NBC Sports: Tottenham Win 4-1 Over West Ham
Quote:

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic said they lost their best player when Dimitri Payet suffered an ankle injury two weeks ago. His comments surprised many, but not because they’re untrue.

That sentiment appeared evident as West Ham was thoroughly trounced 4-1 by Spurs at White Hart Lane as Harry Kane bagged a brace and the visitors both struggled in possession and proved porous at the back.

The opening 15 minutes saw both teams look to feel out the other side, but Spurs eventually worked themselves on top of possession. The home side was patient, electing not to send in speculative crosses on a number of occasions, instead choosing to play the ball in possession and work for an opening on the ground.

West Ham were forced back by Spurs’ high press, and Adrian was called into action with a diving stop to keep out a deflected shot from Christian Eriksen on 22 minutes.

That was a foreshadow to the moment a minute later where Spurs would take the lead. Spurs found Dele Alli with space at the top of the shot, but a poor touch allowed the Hammers defense to arrive and block his shot. Unfortunately for the defense, the rebound fell right to Harry Kane with his back to goal, and he turned strongly around Carl Jenkinson and buried the 23rd minute chance.

--4 - Kane has now scored in 4 successive PL apps for the 2nd time in his career & bagged six goals in his last four PL matches. Promise. (OptaJoe, 22 Nov. 2015)

West Ham was immediately galvanized by the deficit, and moments later a deflected shot from Mark Noble looped up to Cheikhou Kouyate who produced an acrobatic overhead kick from close range that clattered the crossbar.

Spurs would push themselves back on the ball after the initial reaction from the visitors, and they’d push for another. It would come on 34 minutes as a corner swung in and Toby Alderweireld picked off Winston Reid on a teammate, rose above Andy Carroll, and powered home a header for a 2-0 lead.

The home side began to truly take over, as Alli nearly scored a third for Spurs as his header moments later smacked the bar. Kane pounced on a lucky bounce in the 39th minute and was clean through on goal, but scuffed his chance horribly, sending the ball wide.

The game got chippy after halftime. Kyle Walker was lucky to get away with no punishment for kicking Winston Reid, and on the other end Reid fouled Kane after losing the ball just outside the box. West Ham cleared the chance, but a terrible giveaway by Tomkins in his own half sent Kane through via Eriksen, and the England international buried a third for Spurs.

Walker added a cherry on top with a stunning effort in the 84th minute off the outside of his foot, and Spurs were well and truly on top. The Hammers would get a late consolation as a long-ball counter saw Nikita Jelavic work hard to find Manuel Lanzini who rocketed home from a tight angle.

That was all for West Ham, as the game boiled over and the anger flowed from both sides on a derby day. Dele Alli and Mark Noble both were given yellow cards to earn suspensions in their next match, while Walker and Diafra Sakho both were cautioned for a later scuffle. Spurs with the three points move just two back of rivals Arsenal in the battle for the Champions League, with the Gunners losing Saturday. West Ham remain on 21 points, still a solid position but with plenty of work to do after this eye-opening performance.

NBC Sports: Spurs Manager - Spurs Not Title Contenders Just Yet

Posted Image
Quote:

Tottenham Hotspur are not contenders for this season’s Premier League title despite moving to 12 games unbeaten with a 4-1 hammering of West Ham United on Sunday, says Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino — not yet, at least.

Following Spurs’ latest victory — their sixth in nine league games — Pochettino was inevitably asked whether or not he believed his side were title contenders — a completely fair question given the wide open nature of the PL this season. Pochettino was quick the quell such talk, though he did admit they are certainly headed in the right direction.

Pochettino, on Spurs’ title ambitions — quotes from the Independent:

“You can feel from the touchline how the players believe in the way that we play, that it is the best thing for us. We are very proud of the players, pleased with a lot of positive things we saw today.”

Pochettino would not discuss the title, saying it is “too early,” and that his side still need to improve. “For us to try to win the title, we need more, step by step. In football we cannot stop, ever. There is always something to improve in football, to try to play much better in the next game. We need to keep working hard and keep our feet on the ground.”

“Tonight we are very proud. Today you saw how the players believe in the way that we play. We share the same philosophy, the squad is convinced that the way that we play is the best. This is why we feel very proud of them.”

