build some pressure again. Can they force an equaliser?

...clumsy, yes....but it worked!

...from the BBC's Twitter feed....
-Chris Welander: Steve Claridge comparing Liverpool's style with Manchester United? Liverpool far more fluent with a manager who has adapted his tactics well.
-Immanuel C-Bankes: Comparing United's and Liverpool's systems is ridiculous. Liverpool playing great football and looking solid, bar this game. United the opposite.
-Joe Young: Playing Emre Can at left centre-back against Nathaniel Clyne and Eljero Elia isn't going to end well.

PENALTY APPEAL
Southampton 0-1 Liverpool
Posted at 32 mins

Is that a penalty now? Southampton had two good shouts in the opening stages and now Raheem Sterling has his legs swept away as he tries a neat turn inside the box.
On first glimpse it looks a nailed-on spot-kick, but the replays suggest that Jose Fonte got plenty of the ball first. Who'd be a referee? Not me. Nothing given.
