NBC Sports: Quique Flores - Watford Has Earned Premier League Respect

Posted Image
Quote:

This is Watford’s third season in the Premier League. The previous two, they finished dead-last.

However, Quique Sanchez Flores has this Watford team looking like a side capable of staying up in the Premier League, currently sitting 13th on the table through ten matches.

After beating Stoke City 2-0 at the Britannia last weekend, Flores said his team is playing very confidently, earning them Premier League respect.

The most positive thing is we’re playing like a confident team. We’ve won the respect of the league. For example, Arsenal didn’t rest any players against us even though they had an important [Champions League] match three days afterwards.

We feel we are working well and the other teams recognize that we are doing it the right way.

Despite scoring just eight goals, tied for the league-low, Watford has still managed to earn a record of 3-4-3 through ten matches. One of the reasons for that has been keeping a strong defensive shape in their own half, conceding just ten goals on the year.

A good sign for the Hornets is that Troy Deeney finally got on the scoresheet at Stoke, scoring his first goal of the season. After tallying 20+ goals in each of the past three campaigns, if Deeney can continue to grab some goals in the Premier League, Watford will continue to impress.

Flores’ side faces a tough test this weekend, hosting West Ham on Saturday. The Hammers sit third on the table and are unbeaten on the road, taking 13 of a possible 16 points away from Upton Park.

NBC Sports: Tottenham Defeat Aston Villa 3-1
Quote:

Sunday’s North London Derby is officially a meeting of the Premier League’s two most in-form sides following Tottenham Hotspur’s (14 points from last six league games; Arsenal – 15 points from six games) 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Monday.

Moussa Dembele gave Tottenham an early lead, three minutes on the clock, with a bullish run and fortunate finish. Danny Rose played the Belgian down the left touchline, where Ciaran Clark made his initial challenge. Dembele held off the challenge from Clark, bullying his way past the defender and into the penalty area with only Brad Guzan ahead of him. Dembele’s left-footed finish nutmegged Guzan and bulged the back of the net.

Dele Alli doubled Spurs’ lead shortly before halftime. Rose sent in a cross from the left wing, which was headed away by Joleon Lescott, but only as far as Alli at the top of the 18-yard box. His first touch was with his thigh to control and settle the ball, the second was a low, volleyed strike to the far post that left Guzan rooted to the ground.

Villa pulled their goal back through Jordan Ayew, whose long-range strike took a severe deflection off Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen, wrong-footing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and sneaking just inside the Frenchman’s right-hand post.

Harry Kane scored Spurs’ third goal, curling a right-footed blast into the top corner of Guzan’s far post. Christian Eriksen freed Erik Lamela down the right wing in the build-up, Lamela cut the ball all the way across the penalty area and Kane rifled the ensuing shot into the back of the net for a comfortable final score.

With their victory, Spurs (20 points) are up to fifth in the league table, five points back of Arsenal, their north London rivals and joint-leaders of the PL. One point separates Spurs from fourth-place Manchester United in their bid to once again claim an UEFA Champions League place. Spurs remain one of two teams (Leicester City) to have lost just once on the season (opening day defeat away to Manchester United). Meanwhile, Villa remain bottom of the league, two points off the pace of 19th-place Sunderland and four points from safety in 17th (Bournemouth).

BBC Sport: Stoke City Forward Signs New Contract

Posted Image
Quote:

Stoke City forward Jon Walters has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League club.

Walters rejected a previous contract offer from the Potters, who turned down a £1.5m offer from Norwich for the player in August. But Stoke announced on Saturday the Republic of Ireland international, 32, had now signed a new deal.

Former Ipswich player Walters has scored two goals in seven Premier League appearances this season.

Walters joined Stoke, who started the weekend 14th in the table, from Ipswich in August 2010.

NBC Sports: New England Revolution Targeting Newcastle Midfielder?

Posted Image
Quote:

And Revs fans thought Jermaine Jones had a temper. New England is reportedly looking into the addition of Cheick Tiote, the punishing but rarely used Newcastle United midfielder.

Tiote, 29, is a destroyer with a penchant for tearing off big shots from distance, most notably a booming goal that capped off a 4-goal comeback against Arsenal. He’s made 130 appearances for the Magpies since joining from Twente in 2011.

He has also been capped 53 times by the Ivory Coast. There’s a bit of Osvaldo Alonso to his game, a poor man’s Nigel de Jong, and Tiote would certainly make lives miserable for opposing midfielders.

Transfermarkt pegs the Ivorian’s value at around $8 million.

Could one of the Premier League’s fiercest tacklers and most fiery competitors be the perfect replacement for Jermaine Jones in New England?

...as much as I don't like Manchester City at times, I also don't like seeing one of the Premier League's top midfielders out for long periods of time either....

(NBC Sports) Samir “The Silver Fox” Nasri is set for a longer spell on the sidelines after a setback in recovery has him on crutches and facing three more months away from the playing field.

Nasri, 28, has been out with a hamstring problem since mid-October. He has a goal in 10 appearances for Manchester City, just three of them starts.

NBC Sports: French National Anthem To Be Played Before Premier League Matches This Weekend

Posted Image
Quote:

The French national anthem, La Marseillaise, will be played at Premier League grounds this weekend.

Before kick off at all 10 games in Week 13 the anthem will be played to honor those killed in the Paris terrorist attacks last Friday.

Below is a statement from the Premier League explaining how the pre-match ceremony will play out.

72 Frenchman current play for PL clubs.

The Premier League has announced that the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, will be played ahead of all this weekend’s matches as an act of remembrance and solidarity with France after the Paris attacks.

Richard Scudamore, Premier League Executive Chairman, said: “Given how close we are as well as the long-standing relationship that exists between the Premier League and France, playing La Marseillaise as an act of solidarity and remembrance is the right thing to do.

“We were all saddened and deeply shocked by the events in Paris last Friday, and the fact it was an attack on people enjoying their everyday freedoms like going to a bar, a concert or a football match resonates with football fans and the general public throughout the UK.”

A choral version of “La Marseillaise” will be played after the coin toss, with players from both teams coming together with the official and assistants in the centre circle facing the main stand.

There are 72 French players currently in the Premier League, making France the second-most represented nation after England.

NBC Sports: American Agent Who Inspired "Jerry Maguire" Looking To Invest In Tottenham Hotspur

Posted Image
Quote:

The American sports agent who was the inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in the 1996 film “Jerry Maguire” could be looking to purchase a stake of Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report from Telegraph Sport in the UK, Jeffrey Moorad has been in talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy over possible investment opportunities in the club.

Tottenham has been looking for investors for the club’s new stadium plans, which are expected to cost upwards of $600 million. The stadium is set to hold 61,000 supporters and has a partnership with the NFL to host two games per season, which would surely be enticing to American investors.

Moorad started his career as an agent before opening a private sports-investment firm. He formerly owned minority stakes in the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball.

It is believed he is interested in helping fund the new stadium, as well as possibly buying a stake in the club.

With the growth of the Premier League internationally and the growth of the sport in the United States, more and more Americans have shown interest in investing with clubs. Five clubs are already owned by Americans, while Crystal Palace is reportedly close to becoming the sixth.