Spurs aren’t going to win the league this year (probably) — then again, we’d have said no way in the world Leicester City would be top of the league after 13 weeks, yet here we are, so who knows at this point? — but the dramatic improvement from his first to second seasons in charge is eerily similar to that of another Pochettino-coached side from year one to year two: his Southampton team, which followed up a 14th-place finish in his first (partial) season in charge with an 8th-place finish in 2013-14.

Much of the criticism surrounding Spurs last season was, “they’re a one man team, they would be nothing without Harry Kane,” which was perhaps true, last season. Fast forward to 2015-16, and Kane didn’t score his first league goal until Sept. 26, Spurs’ seventh game, yet they lost just once during his goalless drought. Since getting off the mark, Kane has scored seven goals in Spurs’ last six league games (four-game scoring streak).

At various points this season, cases could have been made for every one of Kane, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld as Spurs’ most influential player, and most recently, the entire midfield trio Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli. A well-rounded team, completely bought into the manager’s message, indeed.

NBC Sports: Sunderland Win 1-0 Over Palace On Late Goal

Posted Image
Quote:

While the month of November tends to be a bit early for Sunderland to bother with winning games, and their points in threes, Sam Allardyce‘s bunch went away to Crystal Palace on Monday and grabbed a gigantic three points with a 1-0 victory at Selhurst Park.

The first half saw Allardyce deploy his troops in, essentially, a five-man backline in an attempt to funnel every Palace attack into the center of the field and limit the space in front of and behind the second-worst (26 goals conceded – Bournemouth, 27) defense in the Premier League. The tactical surprise worked just as Allardyce drew it up, to the tune of six Palace shots, with just two on target.

Palace’s first quality chance of the game came in the 35th minute, when Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie fired the ball back and forth across the face of goal from outside of either post. Zaha had an opportunity during the sequence to head the ball on target, but ultimately sent it well wide and back to an offside Bolasie.

Sunderland began the second half a bit more on the front foot and created the game’s best chance through 50 minutes. Sebastian Coates rose above the crowd to head Sebastian Larsson‘s in-swinging corner kick toward the far post, but Yohan Cabaye was perfectly positioned to boot clear what would have been the game’s opening goal.

Jermain Defoe bagged the game’s only goal in the 80th minute, when he capitalized on an horrific error at the back by Scott Dann and Wayne Hennessey. Billy Jones played a through ball beyond Dann, but the Palace defender raced back and had every chance to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper or boot it clear. Instead, he shielded Defoe in hopes that Hennessey would take the initiative, which didn’t happen. Defoe raced around Dann, touched the ball around Hennessey and rolled it into a wide open net.

Monday’s victory pushes Sunderland (9 points) in 18th in the PL, ahead of Bournemouth on goal differential, just one point behind their Tyne-and-Wear rivals Newcastle safely outside the relegation zone. Palace’s (19 points) failure to leapfrog four sides and go sixth in the lead means they’ll spend the next week in 10th.

NBC Sports: Defoe - Sunderland's Duncan Watmore Reminds Me Of Gareth Bale

Posted Image
Quote:

Duncan Watmore is highly regarded at Sunderland, as the 21-year-old was rewarded with a new four-year contract with the club earlier this week. While the club has high hopes for the young winger, his teammates are taking notice as well.

Watmore’s teammate Jermain Defoe, a seasoned veteran who knows all about succeeding in the Premier League, praised the 21-year-old’s play, comparing him to one of his former teammates at Tottenham, Gareth Bale.

In a funny way he reminds me of Gareth [Bale]. When he came on the scene at Tottenham, he used to just get the ball and glide.

He’s such a nice boy, I don’t think he’s bothered about signing new contracts and stuff, all he wants to do is play football and do well for the club. If he can go on to do what Gareth has done then he’ll be fantastic. He’s the future of this club.

That’s quite the comparison, as Watmore has only made six Premier League appearances in his young career. Bale was twice named the Premier League Player of the Year before being sold to Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee in 2013.

While it’s a bit too soon to be calling Watmore the next Gareth Bale, there’s no denying he could be a huge talent for Sunderland. After coming on as a substitute in the Black Cats’ win over Crystal Palace on Monday, Watmore showed his speed and willingness to run at defenders, something the club is in desperate need of. He made his debut for the England U21 side this fall, which shows his form has impressed many outside of just the North East.

