Stoke City F.C. vs. Liverpool F.C.
Premier League - 24 May 2015, 15:00 GMT (10am US EDT) at the Britannia Stadium

Quote:

Liverpool will conclude their 2014-15 campaign with a trip to Stoke City.

Having suffered a 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace last time out, the Reds will be determined to sign off with a positive result at the Britannia Stadium.

Earlier in the season, Brendan Rodgers' charges downed the Potters 1-0 at Anfield, while the corresponding fixture last year brought a 5-3 win.

BBC Sport: Stoke-Liverpool Preview

TEAM NEWS
--Stoke are expected to recall goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, the Bosnian has watched on in recent weeks with Jack Butland being given chance to impress. Stephen Ireland is nursing a back injury, Peter Crouch and Peter Odemwingie are also fitness concerns.
--Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is set for his 710th and final appearance. Brendan Rodgers says Raheem Sterling is available to play despite uncertainty over his future, but Mario Balotelli is unlikely to be fit.

MATCH PREVIEW
It's all Steven Gerrard's fault. I blame him for my youngest son bucking the Fisher family tradition in favour of becoming a Liverpool fan. Aged just three, maybe his dad shouldn't have allowed him to stay up late to watch TV- but this was a special occasion - the Champions League final of 2005. THAT header, THAT goal not only changed the direction of that game but it has had me buying replica Liverpool jerseys for Tommy ever since.

But it wasn't just impressionable toddlers who fell in love with Gerrard, it was supporters everywhere. An outstanding player, a great leader and a sound bloke; basically we all wanted somebody like him in our side. Of course he got stick from opposition fans but that's because they recognised his threat and feared him.

Last season, the vast majority of neutrals were gunning for Liverpool to win the title and that was because of Gerrard. Without their talisman it's hard to see that 25-year wait ending anytime soon.

This season has been a major disappointment. Shorn of Suarez and the perennially injured Sturridge, Liverpool have always been off the pace. Two cup near misses and an early European exit have been followed by the tawdry saga of Raheem Sterling's contract negotiations.

If Liverpool missed their targets and look in a mess, Stoke have hit theirs and look in splendid shape. Back-to-back ninth-place finishes is an impressive achievement.
Mark Hughes has built on the solid foundations laid by Tony Pulis. Still combative but now more expansive, the addition of the likes of Bojan, Arnautovic and Diouf have sprinkled a little gold dust among those red-and-white stripes. It's a sign of how far they've come that Stoke now expect to beat the likes of Liverpool.

Famed for their noisy rendition of "Delilah", I expect the Britannia faithful to wrap their tonsils around "You'll Never Walk Alone" because if last Saturday was all about Anfield waving a tearful goodbye to their Stevie G, this weekend sees English football say their farewell to a true legend and I'm truly honoured to be a small part of the occasion.

Here is the current rundown on the European positions going into Championship Sunday; at present, the Europa League places (5th-6th plus) are still up for grabs....a few possible scenarios:

...for Liverpool (5th, 62 pts, +9)
-If Liverpool win, they will finish 5th
-If Liverpool draw, they will finish 5th IF BOTH Tottenham & Southampton drop points
-If Liverpool lose, they could still finish 5th IF BOTH Tottenham & Southampton drop points

...for Tottenham (6th, 61 pts, +4)
-If Spurs win, they will finish ahead of Southampton and could leapfrog Liverpool for 5th IF Liverpool drop points
-If Spurs draw, they will finish 6th IF Southampton drop points
-If Spurs lose, they could still finish 6th IF Southampton lose

....for Southampton (7th, 60 pts, +23)
-If Southampton win, they will finish 6th IF Spurs drop points; IF BOTH Spurs & Liverpool drop points, Southampton could finish 5th on goal differential vs. Liverpool
-If Southampton draw, they could finish 6th IF Spurs lose
-If Southampton lose, they will finish 7th and would need Arsenal to win the FA Cup on May 30th in order to compete in the Europa League for 2015-2016
*

* - currently only 5th & 6th are guaranteed Europa League positions along with whoever receives the Fair Play Berth (at present, West Ham are in the lead for that spot); if Arsenal win the FA Cup Final next week, 7th place also gets a Europa League berth; if Aston Villa win, they would get the Europa League berth given to the FA Cup winner

The players are starting to gather in the tunnel. Steven Gerrard is about to lead Liverpool out for the very last time. Here's what one former Anfield favourite has to say about him.

Three-time Liverpool title winner Kevin Keegan on Sportsweek: "I met Steven Gerrard for the first time when I was England manager. There was nothing to dislike about him. His attitude was spot on and was very attentive. He showed leadership qualities in training at an early stage of his career. The way he talked, handled himself, gave people time. Once you have had it that age, you can only get better. The more I met him, the more I liked him."

It's nice for the attention to be back on team and not just myself. I've had a terrific farewell. It's going to be nice to play in front of our away fans and hopefully the Stoke fans will go easy on me as well."

If Gerrard thinks he is going to have an easy ride in his final game then he had better think again. Two minutes on the clock when Glenn Whelan clatters into Liverpool's No 8. Free-kick to Liverpool just inside the Stoke half.
