Quote:

"Any ball in to the box and Liverpool have looked worried by the likes and Graziano Pelle and Jose Fonte. But Southampton are lacking width. Out wide is where you are going to get your space against Liverpool, but the home side are not exploiting that."

...and there's the halftime whistle!
The locals are not happy and there was plenty of late-half controversy, but Liverpool have the lead thanks to a rocket from Phillipe Coutinho....your halftime score: Liverpool 1, Southampton 0.

Quote:

"Southampton will consider themselves a little bit unlucky. Certainly they should have had at least one penalty, and they've conceded from an absolute 'worldy'. Every ball they've put into the Liverpool box has caused all sorts of panic.
"It hasn't always been fluent but it has been an intriguing game. It's very open, and you feel there is an awful lot more to come from both sides, if only we could dredge up a little bit more quality."

Maybe referee Kevin Friend will change tack in the second half and give absolutely everything. Four penalties each after the break. Speaking of penalties which aren't given, did you miss Jose Mourinho on Sky this morning? His tete-a-tete with Ben Shepherd was up there with Frost/Nixon...

...from the BBC's Twitter feed....
-Paul Moore: Might as well give Liverpool the three points and all head home early. Jose Mourinho would have a long list of 'minutes' with this referee...
-Simonmwuk: Liverpool have been rubbish, defensively a mess and rescued by a shocking referee. Saints should've had three penalties and Liverpool Simon Mignolet sent off.
-Dominic O'Caollai: You can't blame the referee for the Mignolet decision. It's so close and he's miles back from it. Liverpool lucky though.

SUBSTITUTION
Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

--Morgan Schneiderlin is coming on for Southampton. Dejan Lovren gives him a playful jab in the ribs as he waits to come on.
Schneiderlin replaces Steve 'interesting' Davis.
--Liverpool have also made a switch as Alberto Moreno is on at left-wing-back.
Here we go.

Lively stuff from Eljero Elia down the right, he beats Martin Skrtel for fun and pings in a good cross but again Graziano Pelle is not on his toes. Where was the big man?

James Ward-Prowse with a corner for the Saints, whipped in but flicked away from danger by a Liverpool head. The hosts starting on the front foot but Liverpool are built to counter with Jordon Ibe and Raheem Sterling.
Saints switch it nicely and it ends up with Graziano Pelle dragging a shot wide.