After starting his career in the Manchester United youth setup, Watmore was released and played with non-league side Altrincham before signing with Sunderland in 2013. He scored 11 goals in 18 appearances last year with the U21 side, being named the Under 21 Premier League Player of the Season.

Dangerous
Maccabi 0-4 Chelsea
Posted at 08:16

Posted Image
--Mourinho blamed a "dangerous" pitch for the ankle injury which is expected to prevent captain John Terry from playing in Sunday's match at Tottenham.

Terry, 34, was carried off on a stretcher in the 72nd minute of Chelsea's4-0 win at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"The surface was bad and dangerous," Mourinho said. "For John to leave the pitch with the score at 1-0, I know already that he is in trouble."

Mourinho lost midfielder Ramires to an injury sustained while training at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa on Monday and criticised the "very bad" pitch before Tuesday's match kicked off.

BBC Sport: Northumberland Club To Get $100,000 Transfer Share

Posted Image
Quote:

A little non-league football club in Northumberland is to receive a £100,000 share of the transfer fee for a former player. Stocksfield FC is to get part of England keeper Fraser Forster's £10m transfer from Celtic to Southampton.

Forster joined his local club when he was eight and played until he signed for Newcastle United aged 15. Stocksfield said the "overwhelming" sum could help it improve facilities and hire more coaches.

It took the club months to track down the paperwork needed to prove Forster, who has three England caps, played for the club as a youth. Much of it was eventually found in an attic belonging to one of the coaches.

Secretary and coach Phil Murray said: "It's unbelievable, we're so excited thinking how a small club in rural Northumberland has managed to get hold of this - we're absolutely delighted."

'Absolutely fantastic'
The club claimed the money under Fifa's compensation system which means any club fielding a player from the age of 12 gets a cut of later transfer fees.

"We expected a little bit of money... we might have got £1,000, which is the most we have ever managed to fundraise. But when we were going through the process we realised we were possibly due a little bit more, and it was only last week that the final six-figure sum come to fruit and we're absolutely overwhelmed as you can imagine," said Mr Murray.

"We've got some exciting plans. We would love to improve the facilities here," he said. "It's amazing how many of the kids want to be goalkeepers now - everyone looks up to him, everybody talks about him, whenever people say they are from Stocksfield they talk about Fraser - it's absolutely fantastic."

NBC Sports: West Ham Manager To Players - Stop Whining About Payet's Absence

Posted Image
Quote:

Sometimes nominating the signing of the season is difficult to do until we get a glimpse of a team without their new addition. We’re seeing that this year as West Ham, who were in fifth position before summer signing Dimitri Payet went down with an ankle injury that could see him out for three months.

Without Payet, they looked lost in a 4-1 defeat to Spurs at White Hart Lane, and the void left in midfield was all anyone could talk about.

Slaven Bilic hates that.

“Losing Payet is a blow but we have two options: one is continue to talk about it and the other is to get together and play better even without him,” Bilic said prior to Sunday’s home matchup with West Brom. “He’s a player who has made a huge impact. He’s a key player for us and is doing the things that every club needs.”

Before the Spurs match, Bilic was adamant that the team was losing its best player. Now, he’s of the opposite tone.

“In my team I have enough players who can make his absence to feel it less,” Bilic said. “We have enough quality to play without Dimitri. We were hugely disappointed and angry with the way we played [against Tottenham].”

NBC Sports: League Cup Preview - City, Liverpool & Everton Look To Make Semifinal

Posted Image
Quote:

The Capital One Cup quarterfinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with five Premier League left among the last eight.

Only one all-Premier League tie is set up with Southampton hosting Liverpool as Ronald Koeman pits his wits against Jurgen Klopp at St Mary’s in the tie of the round. Saints will be without captain Jose Fonte through injury, while Liverpool have Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge available but both may be used from the bench as they build up their match sharpness. Saints and Liverpool drew 1-1 at Anfield last month so expect another tight encounter down on the South Coast.

PL leaders Man City welcome Championship side Hull City to the Etihad Stadium with Manuel Pellegrini aiming to win the League Cup for the second time in three years. David Silva could make his first start in over two months for City, but Joe Hart remains out injured as Steve Bruce‘s Tigers come to town.

Everton also face second-tier opposition in Middlesbrough with a tricky trip to the Riverside awaiting the Toffees. Roberto Martinez’s team have to shore up at the back after drawing 3-3 at Bournemouth in the league last weekend, as they face Aitor Karanka’s flying-high Boro who are pushing for promotion from the Championship. This one seems like the biggest banana skin for PL clubs.

Talking of banana skins, Stoke City host Sheffield Wednesday at the Britannia and although the Potters will fancy their chances of making the final four after they knocked out Chelsea in the last round, Wednesday comprehensively beat Arsenal last time out and the Owls will provide a stern test for Geoff Cameron and Co.

Below are the fixtures for the next few days, while you can click on the link above to follow all the last-eight games live.

League Cup quarterfinals
Tuesday
Manchester City vs. Hull City – 2:45 p.m. ET
Middlesbrough vs. Everton – 2:45 p.m. ET
Stoke City vs. Sheffield Wednesday – 2:45 p.m. ET

Wednesday
Southampton vs. Liverpool – 2:45 p.m. ET

NBC Sports: Newcastle Stun Liverpool 2-0

Posted Image
Quote:

Georginio Wijnaldum starred as Newcastle outran the in-form Liverpool to earn a 2-0 win at St. James Park. The Reds will feel aggrieved, however, with a 79th minute equalizer from Alberto Moreno wiped away thanks to an errant offsides flag.

Wijnaldum forced a Martin Skrtel own goal with 21 minutes remaining, and then scored his own in added time to seal the three points.

With Liverpool well on top throughout the opening 20 minutes, the Reds still struggled to create much in front of goal despite their heavy pressing. After earning numerous corners, the Reds produced a 21st minute chance on their fourth of the day as Christian Benteke got on the end of a loose ball in front of goal, but he could only lash it over the bar.

Following the chance, Newcastle built themselves onto the ball and earned a chance as Papiss Cisse flashed wide just over the half-hour mark.

--6.9 - Liverpool have averaged 6.9km more & 84 sprints more per game under Jurgen Klopp than Brendan Rodgers in the PL this season. Duracell. (OptaJoe, 6 Dec. 2015)

Both sides had moments just before halftime. Cisse had a second opportunity five minutes before the break but he was beaten one-on-one by Martin Skrtel in a scrap in the box. The hosts’ first corner produced a chance as well a minute later, with Chancel Mbemba rising high but heading just over the bar. Liverpool earned themselves one more good effort ahead of the whistle too, as Jordan Ibe cut inside and curled one just over the bar.

Newcastle had most of the half-chances early in the second half, but were missing the final ball. Lucas had scuffed opportunity on 52 minutes, but the Magpies continued to push forward, growing the excitement at St. James Park. Tension grew as both sides pushed for the opener, and things truly opened up past the hour mark, but the build-ups remained sloppy and few true chances were created by either team.

Finally, as was fitting for this game, the breakthrough came from an own goal after 68 minutes as Georginio Wijnaldum cut a ball across the face of goal, and as it reached the near post it deflected off the shin of a sliding Skrtel and into the back of the net.

Liverpool pushed forward following the opener as Jurgen Klopp threw on Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana. They appeared to have the equalizer with 11 minutes to go, but Alberto Moreno was flagged for offsides despite skillfully volleying the ball into the back of the net. On replay, it appeared the referee’s decision was quite blatantly wrong.

Despite five minutes of added time, Newcastle would put the game away as Wijnaldum broke free after good work from Moussa Sissokho, dinking the finish over Simon Mignolet for a 2-0 lead.

The victory pushes Newcastle up level with Bournemouth on 13 points, only in the drop zone on goal differential. The win is only their third of the season and sixth this calendar year. Meanwhile, Liverpool has its four-match winning streak across all competitions stopped in its tracks, and remains in seventh on 23 points.

BBC Sport: Schweinsteiger Faces FA Charge Over Winston Reid Clash

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after clashing with West Ham United's Winston Reid.

Schweinsteiger, 31, caught the Hammers defender with his left arm as they contested a free-kick in the 40th minute of Saturday's 0-0 draw.

The Germany international will face a three-match ban if found guilty. He has until 12:00 GMT on Thursday to reply to the charge.

Referee Mark Clattenburg spoke to both players after the incident, but did not mention it in his post-match report. "The matter was referred to a panel of three former elite referees who each reviewed the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they considered it a sending-off offence," said an FA statement.

"For an FA charge to follow the decision by the panel must be unanimous."
